Bama Game Thread: A-Day Game Thread ( ESPN @ 3PM CT)

My greatest concern after watching that game - the drops. Have to get that fixed or Mahomes couldn't help you.

The problem is that we really don’t have a good gauge of what the WR rotation is. Arguably our best WR isn’t even here yet, then you factor in the Hale injury, and the constant changing of Odom’s role and it’s kind of an experimentation of groups. I think our true second string wide receivers are alot to be desired and everyone who is in the 1st team rotation is trying to solidify their spot because they that come fall they are going to have to hold off another stud. So it maybe jitters.

I didn't watch the game (set to record so I can watch it today) but were the drops on balls that were well-thrown or were they off target? I've heard comments about the QBs throwing to an area on the field, so a "bad" throw may not be the QBs fault. It could be the receiver isn't running the correct route. If that's the case, it will take time and lots of reps for things to start really clicking in the passing game.

Good throws

I agree, but still believe that Jalen is your starter.

When Wisconsin blitzes the crap out of him then we will know for how long, because you know it’s coming. Everyone who is complaining about our defense yesterday may have noticed the absence of a lot of blitzes. At the REC scrimmage there was a lot of them and they were bullying our offense. I think the point of the day was to make our starting two teams to feel good about themselves.

IDK if Milroe will or will not be the starter for Georgia but I think it’s a good bet that he probably is the guy for our trip to Camp Randall. But idk because Deboer’s offense is based around quick short and intermediate passes that backs defenses off the line. I just still don’t see it in Jalen. Maybe it’s there maybe it’s not it’s really hard to tell in scripted scrimmages.

Texas and Michigan provided the blueprint to other teams. All you have to do is blitz Milroe straight on, and he will just stand there and get sacked. It’s crazy because he has crazy athleticism, but it doesn‘t seem to translate to any real escapability. It seems like Ty is much better in that regard.

Wow this is a deep RB room, I think all the are starter quality and better then last few years. Need top 3 to stay.

Starting oline looked good and has some bully ball as well.

DBs played and looked young. Dline underwhelming at the moment. D is probably biggest upside depending on growing pains.

Milroe started with one of his best passes in leading the WR. That is about it. Second was a 50/50 at best against a young/new secondary. His reads/ decisions better but still slow. Simpson not much better but gets the nod. Not sure Milroe is even the better runner of the two. No QB stood out but I have to say Milroe did not look better.

Not sure we have had a starting QB look good in a spring game though. Everything other than effort and play making means nothing in this game though. Can’t take much from it.

I’ll level and say that in 2023 I’m not sure either was the difference between a national championship and not one. I think Ty was better but had his own flaws that prevented him from separating himself from Milroe. Personally I thought in 23 Lonergan was the safest choice out of all 4. However I think picking the wrong 2 running backs to start hampered us more than who was quarterback. So I don’t really think having Milroe starting prevented us from winning a national championship.

Flashforward to this year. I think based on what I’ve seen the past 2 Saturdays that Ty is clearly the best quarterback in the rotation. I think in no uncertain terms Milroe was told that there would be a true competition between them in the fall because of Simpson’s growth in the Spring and a lot of the body language he is demonstrating is because of it. Because last Saturday Coach Womack made Milroe look bad and he had no answers for Simpson. Idk if Simpson Will outright be able to win the job before Georgia or not, but I think we have a true Plan 1B this year.

Germie Bernard is going to be a real work horse at WR.
Kendrick Law will be consistently dependable.
Kobe Prentice is maybe our best route runner, and will be reliable.
Caleb Odem will be a special target in the rotation.
Cole Adams. I've been talking about this young man for weeks. He's going to be really special. He'll be in the rotation.
Emmanuel Henderson will see action. He dropped a nice pass from Milroe in A-Day that killed the drive.
Jaren Hamilton could see action. He dropped a pass from Milroe in A-Day.
Ryan Williams. He'll have some catching up to do. But will likely soon be in the rotation.
Sam Willoughby may see action.
Aeryn Hampton, along with Prentice, is a great route runner. He's a freshman and might be redshirted. We'll see.
And freshmen Rico Scott and Amari Jefferson both have talent.

I would say RW is in the top based on things said last week.

Law, Prentice, and Benard are the clear guys that are going to be in the lineup

Odom keeps flipping back and forth between TE and WR so who really knows.

After that there is a huge drop off in terms of capabilities.

Why is Odom flipping back and forth? Is he not catching on to the receiver parts? Do they want him blocking and releasing off the line to create mismatches?

I wasn’t able to watch A-Day in full until this morning.

QB situation is probably going to have to be handled delicately.

The Drops were a problem and makes things a little more difficult to judge.

Jalen made a couple of really good throws to start but then the rest of his day was not so great.

The body language is concerning.

Ty looks to be a lot more confident and comfortable and making decisions faster.

He also made some good throws including a few where he had to avoid pressure. But drops affected his day as well.

Lonergan while not flashy was pretty consistent. He is probably a good safety net that would give you GMac Game Manager type of play.

Mack is a pretty much a long term project it seems and he seemed pretty jittery early.

The thing is that I couldn’t tell Jalen was any different than in 2023. I wanted to see him operate in the short to medium game making quick decisions. I didn’t really see that.

He is feast or famine and against most teams we can just out talent them and hit Deep Balls but against really good to great teams who can cover and apply pressure I’m afraid he’ll still blink and break down.

Ty does not have the Deep Ball right now but he seems to operate from the pocket better and is better at avoiding the rush and getting the ball out.

For me he’s just a technically more fluid and better QB who throws a consistently good catchable pass.

But the problem is that Ty isn’t ‘leap off the page’ better than Jalen in a real flashy way.

I just have no idea how this is going to go.

I feel like Ty would be the better choice and especially in the long run but I can see this still being a competition that Carries into the season.

On the plus side we have at least 3 absolute STUD RB’s. Those boys can tote the rock.

Bernard was really impressive at WR and looks like the #1 Guy based just on this scrimmage.

The only negative I have is this new format for A-Day was straight garbage.

I mean even when the D gets a ‘stop’… oh look the Offense is still right there let’s keep playing 👀

It was so convoluted and just not a fun way to watch.

Oh well..lol

I am excited about the new Offense though because I did think it showed we can still run the ball while also setting up plays in the passing game and Vice verse.

Oh and I almost forgot to say it was good to see plays that took advantage of Law's talents.

Man it’s going to be a long time until Aug.

I don’t know that we would have won a title last year with Ty as the starter, but I think we would have been much better off in 2024 if Ty had a year of starting experience under his belt.

I definitely think Jam and Justice should have been the starting RBs last year. They are just next level good.

Frankly, I did not see any starters out there today. This competition is going to last well into the Fall and probably a game or two.
it may last until the Fall, but not into season. I think lessons were learned last year with this group. Im sure CKD will look back at how unhealthy for team unity it was to drag the competition into the season. I fully expect JM to be the starter. And thats OK, if he wins.

IDK about Adams. He seems like a Mulaney guy that you really need a quarterback willing to see him to be used. Deboer is a receivers guy and guys who are great receivers are going to be coming in oodles.

Has anyone heard how Hale is recovering? He’s a talented kid. RTR
