Wow. The Mets wasted their 23rd round pick on Mississippi State bench-warmer Jeff Flagg. I am tempted to say that the phrase "looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" applies to him, but that would actually be an insult to Jane, who is about ten times the ballplayer Flagg is.
What a joke.
And it only gets worse...talk about a classic example of a player getting a chance only because of he happens to be 6'7. This is where scouting crosses the line from inexact science to utter stupidity. Yes, the Rangers selected RHP Justin King from Jacksonville State. If that name sounds familiar, it's because he originally came to Alabama for one fall. I've seen a lot of players come and go at Alabama, and of all of them, King was undeniably the most out-of-place. The poor guy had absolutely no ability whatsoever. I'm not exaggerating. It was so pathetic, you almost felt sorry for him. Mercifully, he realized that he was in over his head and bolted for JSU, where he continued to struggle for the next three years. Because he's tall and has a little velocity, he continues to get opportunities that much more deserving players will never have. It's an injustice. So what if he's got height and might hit 90 mph on a good day? He can't find the plate anyway. Sorry to rant, but this is just an egregious example of the nonsensical, inherent biases that exist in scouting. This kid has no business playing college baseball, much less professional baseball. Nathan Kilcrease has more talent in one fingernail than this guy does, yet barring a dramatic growth spurt, Kilcrease has about a 0.00001% chance of ever being drafted and pitching professionally.
