****Bama vs. Hogs Postgame Headache Thread****

But we know he won't play until he shows Saban and Kirby he can do everything well. We face Myles Garrett Saturday. He's a true freshman "pass specialist." He isn't a very good run defender, but he already has 6.5 sacks. I wish we would use our freshmen like other teams.

We used Tim Williams as a situational pass rusher Saturday, and for my money, he was pivotal. They were gaining momentum, and when we started using him, he didn't get a sack, but most of his rushes either led to a sack, and worst case, knocked Allen off of his spot. He did a great job. There was one play where it was 3rd & 15 and he stunted and should have sacked Allen, but it instead wound up a 14 yard scramble. Once he masters actually tackling the guy when he gets there, we're cookin

Yea and I guess I don't really understand that. I mean almost all of our defensive lineman can't rush the passer well so why do they get so much PT? Shouldn't they not get PT until they know how to do everything which would include rush the passer? Who cares is we have a defensive lineman who can't stop the run but is a phenomenal pass rusher. Just play him on pass rush downs like we play the run stoppers on run downs. I understand that you are just saying what CNS has always said but it doesn't really make sense if you think about it. There are very few players who do everything well. Just like we don't really let RBs play if they don't know how to run block. Well just put them in to run the ball till they learn to run block instead of playing only one running back on a gimpy ankle against our biggest rivals. I know CNS has his system and it has produced great results, but things like this it's hard for the common fan to understand. Tim Williams was in on only a few plays but every play he was in it seemed like he was creating chaos in the backfield. We really need to see more of that..

I completely agree with you. It frustrates me. Some guys learn more by playing anyway, so the experience helps them be better at what CNS wants them to do well before they can play.

I agree, Mack. I just didn't express my frustration with CNS' style in my previous post.

Did anyone notice when Tim Williams came into the game? Today, CNS mentioned Pettway was a little injured. Did Tim come in for DJ?

I saw DJ when he got hurt. It was in the 2nd or 3rd quarter. Allen was trying for a naked boot to the right heading into the end zone, and DJ stayed home. In squaring up, he pulled up lame. Didn't make the play but he made Allen cut back in and get almost be headed by A'Shawn. Searched for most of yesterday to see what had happened to him but saw nothing posted.

Anyway, I think Dickson and Anderson just played more. I don't think we started seeing Williams until late in the 3rd. If I didn't k is better, I'd call that a halftime adjustment. This team may be ok just yet

Ok, I've had a few days to reflect. Here are my four thoughts.

1. While special teams have stunk it up with regard to basic things like - not fumbling the ball and not running into the ball - we've blocked an extra point in two straight games. I can't recall ever seeing that two weeks in a row.

2. Blake has not looked as good in his last two games as he looked in his first few. But, here are Greg McElroy's stat lines for his first few SEC games:
- against Ole Miss: 15/34 for 147 yards, 0 TDs, and 0 INTs
- against South Carolina: 10/20 for 92 yards, 0 TDs, and 2 INTs
- against UT: 18/29 for 120 yards, 0 TDs, and 0 INTs
And that was with a better OL than we have now, and with arguably better RBs.

3. I am seeing a lot of "Freshman mistakes" but they are being committed by Juniors and Seniors. That may be coaching, but it also may be immaturity. That can be fixed with a little more experience if they can learn from them. That is epitomized by our OGs - they are getting a push and handling the interior rush, but they are flinching a lot.

4. Despite the poor game, I am still optimistic about this team because I see glimpses. We still have elite talent at a lot of positions. We are young, so we should learn a lot throughout the season. And we may end up with the rare chance to play a #1 team when we have nothing to lose. Four big games left: Texas A&M, LSU, MSU, and Auburn. We can win all 4. All 4 of those teams have weaknesses just like us. Heck, MSU played UAB close.

I've mentioned that several times. I like Trey but blitzing is not exactly in his wheelhouse. We should use Rashaan Evans in that situation. He would get to the QB almost every time.

I would like to see a 3rd down package look something like this : Reed and Ashawn inside and Tim Williams and Dashawn Hand outside on the defensive line. And then bring Rashaan Evans on the weak side edge blitz, or just up the middle. We just need to get more speed and athleticism on the field when we have the offense in 3rd and long and obvious passing situations. This would help out the secondary tremendously..

i dont understand the lack of using our pass rushers on pass downs either. i've been saying it for years now. Evans and Hand are pass rushing specialists. heck i wouldnt mind seeing Dee Liner at end to see wht he can do.

Not mention a lot of times we try and "disguise" the blitz by not having all the blitzers up on the LOS. I can't stand when we do that. It never works. It just puts more pressure on the secondary to cover longer because it takes longer for the disguised blitz to get near the QB..

I caught that as well. It wasn't just that we were blitzing in a situation where the blitz was not needed, but we were blitzing from several feet back, meaning they were long-developing blitzes. The result was wide open receivers. I was very relieved when Bama abandoned this in the 4th qtr.

As for davefrat's post about Cooper, I also caught that he went out of bounds rather than fight for the 1st on that play, and I wondered if he didn't have the hit from earlier in the back of his mind...of course in the heat of the game he may have thought he had the first.

Would the 92 National Championship team have made the playoffs that year? I remember many "close" games that year. Just wondering.

Definitely. It would have been Alabama, Miami, Florida State, and perhaps Washington.

We were 12-0 and SEC champions.

Ok so I went back and looked up the 1992 season and Washington would not have made it. I was thinking of 1991 Washington, who shared the NC with Miami.

It likely would have been 1. Miami vs. 4. Notre Dame (or perhaps Texas A&M) and 2. Alabama vs. 3. Florida State.

I think I remember seeing Pettway turn an ankle while giving chase to Allen on the play that he got dinged up. If I remember correctly (I had a few adult beverages during the game) ESPN showed a replay of it.

He was very very good as I mentioned in my earlier post. I would disagree that his insertion was a halftime adjustment though. We continued to do the "well disguised" house blitz throughout the third and even into the 4th quarter I believe. For about the last three series Arkansas ran we stopped doing this and had a 4 man rush with Anderson and Williams being the rush ends, we got more pressure with that group than we did bringing however many we were earlier in the game.

I pray the staff saw the effectiveness of that group and tries to use it again. Texas A&M is one of the teams that we recruited these fast twitch players to counter, I will be very upset if we don't see these guys on the field more this week than any other this season.
