****Bama vs. LSU Postgame Thread***

When I say the refs travel, I was supporting Earle's point in the quoted post. Mike Kitts has officiated in 20 different states this year. James Barker has called games in 14 different states. Tim Gattis has been to 15 states to officiate.

In regards to my comment about the fouls, look at the total number of fouls called in the game compared to each ref's other games. The game had 46 fouls called. Look at the below table of each referee's total number of games, number of 40+ foul games, and foul per game average for the season.

Tim Gattis

Gattis has been in 40+ foul games, but all were at least 12 fouls over their average.
I we were playing really roughly, that would be understandable, but it's not the case...

I hope he didn't give the impression that they are officiating only in the SEC, because that's simply not true. Those located towards the middle will largely officiate here because of travel cost. Those in the peripheral areas officiate in other conferences in easy traveling distance. That's been the case for years now...

No, he did not give that impression. He just said that was the pay scale in the SEC. I would assume that other conferences are at least somewhat comparable, so you can see why they are constantly working 4-5 games per week. They are racking up.

Believe it or not, I think we're actually paying a premium over the other conferences...

Note comments about refs being independent contractors, just as Earle and others have mentioned about our SEC refs. Looks like it raises accountability problems for other conferences too. Meanwhile the refs are raking in pretty good dough from multiple conferences.

Glad to see Curtis Shaw call them what they are "independent contractors." Too often the media calls them SEC or Big 12 or Big 10 officials. That's not the case. With the current setup, officials can do whatever they want. In football, the SEC can punish poor officiating. In basketball, the SEC can not use those officials, but the officials can go officiate another conference's game.
