I am thinking about ruths chris on friday or friday night. It is always very good.
Have you ever tried Hal's steakhouse in Buckhead? Puts Ruths Chris to shame. The Filet is bigger than your fist. And they have a bone in rib-eye the size of a plate.

Many of the restaurants mentioned so far are fairly traditional, and if that's what you want, go for it. If super-traditional is what you're looking for, also add Anthony's to your list. Very southern in style and hospitality. 1980s in terms of high-style food. I highly recommend Floataway cafe near Emory University. Very modern, yet still romantic, and excellent food. Also consider Watershed in Decatur. Food is award-winning, yet atmosphere is not intimidating and is more casual (maybe too casual for the event). South City Kitchen on the west side of Midtown is also award winning, but a little loud. The Inn at Vinings, while a little boring on the food side, may work well for romance. I would avoid Bone's (while excellent). It's more of a men's club. Sundial is interesting because of the rotating floor, but it's very "touristy". I vote Floataway.

The choices in this town are endless.

For Steakhouses take your pick:

Bones in Buckhead
Chops in Buckhead
NY Prime in Buckhead
Mortons in Buckhead
-These will all run you $150+.

Fogo de Chao is wonderful but is a true Brazilian all you can eat steakhouse. Not the best place to pop the question.

For ambience, Hals, City Grille, the restaurant on top of Peachtree Plaza (downtown), and Rathburns are all good choices. Rathburns is in a "transitional" part of town and while it will look a little scary its really not. Also, Rathburns is very popular and the atmosphere is not what I would call intimate.

If it were me, I would try to get a table at City Grille close to the window with a view. It's unique and the food is excellent.

The Palm is another excellent choice and if you really want to wow her the Ritz Dining room will more than take care of you.

Good Luck!

Easy. Rathbun's

The food there is awesome (not cheap but worth it). It's considered modern American. Food critic's rate it as one of the top restaurants in ATL, and I'd have too agree. I'm not sure if you can get reservations on short notice. The time's I've been, I've called a month in advance.
Bingo.

If you want steak, go to his steak place (creatively named "Kevin Rathbun Steak"). But good luck getting a res at either of his places now. But beware - both places are loud and not romantic.

Also, a nice thing would be The Atlanta Grill at the Ritz Carlton downtown. Not nearly as expensive as it sounds. Ask for The Cheaters Booth - it's a corner booth with a big thick velvet curtain - has an heavy air of romance. Also it's not widely known so it doesn't get too awfully crowded.

For phenomenal food, I'd go with Bacchanalia. Best food in town, bar none. Just named to the top of the Zagat list for the umpteenth year in a row. Same price tier as Rathbuns but more romantic. If money's NO object you could go with their ultra-chic and ultra-quiet (and ultra-expensive) sister restaurant Quinones by Bacchanalia. (fyi - starprovisions.com)

I'd stick with the romantic places - and stay out of Buckhead. My wife (who is with me now) also thinks Bacchanalia. Good luck!!!

Bones is good, I agree--best steakhouse in ATL

Rathbun's is good, I agree--not been to his steakhouse

Canoe is good, not great, but an awesome scene there on the river, could be a good proposal spot (btw you should have put more thought into this :D)

Restaurant Eugene is good

Bacchanalia and Floataway Cafe are good

Highly recommended!!

And congrats 711!!!
Emeril's has closed in Buckhead. Rusan's in Buckhead is great for Saki Bombs and Sushi, as well as the Atlanta Fish Market. By far the best type of seafood in the city. You could wow her on this weekend and go to Morton's-the Steakhouse or Fleming's near Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody. Asking a girl to marry you aside, I suggest going to STATS sometime while you are here. It is an amazing sports bar owned by 790 the Zone and even has beer taps at your own table and a rooftop bar overlooking the dome, city, etc...
