AJ or Sims ?

Yep. One would think that touch rules and a lack of blitzing on first and second downs should reduce the QB's tendency to panic. Is it concerning that it didn't?

But that knife cuts both ways--one of the reasons we saw such poise from Sims may have been due to the knowledge that he wasn't going to get hit.

In the end, as always, Saban knows best.

I don't think fear of injury feeds into it as much as fear of failure. AJ was as panicked over that touch coming as with a sack. In fact, I think it could be argued that they will be calmer, because there was no way some of those off-balanced tags could have really made a sack. JMO, but I still expect P. Sims to be a bit calmer in the pocket, and then, there's B. Sims, also Mr. Ice. He made one accurate throw on the dead run that was as pretty as any pass I've seen lately...

not to call you out or anything but you're wrong... it's the 2nd spring for both :)

AJ came in AUG 2009... Sims JAN 2010... so 1st spring for both was 2010



I'll take Sims... i'll be honest i agree with what most other posters have said about Sims' upside... i know everybody wants the AL native to do well, and so do I... but based on what I saw Sims gives us the best chance to win consistently and control the ball the way the offense likes to do... seems to have better pocket presence and is more consistent throwing the ball... has a knack for avoiding pressure and making positives out of broken plays... also seems to have a better sense of timing and placing the ball where the receiver can make a the catch in stride... seemed to have a very good grasp on what the offense is trying to do... knew where his check downs were and what he wanted to do on each play... AJ seemed to rush some plays, get hurried under pressure and force throws, even short armed a couple... dont get me wrong AJ is good, and threw some really good balls, expected to see more zip on the ball, ball seems hang in the air for a while, looked much better on deep passes than short ones... those who say Sims doesn't have any touch must not have seen the beautiful pass down the sideline that DH would have scored on if Mosley wasnt such a freak and broke the pass up... Sims can make ANY throw, has excellent mechanics, lightning quick release, and has beautiful touch on the ball... could be one of the best we've ever seen, definitely has some of the best tools i've ever seen...

Everything is fan speculation with these spring games, I suppose. Hopefully yours is correct, since it paints a better picture of AJ.

But if we start switching P. Sims and B. Sims under center, Verne will be intolerable all season. ;)
 
Some of you guys are way too pessimistic. Personally I make little to nothing of the interceptions thrown. We were running a vanilla offense in which 80% of the plays were pass, against a pretty good defense. And I'm sure that both quarterbacks felt more comfortable taking risks than they would in an actual game. It seemed like they were passing every play...now often are we gonna see that in a real game situation...sometimes it will probably look like we're running every play. I wouldn't say things like "right now, neither is ready to lead the team,' or "We're gonna miss GMac." We will be a run-heavy, low-risk offense type team. Our offense will look nothing like what we saw Saturday; Greg had similar stats from scrimmages and A-Day but we didn't freak out about him. Saban isn't gonna ask too much of either quarterback at the beginning of the season. And I think by the end of the season we won't be missing GMac, we'll be saying Greg who?

I'm much more worried about the OL situation than I am about the QB situation. Fluker is still getting beat by speed rushers and I remember a couple of running plays when he passed blocked; he's not the dominant run blocker many of us expect him to be either. I'm hoping Douglas can take the LT spot, I thought he looked pretty good in pass protection.
 
I thought performance-wise they were about even, with maybe a slight nod to AJ. But upside is definitely Sims, personally I thought he looked like a potential future NFL QB out there, how long has it been since we've had one of those. He feels the pressure and steps up in the pocket, he looks receivers off, anticipates cuts and receivers getting open, has a quick head, seems very decisive, has a quick release, doesn't panic, he's calm after he or his receivers make a bad play (unlike AJ, who gets noticeably frustrated), he claps after bad plays like CNS, and he takes criticism well (I've never seen him angrily walking away from CNS when CNS is trying to tell him something). Sims made some bad plays in the first half but he never got frustrated, in fact I remember him clapping as he came off the field. He's much more mature and much more of a leader than AJ IMO. And I think the team will ultimately respect him more.
 
I say this goes into season, with AJ playing the first half of the Kent State game and Sims the 2nd! AJ seems to get "happy feet" a lot in the pocket.
 
I think we can throw the picks out of the equation. We were playing a scaled down vanilla offense against a defense that probably had a pretty good idea of what was coming on just about every play, or at least got a very quick read as the play unfolded. Plus, let's not forget that AJ and PS were going against probably the best D they'll see all season, especially in the secondary.

Maybe that'll finally retire Verne...
 
I like Phillip Sims. He did a noticeably better job of finding an open man, whether it be a WR or RB, when the pocket collapsed. I also like his release.
 
In the end, I think it's an uphill battle for Sims to overtake AJ, but he made up ground BIG TIME yesterday and, even if you throw out the picks, I say PS still grades out better also on film than AJ in the spring game.

Having a one yr jump on him in the system, I would have thought that AJ would have had the starting position locked down by now, but he hasn't--I think that's a tribute to PS more than anything, he is THAT good.

As I 've said in a few other threads in here, I've got to go with Sims from what I saw yesterday. He is very poised in the pocket and can run like a back. AJ lopes to the sidelines. AJ doesn't seem to have the touch on his balls, sometimes to much air under them. He still seems to me to try to make a play even if its not there. I want to yell down at him to please just throw it away. I like the fact of a QB that can run some and not just for his life. My vote today is for Sims, but something tells me it'll be AJ.
 
I believe it will be an intense summer for all the QB's and WR's. The summer workouts and fall practices will help. I reserve my vote for after the first week of fall practice. How about McSim-ms?
 
JMO, but I really think that it was probably to AJ's disadvantage to run the #1 offense against the #1 defense the whole first half. As it as been pointed out, we didn't even come close to running the type of offense we'll see this fall. Our defense is sick and knowing we weren't going to run it much and pass on most downs, they could pin their ears back and come after him even with their simplified defensive gameplan.

I will admit I was impressed with P. Sims too, but he threw a couple of dangerous out routes in the first half and if that would have been against our #1 defense they might have been actual pick sixes.

Overall, I think the style of vanilla offense maybe hurt AJ more the P. Sims. I think AJ's best impact will be on play action when we are actually running alot of running plays to one of our four or five legit running backs!

Also, I haven't heard anyone mention that CNS paid a pretty big compliment to AJ at halftime when he admitted that AJ was "taking what the defense was giving him." He was referring to the fact that AJ wanted to go to some of the deep routes but the defense was taking them away and he had to dump it off to some short routes. Again, in a normal game situation, with a greater variety of plays that could be run, a defense wouldn't be covering those deep routes nearly as effectively as they could yesterday.

I agree with "it's too close to call" but I do think AJ might be a little better in a real game situation at this point.
 
AJ is a better touch passer at this point. A couple of over the shoulder throws were very very good! Sims did appear to have better pocket poise but that's what a young'en will do when they have nothing the lose.

I think AJ wins the starting nod unless he completely breaks down over the summer.
 
I'm honestly not overly concerned about which one wins the starting job, I think we can win with either one, they're that talented IMO. I think we'll have to get used to seeing more mistakes than we've been accustomed to seeing over the past couple of years, but on the flip side I think we'll see a few more "wow" plays than we've seen too. The one that embraces the idea that they don't have to do too much the quickest will probably end up being the starter IMO.

i agree with ya..Sims upside is through the roof..As the game went on & the more snaps he took..He settled into his comfort zone..And was the better QB of the two..I would give Sims the nod as well..He just brings more to the table than AJ..
