Interesting observation.
I was thinking Collin could use a little more help at times. Is that on the coaching?
This is probably a conversation better suited for a post game thread, but I’ll say it anyways. Part of the problem is more on skill development. Avery has recruited a lot of talent and athleticism, but a lot of the guys come in extremely fundamentally raw. I do think we’ve done a poor job reinforcing fundamental skills, especially in the youngest members of the team.
Screening is definitely a big one, but my bigger concern Is how weak we can be at ball handling. Think about how often we turn the ball over when any of our guys drive. If Jones, or Reese, or even Petty try to take it to the hoop, you can almost predict a turnover coming. Honestly, at times even Sexton and Ingram aren’t much better.
We all know the shooting problems, which also comes back to fundamentals, so that’s not worth going into.
I will give credit where credit is due though. We have gotten significantly better at defensive positioning and pressure defense through the season. Our bigs are also playing like night and day from where they’ve been. So I don’t know that it’s necessarily on Johnson. Sometimes I wonder if we need better position coach focusing on guard fundamentals.
I don’t say any of that to be negative, Just a couple of observations. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. Roll Tide!!
