Beating Bama with Hurts at QB

A lot of those skills are rooted in genetics.

No question! Not that high-level athletes don't train and improve, but things like "awareness," "anticipation," "vision" and "timing" are things that some people just have a natural, God-given gift for. It's an ability to see something in your mind before others physically can see it.

I'd compare this in QBs to elite point guards in basketball.

I didn’t see a recruiting thread on the first page, but does anyone know who our current QB target is to recruit since we aren’t getting Fields, Lawrence, Coral, or Emory Jones? You’d think we could have gotten one of those. We need to get one for depth in case of injuries. He could get a chance to learn the system for a year if nothing else. If Mac happens to transfer, that just leaves Jalen and Tua. That’s okay as long as they stay healthy.

I recall the story of rookie Peyton Manning studying his playbook while eating Wendy's in the parking lot. Successful QBs have a certain nerd quality to them.

Jones will likely transfer in the next year or so. Chances are Tua or Hurts transfer as well at some point.

It's odd that neither of his sons inherited his agility, his "slipperyness" and elusivity. I think I invented a couple of words there... :D

Agreed both look like statues most time. They got the football smarts, and a life of training, but not the feet. Must have gotten the running from Mama. LOL No offense to their mom at all, but they did not get Archies running ability.

FWIW, I remember Coach Bryant said one time "three things happened when you throw a pass, and two of the are bad", or words to that effect.
Four things can happen when you run the ball and three of them are bad.

1. Gain yards - same as completed pass: good.

2. Run for no gain - same as incomplete pass: bad.

3. Fumble - same as interception: bad.

4. Run for negative yardage: bad.

2, 3 and 4 can happen on a completed pass.

Fields to UGA
Lawrence to Clemson
Jones to UF
Coral to Ole Miss

None of those QBs were coming to Alabama to ride the pine behind Hurts or Tua. Wonder how Smart is going to handle the Fromm, Eason, Fields competition. Eason probably transfers, leaving Fromm and Fields to compete. It has the potential to be like the Alabama quandary.

I agree. Some QB's can quickly scan the field for open receivers and get the ball to the right guy. Some just do not have that inherent ability and are unable to fully develop that skill. I give Hurts credit because he is a fine athlete and very elusive as a runner, but an accomplished (polished) passer he is not.

Fact is this:

Offensive stats from 2016 and 2017 are nearly identical.

Difference is in 2016 we had 25+ defensive TDs

That 2016 defense played 90+ snaps against Clemson.

What have we seen that says this offense can miraculously sustain long drives to keep our defense off the field?

This x1000... it won't likely be the case with Jalen at QB AND Saban insisting on 50/50 run pass (in reference to sustained drives).

If the wishbone was still in vogue Jalen would be an AWESOME QB. If he would have been around years ago someone like Barry Switzer would have gone all out to recruit him.

Let me guess...you have JH transferring out? smh...

I don’t know. I have a hard time imagining a QB of Tua’s ability playing backup for 2 more years or Hurts losing his job in the next year and not transferring.

The chances that Hurts keeps the starting job for 2 more years *and* that Tua sits behind him are pretty much zero.

Welcome to Tidefans, Paul Johnson...

Not sure why so many find it hard to believe, for decades no one passed, and now most pass a lot. There is no one right way, you can win games in a lot of ways. For the stat junkies go look it up, I have seen teams win games with the worst run and or pass stats. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

My cats want to I know why you have to skin a cat, why not skin a dog or one of those damn noisey squirrels?! VBG
