****Bama vs. FAU - Postgame Thread****

There were several occasions when I was in the MDB where we were under explicit orders from the AD not to do RJ.

of course, it was usually a loss anyway because it was the Shula era.

For Saban, he said it was the first time he ever had a game called.

First one involving Bama that I can remember in my life. It was probably best though. At 41-0, why ask kids to go sit for at least 30 minutes, then come out and warm up in less than ideal conditions, then try to finish a game no longer in doubt? The only thing that could have been accomplished would be an unfortunate injury.
Probably a good decision for all involved.

Completely agree here. I was thinking this about one minute into the delay.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out in a tight game that Sims has a better long ball than some are giving him credit for. In my scenario, he continues to play well, building confidence...then when the chips are down he surprises the defense by making the throws he needs to make.

We've had players perform at the top of their game many times before. I like the progress Sims has shown in the last 6 months. If he keeps improving at that rate, he may surprise everybody.

Nah, that can't be it. We haven't seen Blake make a lot of deep throws, so he obviously can't do it. He can't throw it any further than 15 yards accurately. The funny thing is that he was once able to do it, but not anymore.

Baffling really. I blame Scott Cochran for putting too much muscle on his arms. That's got to be what it is.

Mind you, I know he doesn't have a cannon, but there are two groups when it comes to Blake Sims and the deep ball. The ones that know he can throw it, and the ones that think he can't.

Anyway, to further expand on the two quarterbacks, two QBs is not a death sentence. Remember Tebow's true freshman season? Leak had a great year, and Tebow was still essential to the team's success. The thing it seems like Coker is unlikely to better is Blake's ability to run a really fast, efficient offense. It's hard for me to imagine Coker running as clean a two minute drill and it seems like no matter what, Blake will probably play a continued role in some situations.

On the other hand, even if Coker is relegated to the backup role, it's very hard for me to imagine him not starting next year. A lot of his issues are a result of inexperience and the transition from Alabama to FSU. Overall, it seems like a good situation for Alabama.

Don't know how it looked on TV, but from inside the stadium the entire offense played faster with Sims in the game. It looked and felt like everyone was more comfortable.

I agree. I was there also. Noticed we are quite a bit more multiple with Sims. With Coker it was a more simple look. More base offense, maybe? I particularly liked seeing Jalston and Drake split out wide. That has mismatch written all over it.

One stat I found interesting from Eli & Co. was that Jalston has 9 career receptions, 6 of them have been for TDs.

I saw this remark from Saban after the game, I noticed what he was talking about myself.

"We probably played a little better today, but still didn't wrap up on some tackles and tried to butt people into the ground instead of tackling properly," Saban said.

You could well be right. If he does not connect on enough long balls in the easier opponents to make the defense honest, he might have to make some long passes to win.

I'm already very pleasantly surprised (not that I thought he would be bad). Blake has played quite well and done everything asked of him. Plus, he has "escapability" that AJ never had. I am comfortable with either Blake or Coker, albeit for different reasons.

Most sane post I've seen, and from a guy named Krazy! ;)

I don't believe for a second Blake has an elite arm. I just know that he can throw it well enough deep to keep defenses honest. If teams start squatting on routes and stacking the box Blake can and will burn their butts, and you are fooling yourself if you think otherwise. His mobility, pocket presence, accuracy on routine routes are very good. He also has that mental clock that tells you when it is time to get out of the pocket. The only real weakness I see in his game is the ability to throw on the run. That is more glaring than his perceived lack of a long ball, IMO.

As far as Jake goes, I think he can be really good if he puts it all together. His arm strength is undeniable, but almost every other aspect of his game needs a lot of work. Hopefully that will come with experience and learning the offense. If we get behind and need throw a hail mary, he's my guy. Otherwise, I think Blake is our best option at this point.

I want to see more designed QB draws from Sims. He is a great runner and they need to take advantage of it.

He doesn't have to be the next Joe Namath but I'm guessing he can do well enough to keep the defense honest, as you say. I feel good about things, and it looks like an interesting season ahead.
