That's your point? Really? Perhaps it didn't pass, but at least they brought the subject up. They wrote a bill, they had hearings, and hell, the bill actually came to a vote. In short, they tried, which is a damn sight more than the GOP has done.

In the meantime, after God knows how many more shootings, not only does the GOP refuse to do anything (except for offer thoughts and prayers, of course), they go to any lengths to avoid the discussion (it's not a gun issue, it's a mental health issue--yet they do nothing about what they claim is the real cause--perhaps because they don't want to even suggest that there is a health care issue other than abortion that warrants government intervention).

Or today's classic, when the problem is too many freaking DOORS. (A friend of mine pointed out that Sandy Hook had just one door, btw.)

Or, my favorite, when students who were themselves SHOT AT have the unmitigated gall to call for the politicians to do something, those kids get demonized and labelled crisis actors.

But hey, damn those democrats, they could have done something, but they failed.

But at least they tried.
Sounds like our politicians on both sides failed us. It's us against them, J. Thomas....

Honest question....

Does this kid go in and do this shooting if we didn't have social media?

Not implying anything.

Just want honest opinions.....thanks!
We had shootings before social media. So the answer is unknowable.

Won't get into the problems with social media but much like another previous discussion it's more our fault for how we choose to use it rather than the sites themselves.

OK thanks for your input, Matt.

Do you feel the same way about guns as you do social media....."it's more our fault for how we choose to use them rather than the guns themselves"?

Not apples to apples I guess...but your comment struck a chord.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - Clayton County police confirm to Channel 2 Action News that two people have been shot and one of them is dead near Mt. Zion High School in Clayton County.

Investigators said both victims are females. There was a graduation ceremony happening across the street at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center.

Thanks, 92.

Any idea how this is taught? Is it integrated as a segment into a particular class.....such as Sociology?
Can't speak to this specifically but my Fiancee used to be a 3rd grade teacher and when I asked her if they taught conflict resolution in schools she replied "well, the good teachers do."

I don't have any human kids so i don't what's going on in school any more.

Just drawing on my own experiences as a kid back in the stone age....the only drills we had were in case of nuclear attack from the Russkies. My neighbor even had a bomb shelter.

I wonder what has changed since then......that causes all these shootings?

I bet if you created a chart showing a timeline of school shootings and a timeline showing social media use and overlapped them, it might be surprising to some.

http://thehill.com/opinion/technolo...icide-the-hidden-consequences-of-social-media
Fact 1: The homicide rate for 10-14 year olds in 2015 was half of what it was in 1979 (.05 vs .10).

Fact 2: The suicide rate for 10-14 year olds in 2015 is almost double what it was in 1979 (.13 vs .07). It's the highest rate in over 36 years.

Fact 3: The homicide rate for 15-19 year olds in 2015 is almost half of what is was in 1979 (.45 vs .95).

Fact 4: The suicide rate for 15-19 year olds in 2015 was 21 percent lower than in 1979 (.63 vs .79). Starting in 2007, the suicide rate began increasing after 18 years of dropping. The homicide rate also peaked that same year. In 2011, suicide overtook homicide as a cause of death for both boys and girls age 15-19. Suicide has become the second leading cause of death for boys since 2008, and since 2013 for girls.

Children ages 10-19 are statistically twice as safe from homicide as they were 36 years ago, even though the population has increased 45 percent (225 million in 1979 to 325 million in 2015).

The deluge of negative social media can't be ignored when the suicide rates for our children have increased on average 212 percent since 2007. Which begins to explain how Nikolas Cruz may have ended up with his warped view of reality.

Garbage in — garbage out.

Take Instagram as an example, where Cruz is alleged to have made many of his posts. Searching by hashtags reveals much of the violence, negative influence and harmful aspects. Want to see pictures of teens committing self-harm by cutting themselves with razors? Check #selfharmmm. Over 2 million posts. Cruz is thought to have also posted to Snap a video of cutting himself.

Another hashtag of #suicidal has over 4.7 million posts. And #suicide has over 7 million posts. On the morning of the shootings, I was conducting research of several posts on Instagram. The following, unrelated to the shooting, was posted on Feb. 14, shortly before 9 a.m. EST; the shootings at Douglas High School didn’t begin until about 2 p.m. EST:
What happened in 2007 to trigger a rise in suicide rates ?

Facebook’s platform went public in 2006 if I recall.....

We had mass killings on the planet before handguns too...didn’t we? I’m sure history books or Selma or Tidewater can back that up

No doubt social media has had a negative impact but I believe it's more of a symptom (or amplification) of a multitude other societal problems that we have allowed to happen starting long before social media. Dumbing down of our country, decline in parenting, a free society that jails more people than most (maybe all I can't remember the stat) countries, crappy wages/wealth divide/economic issues, having crazy conspiracy theories to start being amplified on talk radio & then exponentially more on the internet, growing political divide that helps ensure problems aren't easily fixed, as well as a variety of others.

Even excluding social media look at most forums, video games, chat rooms, comment sections etc and you will see so much toxicity, hate, & anger being spewed out all day everyday from people that hate their lives and are looking to lash out. It's no shock that it continues to come out into the real world.

Deleting social media isn't going to stop it. The anger, hate, hopelessness, etc is already there.

Not really sure what this even has to do with what I said. I never said anything about handguns.

You said there were school shootings before social media so its impact was unknowable. I said there were mass killings before handguns so does that mean the impact of the handgun is also unknowable?

Of course not. It sounded like you were blowing off the impact of social media in that post.

2007 was also the election of Obama. I wonder what impact his election had on suicide rates if any.
