Politics: 2020 Dem POTUS candidate catch all discussion thread

Ha.....good one! To tell you the truth - I hate crowds and on top of that wouldn't be caught dead going to any political rally no matter who is speaking! Got better things to do - probably like most here.

I got through about half the video and will finish watching at some point by morning. So far so good. Huge brownie points for being a lieutenant in the Navy, which is the rank my father had when he retired. I didn't know that about the man.

Had a long day today but l look forward to posting my thoughts soon!
Finally was able to watch the entire video. Overall I like him more than any of the others running so far.....by a sizable margin. Mostly he seems very grounded and relatable......something important to me.

I took some notes during the video but don't have the time right now to get into those but maybe some other time.

Interesting the topic of immigration reform was not brought up - unless I missed it.

Thanks as always for keeping us included with your input, Charmin.

I only just started researching and listening to him but I THINK I really like this guy.

Same, and that has surprised the hell out of me. I think he's my #1 right now.

I feel that a lot of people get into this for reasons of vanity (looking at you, Harris and Booker), and I just don't get that vibe from him. I think he legitimately cares about addressing problems not for near-term political or personal gain, but for long term social health -- just look at his non-court-packing SCOTUS proposal and listen to the rationale behind it. Every Democratic candidate and their mother has an opinion on how to respond to McConnell stealing a Supreme Court seat. But he's the only one who hasn't approached the problem from the perspective of vengeance, for lack of a better term, and instead from the more thoughtful perspective of how we might defuse this constant political timebomb going forward and actually separate partisanship from high court nominations.

I agree with all the good things I'm seeing and hearing about him, saw him on Morning Joe today, but I'm not so sure that the country in general is ready for his candidacy yet.

Maybe not, I think his biggest issue may be his age but he is at least refreshing. And the fact that no one can say his last name (though I think it would be fun if he were to go by President Pete or POTUS Pete since he goes by Mayor Pete right now)

I hate to compare him to Obama because I think they're very different in a lot of ways but he seems to have a similar vibe in some ways.

I think he is still a long shot but I hope he at least makes some noise and has a role in the future.

Yea he might be my #1 as well for the same/similar reasons. I want to read his book and learn more about him but I really like what I've heard/read so far.

Thanks for watching, and I appreciate your feedback.

The reason I was curious is because he's generally gotten a positive reception from everyone around here, including open-minded Trump voters. Part of it might just be midwesterners liking other midwesterners -- and to be fair, he does have a very midwestern way of talking to people that isn't as lecturing as Obama or Warren, as vulgar as Trump, or as sanctimonious as Pence. But I feel like it's more than just that.

Spot on - especially the lecturing and preaching part. I have a hard enough time listening to politicians without all of that stuff!

Nice alternative to Joe Biden for now.

If people want to call him Mayor Pete because they can't pronounce his last name - it's not the end of the world. But I find it a lazy excuse to not push oneself's mentality to learn - it's not that hard to pronounce!

Try Alabma's QB - now that one's much more challenging!

I saw him on Morning Joe also and on another show about a month ago. I believe at 37 he has a lot of potential, but agree with Bamaro the country, in general, is not ready for his candidacy. He needs more national exposure and experience possibly in the House or Senate or as Governor of Indiana.

You may be right, Gray.

But I see him as a candidate that could EASILY spark what is known as a "movement" - similar to what happened with Sanders and Obama. When those two started running - they picked up steam pretty quickly and became like folk heroes to much of the country.

When a "movement" gets going - there's no telling how far it can go.

I think it could happen - and his age would be a favourable component for him - in that respect.

I doubt seriously that he could get elected to statewide office in Red Indiana. His best bet would probably be to move 100 miles or so down I-80 to Chicago and eventually run for something in Illinois.

Age is merely a state of mind.

You think the country is not ready for a “First Man” with a male President?
I’m not so sure. If Lindsay Graham can repeatedly get elected in SC, I think it’s possible.
Face it - I don’t think there’s a smarter, sharper, more conversationally quick and capable candidate in the Dem field. He just has to convert the Sanders and Beto supporters (donors), and I think he’s got as good a shot as any.
Biden needs to announce he’s not running and just step aside; I’m not sure they ever were, but his mind and his mouth are not connected anymore. He won’t survive a campaign.

SIAP, hadn't seen this before and just thought it was a good contrast to our current president. Mayor Pete wrote this letter to the Muslim Community of South Bend after the shooting in New Zealand
