Bama vs. UF Postgame Thread...

Except 5 straight NCAA appearances, and an elite 8 run.
We're not going to drag it out and discuss it here, because, thank goodness, it didn't become public the way Price did, but Gottfried was let go for personal behavior issues just as much as his slumping record (probably interrelated)...

I feel I have the right to criticize to some extent. I've been a season ticket holder since the late 90's. I am sick and tired of watching us get close to taking that next step to becoming a great team only to drop faster than a rock. It happened this year and it happened several times during CMG tenure. I talked us up to anyone who would listen this year. I go to the games and end up with my head in my hands because we show poor effort and end up losing games we should win. I ended last year at the NIT games in T-town with an almost certainty that we'd being the big dance this year only to see the team absolutely self destruct.

I see some very disturbing signs with this team. No CAG can not be there every minute of every day, but that is not the point. The reason CNS has an extremely disciplined team is that the kids fear him. CAG needs to instill a little fear in the guys to keep them in line. As a coach is it more important to be feared or respected? I think you need both and I don't see that from the kids right now. That simple fact is the major reason I am concerned.

Absolutely you, as a ticket holder and fan, have every right to criticize in my opinion. I was referring to the folks who two month's ago would have to ask what our record was and never watched a game or read the news stories, posted on a thread, nothing. But when we start losing a few they're suddenly appearing all over the place criticizing the coach.

It has a little more to do with football players knowing they are disposable. Roster of 85 versus a roster of 13. There is always someone behind you in football that’s capable of taking your place. Not so much in basketball. These suspensions are probably Coach Grant’s way of letting them know “I’m willing to lose without you.”

You are right. It is a fact he has some personal family issues that weren't widely reported. Suffice it to say, it wase public knowledge around the University, but it wasn't reported out of a rare amount of respect from the media for his family.

I support Coach Grant and think he deserves more time to right the ship. That said, I am disappointed with the results so far this season. I felt going in that we had a team that could potentially compete for the SEC title, and instead we're a middle-of-the-pack squad that appears to have noticeably regressed from a year ago. I'm not pinning all of the blame on Coach Grant, but I will say that I don't think this staff has done a good job of offensive player development. I don't think it's emphasized. We are clearly an elite defensive team, and most of the time our guys really hustle and play hard (they get suspended if they don't). This is a clear improvement over the previous regime. However - and maybe it's just my perception -but it seems like Coach Grant and his staff are not overly concerned about offensive development. They seem content to win games on great hustle, defensive effort and low-post scoring. It's like there's no backup plan if that doesn't work out. We have no shooters and are utterly incapable of scoring consistently outside of the low post game. Well-executed zone defenses completely muzzle our offense.

I'll reiterate that I think Coach Grant deserves more time, especially considering that he inherited a few knuckleheads from the Gottfried era who are seemingly incapable of changing their ways. But I would definitely like to see our team develop some semblance of shooting ability. I think that starts with recruiting - it seems like for a long time now, dating back to the last few years of the Gottfried era, that we've recruited a ton of excellent athletes but great pure basketball players have been few and far between. IMO, we need to sign a couple of pure shooters who can be developed into better athletes.

To Sip's point earlier --- if we get on a run -- win the last 5, roll the SEC Tournament and upset UK -- the same bashers will be pushing for Grant to be signed to a 10 year contract!

I find it quite funny that a lot of these same bashers wanted him to get a raise for making the NIT championship...

It was discussed generally, on other boards, just not on TF. In fact, the reason I mentioned it was to forestall it's coming up for discussion. Apparently one (former) member thought I was mentioning it because of, I guess titillation. It is important, though, in that it definitely greased the skids for him...

