Rookie LB Courtney Upshaw learned a valuable lesson on his first day of training camp: Be prepared.
Upshaw, drafted 35th overall by the Ravens in the Draft, failed his first attempt at passing Baltimore's conditioning test, which immediately placed him on the non-football injury list. Upshaw passed on his second attempt and was present Tuesday for Baltimore's first practice, which featured rookies, quarterbacks and injured veterans from 2011.
"A couple of guys will learn their lesson the hard way, as far as the conditioning test and practicing at our pace," coach John Harbaugh said.
Baltimore's conditioning test consists of six sets of running 150 yards. Depending on certain variables with each individual player, there is a set time to finish these sets, which are broken down into 25-yard runs. The idea is to assess a player's recovery time between sets and how well the player's body changes direction while placing stress on the muscles.

You would think a former player of CNS would know what was expected of him on his first day on the job, and be able to meet those expectations.
 
Cody failed his first time as well (when he was a rookie). Actually, he may have even failed it twice. Cant remember, but I know he failed it at least once.

Cody failed it multiple times... I think over a longer span that actually put his training cap into question....

I read somewhere back then that these tests are typically designed to have a low pass rate so as to "motivate" rookies.

Here is what they have to do:

The players have to sprint a total of 900 yards – nine football fields. It’s broken into six chunks.One heat is a player starting at the goal line, sprinting to the 25-yard line and back three times. That’s 150 yards. Then they get a rest before darting out again. Six times.If you fail to make your time in any of the six legs, you flunk the whole test.

This is what we did when I was a Drill Sergeant......usually, unless they were a stud, wouldn't come close to passing the physical fitness test at the beginning of training.....tear them down, then build them up like the other poster stated:cool:
 
This makes it all the more remarkable that he was able to take the test again and pass, only missing the walk-through and then practicing. The dude ran 1800 yards........and then went through an NFL practice. That's incredible.

NFL practices are not as strenuous as most top notch high school practices are. The higher the level you get the less "hustle" the coaches need to see, they already know what you can do, now they just need to perfect the skill of the game.
