You should admit that LSU football was really in trouble when Nick arrived.
Sure, Dinardo let the wheels come off, mostly by being too loyal to coordinators who were not getting the job done. Nick turned it around with discipline, some damn good assistants, and eventually won the national championship in his 4th year with his own excellent recruits. But what I said . . . was that Nick won the SEC in his 2nd year with Dinardo's recruits, which is true. Nick had to rebuild attitude, determination, and fan support, but he did not really have to rebuild the roster. A lot of Gerry's boys played in the NFL. This does not mean that Nick didn't enhance what he found, just that it wasn't an empty cupboard.

I've always thought that a rebuilding coach, or even a coach following a successful predecessor, has three steps to make. The first is to take the preceding coach's players and prove that he can do more (or, at least, as much, with promise to do better) with them than the guy he replaced. Next, he has to prove he can recruit. Third, he has to exceed (if the guy were unsuccessful or, at least, equal, if the former coach were successful) his predecessor's accomplishments with his own recruits. I'd say that CLM is really between steps two and three at this point. Three obviously requires several years to finally shake out, so we'll wait, despite the impatience on both sides... :D
An excellent post, I've said repeatedly that the jury is still out on Miles. Everyone saying he's a Coker are jumping the gun just as quick as the ones saying they know he'll continue to roll. We'll have to wait and see.

But I have NEVER seen another coach downgraded because he won with someone else's recruits as much as Miles has.

It takes alot to put a winning team on the field, recruits are only a small part of it. Those guys are not just running on Saban gas.

CLM is coaching in the shadow of a MNC-winning HC. Worse, he'll have to face that coach once a year. That's the problem right there. It's a very weird situation. I don't remember anything like it...

Well, he's not going to be Coker - he can't fall as far. Coker was 24-1 in his first two years, winning one MNC and losing in the BCS championship game in double overtime in the other.

Really, truly stunning first two years.

I agree, but part of it is due to some of the rather bizarre things we've seen from Les, even during the games. He comes across as almost clueless at times and really makes it hard for anyone to give him the credit he may well deserve.

For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PkJAhckABM

Sure - he's had a great staff to help as well. This year will be a bit of a test for him - though he gets to keep Pelini (who is awesome), he lost some good coaches.

Time will tell.

However, that situation would be a testament to CNS being a better coach, considering we went 6-7 last year. As opposed to LSU's situation, where they won the NC. Seems like apples and oranges to me, but I'm sure our rivals will use that against us when CNS starts winning.
OK then...CLM must be a better coach than CNS...right?? Let's face it...CLM has done more winning with CNS players than CNS did.

In other words...this is a ridiculous thread. Both are good coaches...and great recruiters. Anyone that says anything other than that is not being truthful...they're just making a personal attack.

yup, and with all the talk of LSU winning with CNS players, if LSU beats Bama this year, does it mean that Nick beat himself? And does he get credit on his won loss record for the win?

Concerning recruiting...Les Miles classes have all been better than CNS' classes at LSU...and I don't include this years...cause you'd be hard pressed to convince anyone objective that the recruiting season ENDS in August.
it might not end but it sure does change at this time of year....coaches are busy getting ready for the season that they dont really have that much time to do actual home visits, its more of a prospects come a tour the campus and see a football game. Then after bowl season it swing back into the home strecth of home visits and travel break neck speed until feb. 5

It is very unusual. Conversely Nick must face the school where he won the championship once a year and they are still contending while he faces a rebuild. It must be a strange combination of pride and nostalgia for LSU with excitement and a new challenge at Bama. Maybe he'll write a book someday. I'll bet the Miami chapter will be gloomy as hell.

FWIW, I pay close attention to recruiting, and Bama/Saban are doing an outstanding job already. My point was this...the players being recruited right now haven't even played their Sr. year of high school ball. The recruiting services don't know NEARLY as much about them as the coaching staff of the various colleges. Once the high school season winds down, the recruiting services will have a much better handle on the talent being recruited by certain schools.
Also, once the COLLEGE football season is over, RECRUITS will have a much better handle on where they want to spend their college careers. The top echelon players don't commit in July/August...they don't commit at all. They SIGN...on Feb.5th, 2008. Some of them already may have their minds made up, but most will want to check out the little things like---How is Saban going to do at Bama?...or How is Miles going to do without Russell, Bowe, Davis...and Jimbo Fisher? Once those questions are answered, then the recruits will make their decisions.
Also, and we ALL should realize this by now...COMMIT means nothing these days...NOTHING. Just because the class looks good right now doesn't mean SQUAT. Commits can change their mind right on up til Feb. 5th...depending on the way they feel about the program they "committed" to in July/August. Let LSU OR Bama go 3-9 and see how many top recruits either drags in come February.

Nah not me, not that I wouldn't like to I could do some fishing in Hilton head lol. How many have you attended so far?

We already talked about this on another forum lol, so I'm guessing you will do well in Venice.
Venice will be only my 4th tourney...the first two were decent...but last month in Grand Isle was a challenge. Our trolling motor went kaputz? (sp) early in the day, and we struggled to stay on our fish from that point on. Luckily, we already had our two fish limit in the boat...but it was two small ones I caught in the first 20 minutes or so. My brother/partner added another dink, but it was smaller than the two early fish, so we just headed in early and fished around the marina...to no avail.
So far, we have never failed to catch our two fish limit, so we have that to stand on...or fall off of! I am going to prefish a lot more for Venice, and hopefully we can place a little better. Our first two tourneys were good for us...considering they were our FIRST two, and we did OK the first one, and improved the second...but the third, well, we didn't fare nearly as well...finishing 63rd out of 90 something teams.