I do agree we have a slight chance at the tourney with the scenario you just laid out, but I unfortunately do not see it happening. Lets look at the remaining schedule objectively
Tennessee- At best a toss up. UT has been bad on the road, but Pearl left the cupboard full of talent.
Arkansas- We play at Walton arena and they have been tough up there. I think it is winnable with a full complement of players which I do not think we will have.
State- We play here in T-town, but if we don't have our big's back by then, we are in trouble. Moultire killed us in the last game with them and I'd hate to see him run wild with no one to defend him.
Boogs- Again we play at home, I think we win, but it won't be as easy as many people think.
Ole Miss - We went to double OT the last time and I expect we should win, but it will be close.

Assuming we go 4-1 which would put us at 20-9 going into the SEC tourney, We will have to win at least to the semis to get in which would put us at about 22-10. It then depends on our RPI. If we go 3-2, I think we are done.

I think if we have 19 wins going into the SEC Tournament that we'll make the NCAA. Our RPI will be very strong if we close with at least three wins.

It totally depends on our RPI. The problem is we have several bad losses. USC, Dayton, and LSU. It also depends on the subjective criteria the committee decides to use this year.

It is critical we get back to full strength or all this talk is academic. If we do not have a full squad, we won't likely go 3-2.

It looks like my love for the mid majors may come back to hurt Bama basketball two years in a row. That's assuming we can get to 8-8 in conference play. I say that b/c we didn't get in at 12-4 last year and under MG we got in at 7-9 and 8-8. That was during a time when mid majors weren't getting at-large bids. They SEC would get 6-7 teams in the dance and all you needed was a .500 record. I guess the lesson for me is to be careful what you ask for.

The killer loss, to me, was Georgetown. If they miss that 35 foot jumper we're sitting at 17-8, and even with all the problems we'd still be looking pretty darn good because of a big win over a very quality Big East team.

That being said I'll quote Socrates..."If the proverbial toad frog had wings"....

No, it's time to put up or shut up. We HAVE to win our home games. That simple.

If we lose another home game we don't deserve a bid unless we win the SEC Tournament.

But I know we have the potential.

IF IF IF.....Toad(Tony) and Frog(Green) can get their act together we can make a leap.

If they can't then we're probably done.

I just hope they realize their potential and start being leaders for a critical stretch.

Not sure why people are downing Dayton so much - they are 16-9 and have a real time rpi of 66. But bottom line is Bama nneds to forget computers and remember winning.

Re: Anthony Grant...Inventory Should be Taken on his Status as Head Coach

Are you really comparing Alabama basketball to Alabama football? Are you really comparing Coach Grant to Nick Saban. How many players can a football coach bring in a given year? How many can a basketball coach bring in? Apples to oranges. Just look at the SEC numbers. No separation from Gottfried? Grant has won more SEC games in 2.5 years than MG did in his first 3 or in his last 3. We played the #12 team in the nation without our two best players. What did you expect?

I really think some people post without putting things in perspective or knowing just how long it takes to build a basketball program. If we fire Anthony Grant I'm willing to bet his coaching career turns around before the Alabama basketball program wins the SEC and is winning multiple games in the NCAA tourney.

I do not want to see Anthony Grant get canned. Not by any means. A decade ago in football, we went through coach after coach and it was detrimental to the program. But, over the long haul, I do want CAG to have more to his credit than just beating auburn every year.

I won't disagree with that. I guess it depends on what some consider "the long haul." That's why I offer arkansas as an example. In 2007 they fired Stan Heath after 5 years and 2 straight trips to the NCAA in tournament. In their minds the program wasn't where it needed to be. 4 years later they fire John Pelphrey b/c he didn't rebuild the program fast enough. After 9 years and two coaches their program still sucks. I thought Coach Grant had a 12 SEC, a divisional championship, and a trip to the NIT finals to show for it. Some coaches would kill for that in the first two years of a major rebuilding project...

I agree with this. Neither Ole Miss nor Arkansas would be considered a "bad loss" on the road, but I think another home loss torpedoes our tournament chances, barring a decent run in the SEC tourney. If we win out at home and maybe take one game in the SEC tourney then I think we get in. Our RPI would still be pretty stout in that scenario and we'd have a win against a quality team in MSU.
