Coaching carousel 2025-26

Listening to Finebaum and Dinnich on GETUP this morning , saying Early Signing is the problem for Kiffin, he had to recruit for LSU.and for the all the coaches taking jobs before their team is finished this year. I’m screaming at the idiots when they say nothing can be done about it. Hey, move signing day back to February, or mid January so they can early enroll for spring ball. And yes, the way CFB is moving, most schools will allow for delayed enrollment. Mid January signing would only affect 4-8 teams.
Move it back to February for fall enrollees but allow early enrollees to sign whenever they want after December 1st.

What everyone needs to remember is in the SEC or other conferences there’s not an infinite number of players that you can sign. The teams that can coach up their roster will be on top. Retaining that roster will be the key. Money will factor in for sure but teams that show up with 3rd and 4th year players will have the best success. Take a look at the NCAA basketball tournament.

This isn’t something that is new. Alabama (especially under CNS) went out of state nationally.

A lot because he re-built Bama on the national scene…but also because we have an in-state little brother. Even though our recruiting classes are great, Auburn last year signed like 9 out of the top 10 players in state.

So, not having an in state rival absolutely is a recruiting advantage even still.
Last year was a unique recruiting circumstance, proven by this year.

Alabama is wise not to over emphasize in state recruiting. 2 great corners both from the other side of the country, California. #3 is also. Alabama recruits nationally because she can.

If two players are being considered for the same roster spot and they are evaluated as essentially the same, sure, take the local kid. If there is a discernible difference you are foolish to go local.

The Saban Alabama staff said that if they “really” wanted an instate kid, the likelihood of getting him was 90%. It has always been at least ~70%. Under DeBoer, it will likely be 70-85%. But they are wise to not focus on the state, yet remain in the good graces of the local HS coaches. Saban often did this by publicly offering instate kids when Alabama was not really interested. This would raise his profile on the national scene giving the kid great exposure and pleasing the HS coaches, though the main parties knew the score.

I'm guessing the barn got who they wanted.
Not really. They wanted Kiffin or an established P4 coach but none were interested. Then they wanted Sumrall, he chose UF.

Then, they turned to Golesh, who is not a bad consolation prize, certainly better than being stuck with Durkin.

If the rumors are true that Sumrall turned them down after they told him he wouldn't have control of his staff and would have to retain Durkin and Nix... They botched it.

I think this is a major part of the equation and one that DeBoer will excel at. We will see teams occasionally rebuild solely from the portal and have a solid year, but in general I think you will see teams that excessively depend on the portal reach a level that you can't get past when you have a team of mercenaries that don't have the experience of playing together. Likewise... Pull too many fives stars in your high school recruiting class, don't play them, and they'll get poached.

It will very much be your total roster going forward... supplemented by the portal. But having an offensive and defensive system players can learn quickly, getting younger guys snaps to keep them happy, and adapting quickly will be the key. I feel we are well set on all of these fronts.

I guess I don’t understand this. For 25 years, my wife and I lived and taught on the Navajo Nation, in the middle of nowhere. The nearest Walmart or grocery store was an hour away, and Flagstaff, AZ—the nearest large city—was two hours away. Our daughter was born there and lived there until she finished 10th grade. We lived in government housing.

Last year, we moved to Gulfport, MS, to give our daughter more opportunities as she reaches the age for postsecondary education. Does ego play that much of a role in “coaching”? You’re still a teacher!

Lane Kiffin didn't build anything in Oxford, Coach.

With the way things are now nobody is building anything anywhere anymore. NIL can make, or destroy any program from one year to the next.

Although he wanted to go the pros for about a day, I guess this is a little more insight into Nick Saban and why their will never be another Coach Bryant.

Josh Pate was reportedly saying that Jon Sumrall was pretty much “closed” on the Auburn job. However John Cohen attempted to strong arm Sumrall into retaining Durkin as the DC. Part of the deal with Sumrall was “autonomy” in staff decisions. When Cohen attempted to shove Durkin down his throat, Sumrall said “Thanks but no thanks”.
And there's nothing saying Sumrall wouldn't have kept Durkin on his own.

Principles.
