Butch Davis

There is no logical reason to give up on CMS so quickly.

Agreed. Butch Davis had his chance to be coach at Alabama and turned it down. In fact, I think he turned it down twice if my memory serves me correctly.

Mike Shula is our coach, and we are going to seriously contend for a championship next year, both SEC and BCS. We have a very young team right now. Despite that, we are still playing tough top ten teams extremely close. Give us a year of experience and we will be beating all those teams. Not to mention most of our tough games are home next year (other than AU and FSU).

In fact they would not have given him a pay raise last year and extended his contract if they did not believe just that.

That pay raise had nothing to do with whether or not they thought Shula would be around a while. They had to do it. Looks bad when the coach at Alabama is not in the upper tier of the highest paid coaches in the SEC.

Tider B that could be partially true and I agree that the coach at Alabama should be in the upper tier, but it was not the only reason because if it was, using that logic they would have paid him that in the beginning!!!

ya i can see it now...

coach moore and shula sittin in his office after the season last year...

"well mike.. we both know your a terrible coach.. i mean you just gave us 10 wins and got a cotton bowl win for us!...

but i've been looking at the list of highest paid SEC coaches and it really really bothers me that you aren't up there! ...so im gonna extend your contract and give you a raise BUT ONLY because you arent one of the SEC's highest paid coaches!"...

Shula is not going anywhere. The people who matter(Mal Moore), etc. are pleased that he has accomplished what he was supposed to accomplish so far in the process. He won 10 games last year and those people I am referring to did not expect that. Remember what he was brought here to do:

1. Establish stability, and see Alabama through a 5 to 6 year period of troubled times from the NCAA mess. We are just now getting near the end of the effects.

2. Improve recruiting so that we can compete. That has been done and when the last 2 classes he has signed are upper classman we will be on equal footing.

3. Keep us out of trouble with the NCAA. Like it or not this is the most important thing our coach has to do right now, and the powers that be know Shula will do just that.

4. Finally, learn on the job. They knew he was going to struggle in certain areas, and they are patient with him. They needed someone loyal and they are being loyal to him.

Mike Shula is doing what he was brought here to do and soon that will include winning championships. He may need to make some changes in philosophy and staff to do that and I am confident he will make those changes if he thinks he needs to. But you know it does not matter what any of us think, because the people who matter at the University expect Mike Shula to be around a long time. In fact they would not have given him a pay raise last year and extended his contract if they did not believe just that.

Sums up my sentiments at the present time. Now after next year and we haven't made progress with the OL I'll be singing a different tune.

If Carolina is offering BD a long term contract at 2 mil per, he better jump on it because he won't get anything like that from Miami. Not to mention that the UNC job is actually a better job. Much better facilities, fan support, booster support and they have their own stadium. The only advantage UM has is that they're in the middle of a recruiting hotbed, but Butch has been fishing those waters for a long time.

Last but not least, at UNC, he wouldn't be working for Donna Shalala.

If you will remember Gottfried got a nice, new, big contract putting his compensation over Shula's. It was in quite a few newspapers and all over the internet, that Alabama's basketball coach made more than the football coach. You heard garbage about Alabama now being a "basketball school." You can imagine the embarrassment for a supposedly "football school", so that situation was rectified. The 10 win season was a good excuse and the long-term contract was supposed to help out with recruiting showing stability after grumblings after last year's end of the season collapse. Those are the reasons that the raise was given at that time, it was all for appearances.

 ...wow

Today long term contracts don't mean squat. I never understood why CMS was one of the lowest paid coaches in the SEC when we are one of the most profitable schools in the country?
If you want a winning program you put your money where your mouth is! Look at auburn, for years it was hard to find good assistants. Now they have the highest payed staff in the country and can hire almost anyone they want. Money talks BS walks.

25 wins. 20 losses. Bring on Butch!

My feeling is no other Coach, Butch Davis or anyone else who is worth his salt would consider Alabama as a viable job offer at this time.

Why?

1) We ( I include myself here), have unrealistic expectations. I for one think we should win every game we won't and I have to accept this fact.

2) We currently have a Coach who has been a stable force in our program, has recruited well. Beat expectations last year 10-2 season and is meeting most preseason expectations 7-5 or 8-4.

3) Has had us in every game that we've played in this year. Yet is lambasted for poor coaching calls...personel decisions..helmet color :p I think he would have been better off getting blowed out in these games, just to prove how bad of a team we are. Again these were games in the preseason that were written off in the L column before a played was snapped by most of us.

I also think this is internet fodder, fodder that we will see impact the program not in playcalling or personnel changes but in recruiting. If as a player I am getting ready to sign a letter of intent, I would have second thoughts about signing with a program that has a Coach on the verge of being let go.

You can bet Auburn, Tennessee, LSU and every other SEC school will have this in their recruiting playbook this offseason.... I would.

Don't kid yourself. There would be a line of coaches a mile long wanting this job. It's a great job.

BTW, this discussion is moot. CMS is our coach and will continue to be our coach for the forseeable future.

That link literally has nothing to do with Butch Davis. It's about Bill Davis, an FSU booster.

I believe the two are related IMO. Meaning the article and Butch Davis. If I were to guess I would say its not Alabama Butch Davis is looking at, its FSU. Coach Shula isn't going anywhere. I doubt seriously Miami would take Davis back and I doubt he would go back to Miami. I could be wrong but I do not think so. :BigA:

Way to stick to your guns. However, your original post and linked article are misleading at best. If you have any real info on Butch Davis, it would be appreciated.

I've heard the talk of other coaches better suited to coach the Tide (primarily Davis & Tommy Bowden). Well Davis flopped miserably at his last job, and since taking over at clemson in 1999 Tommy Bowden has yet to finish in the top 10, win 10 games in a season, make a major bowl, or win a major bowl (Shula did all 4 last year).

I know everyone hates the youth argument, but on Bama's complete 2-deep chart (kickers included - 48 players), only 13 are seniors. Only 2 sr starters on the entire offense, none on the OL and only 1 sr on the OL 2-deep (including TEs). Shula deserves the chance to come back and coach this team, and he will get it barring a total meltdown.

Right again, Tommy Mac this is exactly what I said on another thread. I suspect if anyone besides UNC is testing the waters with Butch Davis it could possibly be FSU (although I would be surpirsied). Loved your comment about Donna Shalala, now she knows a lot about football. :biggrin2:

I think this post about sums it up. I agree 100%. Yes, we are Alabama and we have very high expectations and our patience is wearing thin. But we've just got to suck it up and face the reality that things will not be back to 100% for 2 more years. I believe we should be significantly better next year and by 2008 we should have every right to expect nothing but greatness out of our program again.
