A Day Game Thread! Roll Tide

I really feel for Jalen in all the goings on lately. He never has received the support of the entire Bama nation. I think what everyone needs to understand is Jalen was a master at running the ball and the offense around him was built to heighten his talents. After a while other teams figured out his lack of passing ability (ie. decision making on passes beyond 20 yards). Now it appears the pendulum is swinging back to a more pass oriented offense because Tua has the tools to do that. Unfortunately it comes down to a business decision and Jalen is lost in the shuffle. Regardless of what happens in the future I was always appreciate what Jalen did to get us as far as we got in his time here.

I have to disagree here. Jalen had the overwhelming support of most of Bama nation. He was being called the next "D.Watson". Did he literally have the support of every single Bama fan? No. But to blame his struggles on the lack of support from Bama nation is reaching, A LOT. What happen to Jalen is what happens to a lot of very talented athletes the higher they get into their sport. Opposing teams figure out what "you" do best, adjust then force "you" to adjust. Jalen hasn't been able to adjust. It's that simple. Until he proves he can adjust, he's a one trick pony that has had his one trick figured out.

I couldn't adjust to the slider and the curve on the college level. It's why I'm an accountant and not getting a retirement check from MLB. This is the outcome of most athletes. They finally hit their ceiling and have to get "real jobs". LOL!

I'm not bitter at all. :biggrin2:

I didn’t mean to imply that Jalen’s lack of support was the reason for his failures. As I said...his talents were useful for what he could do but now someone is here who can distribute the ball in various ways.

I was on the Hurts bandwagon after the 2016 A-Day game and was riding for him as the starter for the 2016 opener against Southern Cal. He just hasn't developed like I thought he would given how hard of a worker he is in the weight room. At this juncture I've just got to accept that he's an athlete playing quarterback not an athletic quarterback. You don't make it to the league at quarterback by being an athlete. He can go somewhere else to finish his career at quarterback then worry about the pros but he'd be better served playing at the position where NFL teams will draft him.

I've been straddling the line on Hurts because I don't think his play was always terrible against quality opponents but I'm not seeing the development to tell me he won't have struggles again against elite opponents.

No truer words were ever written. At this level of the pyramid it is survival of the fittest. Due to time constraints and pressure to win there is not always time to adapt and be given second chances.

watching the spring game, was difficult. I was surprised how well the def line and linebackers played. the secondary looks like a new one should look, and not bad. offensive line was under pressure the whole game. it looked like the same Jalen hurts to me. his passing was erratic, and as usual can not pass well when rolling out to the right. impress with matt jones. he was aggressive, quick acting to the rush. has a good arm, and moves well.

Funny you should say that.....................

I told one of my MLB buddies that he was lucky that he never had to find out how useless that Civil Engineering degree he had truly was. (Yeah, I'm still bitter we went to the wrong university!)

His son couldn't adjust to pretty much anything, at Rookie League ball, and had to find out he wasn't cut out to be an electrical engineer, either. (But, as usual, I digress.)

(Edit: now that I think about it, his daughter is on her 3rd or 4th different "career path". She wasn't cut out to be an EE either. Or a pastry chef. I forget what came next. Anyway, those that follow will be on her dime.)

Anyway, back to the subject at hand................

Life is a continual series of adjustments, adversities, and "learning experiences". If you can not make the necessary adjustments, on your current path, you probably need to move in a different direction. Those of us who have been around a while know that the journey frequently goes in a totally unforeseen direction.

Having watched the A day game do you guys think some of the 2nd team offensive line will be moving in to the starters roll? They were outstanding especially on the right side. Clean pockets and gaping holes to run through.

Does make a difference that they weren't having to face the first team defense. Wouldn't buy too much into it.

I thought Herb had a pretty decent comment - Jalen could graduate in December, so he could stay with the team this season and then do a grad transfer with no bench time. This might be the best outcome for everyone - he stays with the team, potentially starts or gets quality snaps as a co-starter/backup, and re-evaluates at the end of the season. I don't think there is anything to be gained by leaving before graduation.

Agreed.

I also wondered about the comments. Did Saban just get frustrated and say something he's been thinking for a while, not taking into account the wired microphones? Or did he plan that intentionally?

He's an emotional guy, especially when a player doesn't execute what he's coached to do. So I could see the moment getting the best of him. But he plays the press like Perlman plays a Stradivarius, so I could also see it being intentional.

Guess there's only one person who knows, and he's not talking.

Pearlman can do that with any violin. The last time I saw him on TV, he swapped violins with the concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony. He was playing the Mendelssohn Concerto, and the concertmaster owns a violin once owned by the soloist that premiered it, so Perlman was playing the violin that was used in the very first performance of the work. Not related to football in any way, but I liked the trade.

I supported Jalen his first season. I was one of the people who thought he might be the next Deshaun Watson. I even started a thread at the time stating it. He just never developed like I thought he would. When Tua came to Bama though I felt from the beginning that Tua would replace Jalen. Just watching Tua's high school highlight video I could tell he was a much better passer than Jalen and when he finally took snaps for Bama it was obvious. That crazy pass against Vandy and the bullet pass to Ruggs between defenders in the UT game were just two examples of plays that Jalen just couldn't make.

Wasn't Womack manning the 2nd string RT spot? Probably can explain why the right side looked very solid against the 2nd string DL. He has a season's worth of starts under his belt.

Womack was out all spring with his injury.
