I posted about this a couple years back, but I can't find the thread. Anyway, my old DVD player went out, so I went and bought a cheapy from Walmart. Well it has this type connection.

My tv has this type connection:

I couldn't get the picture in color when I used the connection the way they said to on the dvd player. It was black and white, and then I tried switching the cables around and nothing showed up.

Do I need to get a more expensive dvd player that will connect exactly like my tv or what do I need to do?

Thanks, peeps!

I looked that model up on Walmart's website. $24.88 is definitely cheap. You can buy the Sanyo FWBP505F for $49.98 if you want to stay the cheaply route. It's only $49.98 online at Walmart and has an HDMI out slot.

If you don't want to bring it back -- you can plus the yellow video out and put it in the green video in on the TV. Quality is not as good as HDMI -- but if the budget is tight....it will still work.

I agree with seeing about getting one with an HDMI connection. It makes everything so much easier and is better quality. So, I am guessing you don't have a game system? I am asking since we haven't bought a DVD player in a very long time. We use our game systems..if we ever need a DVD player.

This is the year 2017, and companies make DVD players without HDMI slots?

I have a PS3 but have to use a Blu-Ray player for some discs. When I researched the problem, I discovered the earlier generation PS3s don't read every kind of BR disc. Sony offered a refund of like $150 if the costumer decided to return the machine and purchase a newer one.

For real. I figured any of them would have the setup I needed, but once I got it out of the box, I was like nope this isn't going to work.

I don't use my DVD player all too often, so I don't want to spend big bucks. You get what you pay for I guess.

I think I tried that, but it kept being in black and white. It said go into settings and switch something, but the DVD player was slow and laggy, so I boxed it back up and will be returning it.

I believe that's how Walmart offers some really low cost options: selling models that don't have all the same features as what you might elsewhere.

Yesterday I picked up a good Sony Blu-Ray player in the WalMart clearance section for $50.
I've gotten into the habit of going through the clearance section at WalMart and Target for electronics like that. Might be discounted for a very picky reason, and I can get what I want at cheaper price. Also, Best Buy allows customers to shop for items that are "open box" in nearby stores online. Since they were open for display purposes or something else, they are cheaper.

Target has the best clearance in this regard. I find that I only walk the back aisles at Target now for this reason. There are nearly always great clearance finds

Look at JT's post above, Jessica. The DVD format is on the way out. AFAIK, all the Blu-Rays will play DVDs also and you get access to the higher-definition format...

technically both formats are on their way out with streaming taking over for all physical media based formats but a decent bluray player is still worth having

And if you can get a smart bluray player, you can have best of both depending on the apps, right?

I have a couple of Bluray players that also do netflix and a few others and I've ditched them for Roku's as roku has a far better interface and offer a better user experience
