Defensive Questions for Bama vs. UGA

Say what you want but Bama's CB defense has been balling out. It works.
Upon reflection, I`d have to concede that. I guess it`s just those recurring nightmares of guys " not in phase " never looking back and either drawing DPIs or having the receiver make the catch literally on the top of the DB`s helmet.

Honest question.

Saban said they practice the 4/31 play. It isn’t technically a Hail Mary.

Do teams actually practice a Hail Mary or is that just throw it up and pray?

Really depends on what you want to call a Hail Mary. Hail Mary is more a category than a play. All teams have plays that are chunk and pray aka Hail Mary but they are all actual plays as in wrs have routes and know where to go. Teams just have different names for the plays other than Hail Mary.

We are going to need a great day by the secondary covering AND tackling.; Beck gets the ball out in 2.35 seconds, #1 rated and is second most accurate in the country. It will be a challenge for our rush to get to him much.
BTW; Tua's time this year is 2.37.
They are going to have to get their hands up and hopefully block some passes.

Not an expert. It seems that we have moved Downs to Nickel though which means he could be the guy on Bowers the most often if that holds. We really need a big game from out DL but they have a maybe elite OL. Stopping the run game and getting pressure on Beck with 4 will be big so we can play more coverage on the back end and hopefully force Beck to hold the ball a tick longer because he gets the ball out fast.

Idk what they will do vs us. I'd bet the spy Milroe selectively but not every play.
I saw that in the Auburn game. Moore was playing free and Downs slid to play star some in that game

That really wasn't a hail mary A hail mary and its derivative , Big Ben is truly a practiced lucky play with receivers more hoping to get the carom than actually catch the pass. What was ran Saturday was run to the endzone then run a pattern .

Like I said depends how you want to define it but Hail Mary got its name “due to the difficulty of a completion with this pass, it makes reference to the Catholic"Hail Mary" prayer for strength and help.”

You’re making into more than what it is used for now which really is a general term now other than people who want to get even more specific. Both are plays that are practiced so not a ton difference. To each their own.

I caught that the first time, but the point being a Hail Mary usually involves multiple receivers in the same area, most of them playing the deflection.

Yeah, the play that beat AU wasn’t IMO a Hail Mary at all. It was a well designed play that was executed almost perfectly. It’s true that AU should have been in a defense that would’ve made that throw near impossible. But not at all a Hail Mary. I mean I’m sure many were praying when the ball was in the air😂, much like the long ball you guys beat us with in overtime in 2017. It was just a very good and fortuitous play.!

This is the correct answer. In the classic "Hail Mary," the defense tried to gather in the probable area where the pass will come down, trying to elbow out the offensive receivers. In the "Grave Digger," it's the opposite. Our receivers spread over the EZ. leaving it up to Milroe to pick out the one who has the best chance of catching it...

So, I see Jess in his write up gives Georgia six out of the eight categories in this game. Defensive line and the dB's to Georgie. If Bama can control the defensive line and make Beck uncomfortable in the pocket, slow the run down some. Bama will be in this game. Bame cannot let Geargia run all over them or it will be a long day.

Lot of good points on here.

Bama: Mix up the coverage calls. Blitzes to confuse them. Force them to make mistakes. Get to Beck often. We need to create 14-21 points leading into 3rd quarters. Put them in unfamiliar position. Play balanced offense. Go slow/Tempo. We just need to send message.

Reminder: The pressure is on Georgia. Lot of attention on them. Too much disrespect toward Bama and Bama thrives on that.

On SEC postgame CNS said that after the 1st drive UA changed their defensive front from odd to even because of what UGA was doing. Rushing 4 they were still able to get pressure...my guess is a 4-2-5.
