339 Net Yrds wow!

Kind of the bend but don't break philosophy. I think we probably did not implement new schemes as much as we could have due to a. we should be able to stop them with our regular defense b. it's just one game (time) c. don't confuse the players.

It looked to me like the LB's and safeties had the biggest roles in this game. We probably could have played Barron up closer or mixed up the linebackers responsibilities more to confuse them, and given less towards the pass, but you have to ask why? With our defense, we should be able to play them somewhat balanced to prevent the big play while containing the rush. What got us was their speed. Especially horizontally against our linebackers.

This was just one of those games. If this was a championship game or an offense that we would see more of, the coaches would have implemented more to confuse them instead of reacting. I understand their position with this one game, and it is just one game.

Roll Tide! March on.

If you talked to all the defensive coaches on this staff, THIS is the game that scared them the most. Not LSU, NOT Arky, NOT Auburn, NOT the SECCG---THIS game. If you don't play against this sort of offense every single week and deal with it all the time, you just don't have the personnel for it, and you'd better be fast, quick, and disciplined. Their offense is a GREAT equalizer for a "smaller" sized skill player set, and they run it to PERFECTION. They are going to win their NC again this year---there is no other team in their division that is playing as well as they are.

Also, if you asked EVERY coach in the SEC and the ACC (since they have to play G.Tech) which time of offense do you HATE to prepare for the most it would be this one. It's a one trick pony, for sure, and IF they have a bit of an off day and commit turnovers (which of course GSU didn't) then it kind of falls apart, but it's a pony they can ride all the way to their national championship.

I could tell there were a majority of our fans who did not understand how hard this offense was going to be on our team before this game, whether it was because they thought we were playing Georgia State again or whether they just didn't know anything about football, but everyone who knew this team and who knew anything about football KNEW this was going to be a bit more of a struggle than the standard "less informed" (not going to say "ignorant", but that's essentially what we're talking about) fan was thinking. Their cut blocking can be dangerous and we are VERY fortunate to not have any more injuries than we did, and we are also VERY fortunate to win the way we did with such a patchwork DL. Our fast linebackers saved this game for us. DH, CJ, JH, NJ---those guys deserve the game balls on defense for keeping outside contain for the most part. And our conditioning is to be commended once again, as of course our starters had to play the whole game until maybe the very last drive by GSU, but they never seemed to tire or slow down.

All in all, very glad to get that one over. VERY glad.

Great point. We are definitely set to play a horizontal game and this must have really been a challenge considering how well they run their offense. As you pointed out about the personnel, I could see a couple of smaller guys on the line and the d-backs having to cover more area.

Yeah, but you are acting like the defense got smoked. All things considered, they did very, very well. With out best DTs in the game, we might have shut them out entirely.

Doubtful. Those guys can get blocked too. Don't know what you guys are worrying about. ESPN has chosen not to even mention that Alabama's starters gave up 302 yardssushing. They're painting it like Alabama rolled to a bunch of points and what GSU got must have been in trash time. Only TD in trash time I saw was scored by the Tide's starters with less than a minute to go in a game that was already decided.

I was upset with the defense while watching the game, but all things considered, they did adjust and did not allow a TD in the 2nd half. The third TD came on a kickoff return so that's Special Teams. Ga Southern executed very well and had great down field blocking. Eight plus yards came on the one long TD run in which our true Freshman D lineman looked like he made an assignment mistake and didn't know who to take. Plus, our defensive rushing yards allowed benefits from the negative yardage plays accumulated by sacks. Most teams are playing catch up in the 2nd half and our guys can tee off. Ga Southern only passed about five or six times the entire game so the D really didn't have that opportunity. Ga Southern pretty much gained positive yardage on each rushing play. I do believe that was because they executed so well and because we were missing several of our D linemen and could not get any penetration at all to disrupt the option. You really need some penetration to force a quick decision.

I had never seen the triple option in a game before (the wishbone was before my time :)) so I was surprised at how effective it can be when you have players that can kinda perfect it.

Tom Osborne equated the option to downfield passing - both are explosive aspects of an offensive scheme if run well. The stuff about it having been overcome has never really been true.

Not to be disrespectful but anyone who thinks not having Chapman,Gentry & Williams for most of the game did not have an affect I have to question if you watched any Games this year.

Like has been stated this was no easy task, not just because of the triple option but because they run it so well & missing the folks we did, I'm proud of the team.

I was shocked at a passing TD with under a minute to go from the WHAT??? 2yd line?
As a life-long Alabama fan it's embarrassing to think style points are NEEDED at the expense of class.:redface::redface:
Such is the state of '11 football? The Hat taking a knee with 5:00 to go was in very bad taste too.

I believe that Saban was ready to call off the dogs, then the GSU coach called a time out. GSU wanted to get the ball back and try to score on us again in a game that was over - when we were just trying to run out the clock instead of running up the score. They showed Saban after the timeout and he was not happy.

one thing about that flex bone, triple option, whatever......

If you sell out against the run, you have to include your corners...they are key in keeping that run from turning the corner and getting outside for big yards.

If you sell out, the pass will be wide open, and a good QB like gsu's will make you pay.

I was more worried about getting some of our linemen hurt with all the cut blocks and whatnot that come with the option offense.

CNS mentioned at the half we were'nt playing the dive play well. In the second half the ILBs covered the dive and the safety covered the trail in a more traditional mirroring fashion and we did better

Yep, same thing happened last week when Mullen called the series of time outs at the end of the MSU game. We could've and would've just kneed it but, they wanted to play wide open---so we did both games...

I could not believe we called a timeout either, then in the post game talk our coach was asked about it and he said we only had 10 men on the field.

By the way we are not only still leading the nation in total defense we're still number one in every major defensive category.

As far as the game Saturday Georgia Southern was possibly the best rushing offense we've faced and they ran that option with great skill and precision. I'd look for them to win the national championship in their division.

My hat's off to GS. I thought they were a very good football team.

sip

Could have still taken a knee.

This might be true, but no one thought that at the time. Maybe he should have told Coach Saban.
