Andre's Coming

Over the past few days, the staff has put an interesting mix out... running combos with the #1's are:
* Capps at LT and Tatum at RT
* Smith at LT and Tatum at RT
* Smith at LT and Capps at RT
IMO, although writers are speculating otherwise, I believe the staff is going to demote Tatum to 2nd team. My reasoning on why Tatum? First, the fact that Capps has been at LT the past two years suggest he is the better player... I'm aware that there's a difference between the physical demands of the two, but I am of the opinion that Capps would have been a better RT than Tatum in the past two years... and if Tatum had been our RT, we would have quickly gotten to third-fourth string on our QB depth chart. The main reasoning some people are claiming that Capps is going to be the odd man out seems to depend upon the fact that he's the one doing the swapping. My answer... if Smith ends up being the starter at LT, Capps is still our second-best LT on the team. Would make sense that the staff would want him to get some meaningful reps at the two positions... in case something happens to Andre.

The coach noted that while placekicker Jamie Christensen is on the mend that freshman Leigh Tiffin is kicking with the first unit and Andrew Friedman with the second group.

Glad to see this although keep in mind, he is only one of five on the OL...

I say this as I am rewatching the '05 Iron Bowl and AU's "Run Stopper" on defense (they named him this because he's terrible at rushing opposing qbs) already has 2 sacks matched up against our probable '06 starting RG...

The good thing is KD had some good runs and AU left the TE open alot. From what we have been hearing out of both spring and fall camp, we may have the right formula "plugged in" for '06... Sept 2. can't get here too soon...
 
what distinguishes the difference between RT and LT?

RT the strong side more run blocking?
LT pass blocking?
These are the things I would like to go over in play studies.
 
The article listed AS at 333. Is it possible he can get down below 320 before the season opener? That's a lot of extra weight for a LT required to work in space.

One's on the right and one's on the left :biggrin2: . Just kidding.

The LT is a right hand QB's blindside blocker because most teams put their better pass rushers on this end to attack a QB that can't see the pass rush coming. The LT has to be a physical player and in most cases, if he is, then alot of times teams will also run alot to that side. Stongside is determined on which side the TE sets up. As for play calling, it's just numbering and blocking assignments after that. The Left holes are always odd and the Right holes are always even. More differences between Guards and Tackles but that's another thread.

Good afternoon all. New here coming over from Tidesports.com. I know you might be worried about how our O-Line let even the barn's waterboy sack Brodie last year, but remember, we were starting a center that really shouldn't have been starting at a div. 3 school. He couldn't call blocking assignments and gave away every time we were going to pass or run the ball.
It is great having all this competition on the line, but never forget the unsung hero of the entire offense is the center. He has to make the calls for blocking assignments and is the starting point to a solid offensive unit.
If you will remember, when Caldwell came in and started during the Cotton Bowl, the blocking assignments were covered much better. I don't believe we are going to have as many sacks against us this year with this O-Line.
JMHO. Take it as you will.
