Wonder what Coach Bryant would say about punting. Remember his first year when the quick kick was a major weapon. He had little offense and a hard nosed defense.(Does that sound familiar today). I remember a Georgia game, believe Ga was heavily favored, where the first play was an eight-yard gain and the second was a quick kick. I think he would say you use the best weapon in your arsenal. Right now, its not our offense.

just doing a little math here , and assuming the field was 100 yards long, with a play of 80 yds, we would have been inside the 20 . what would be the purpose of punting on 1st down inside the 20. are you sure that you've got your facts straight. even if we had a horrible offense i just can't believe that any coach would punt on first down inside the opposing teams 20 on the second play of the game right after an 80 yd play.

i know this really has nothing to do with this thread, but i just thought this post was interesting to say the least :conf2:

General Neyland quick-kicked on the early downs a LOT, especially in bad weather. I remember reading about him in a game played in a driving rain, (I believe it was against BAMA) he repeatedly quick-kicked on first or second down. Won the game too. A great punter is a real asset to a team.

Good punting helps, but what Freeland did in the first half with 3 straight sub-40 yard punts helped Tennessee score a td which was the difference in the game.

So what do you suggest? Should we put him in front of a firing squad or just kick him off the team?

Rightwinger,
Actually, the difference in the game was the fumble on the opening possession for Bama's offense that resulted in the Vile touchdown. Take away that fumble, and Bama beats the Viles the old fashioned way on strong defense and kicking.

Bat...

You obviously have not read all the thread. I'm talking about use of words like "moron" above. "You all make me want to puke" is pretty close, also. This seems like a topic that should be discussable with something better than that...

Consider the following:

- You have a defense that 80% of the time will make the opposition go 3 and out.

- You have an offense that has a 20% chance of getting a first down.

Now... If you find yourself in a 3rd and long from your own 20, here's why it's smart to quick-kick: no one's back to field the punt. You send a line-drive down the field and pin them very deep in their own territory. Now guess what? You've got an 80% chance of getting the ball back in better field position than you gave it up. That's what's known as the 'battle of field position', of which punting is a HUGE piece.

We punted for two reasons:

First - Our defense was playing very well and we were going to get the ball back with plenty of time left on the clock - that worked...

Second - When the defense got the ball back for us, we would have decent field position, providing the offense with another chance to win the game - that worked...

By punting, we gave ourselves another chance to win. We lost, but not because we punted. .....

And third, because they didn't get enough yards on 3rd down to move the chains. That's the main reason for punting.

And as far as Freeland's punting on Saturday--it was definately sub-par. The numbers don't show it, but he DID have short kicks in the first half with little hang time. The one that was run back 40-something yards was a line-drive. Simply a poor punt. That play was obviously very critical for the outcome of the game.

I think we should have run that fake punt play where Freeland takes the snap and runs around the end. It worked vs UK...
