2026 Recruiting

Basically, this'll force everybody to put walk-on depth on scholarship. With the amount of money schools are swimming in these days, I think it's great.
But I suspect it'll only apply to the preferred walk one. I had a buddy in college who tried out for the team during walk on tryouts and made it. That type of walk-on is likely gone, and it's a shame. There's just not gonna be room for them anymore. I wonder if we still even hold tryouts.

Revenues are up, but so are expenses.

Between coaching salaries (HCs and assistants in all sports, but especially football and basketball) and pay-for-play in all sports, and fired coaches’ buyouts, the truly profitable programs are few and far between.

Net net, top-line income isn’t profit, and very few schools end up in the black after payroll.

I love the idea of a salary cap for players, collectively bargained. Now do the coaches. I seem to remember Coach Bryant couldn't make more than the school President...

But why not add more quality talent? Maybe more 3 stars now. Taking a risk on a kid who may be talented, but smaller in stature. Taking a big DL who is overweight that you can trim down.

There are so many athletes that probably don't get D1 schollies who don't want to walk on OR can't afford to walk on that now will get a chance to play.

It'll just make teams deeper and more talented, but it'll be a good think for the kids that used to get passed by that will now get a chance.

Imo, you can still try out and if you make the team, you'll automatically get added on scholarship. I don't see how that's any different from process for walk on?

I just don't see how there's going to be any room for them at all on the roster. The rest of the 105 after the normal scholarship players will go to lower end scholarship players and preferred walk ons, leaving the rest without opportunities. That was my whole issue with the house settlement because it doesn't recognize the distinction between preferred walk ons, and regular walk ons. I was talking to Grok about this, and he said a lot of schools have already eliminated tryouts. Gone are the days of the feel-good stories where the walk on who didn't even play football in high school earns a spot on a P4 roster and becomes a key contributor.

This extra practice time for these EE's is very, very valuable when the other SEC teams that didn't make/advance in the playoffs are sitting at home watching TV.

Here is a list of the EE's that will get that valuable practice time.

The full list of Alabama's incoming freshmen participating in Rose Bowl practices

(h/t to 247's Brett Greenberg)

  • 5-star CB Jorden Edmonds (Marietta, GA)
  • 4-star WR Cederian Morgan (Alexander City, AL)
  • 4-star CB Zyan Gibson (Gadsden, AL)
  • 4-star QB Jett Thomalla (Omaha, NE)
  • 4-star TE Mack Sutter (Dunlap, IL)
  • 4-star OL Chris Booker (Atlanta, GA)
  • 4-star DL Kamhariyan Johnson (Muscle Shoals, AL)
  • 3-star DL Corey Howard (Valdosta, GA)
  • 3-star LB Zay Hall (Tuscaloosa, AL)

If you make the team, you'll be on scholly. If they recruit someone who's better than you, you won't. But if you make the team, you make the team. Either you beat out someone else who was recruited or whatever but you made the team. Like an undrafted free agent. Just like the pros.
