Gottfried has lost this group.

Well, I personally think the guy is an OK coach but I also think he is going to have to get a better MIX of players. Not just great INDIVIDUAL talent but great TEAM abilities. And for God's sake, a CONSISTENT 3 point shooter would be a great addition (back to that better MIX of players thing).

I was listening to "Hey Coach" a few weeks back and a caller asked CMG why he didn't try to go after many players around the country instead of just here in our back yard, hinting toward the TEAM players thing. He basically rattled off how great he was doing with the recruits he was getting right now, so why look anywhere else!?!? As long as he has that philosophy we will never be a NC basketball team. Look at the Duke's and the North Carolina's and the Florida's and the .... who have TEAM players and play consistent game in, game out. We don't have that and will never have GREAT teams with his narrow recruiting ideas!

My only hope is that MM handles the firing (if it comes to that) better than he did the Shula drop kick. We have to remember, even if we no longer desire their services, they will always be Alumni and I think they deserve the respect that comes with that!

And since you "watched" the game Saturday, who was on the bench the whole time....RS aka the only PG on the team thats knows the offense (thats the reason the half court offense was bad).

Torrence-good ball handler, no concept of our offense
Hollenger- bad ball handler
Tubbs- good athlete with a limited basketball mentality
Gee- no determenation, intensity, sense of urgency

I "watched" the game about 20 feet from the Alabama bench. Any team would likely have a dropoff after losing their star player, but isn't it the coaches job to have more than 1 point guard ready to go (especially 3 months into a season where everyone knew RS's health would be an issue).

Gottfried for Athletic Director!

Which of those guards that I mentioned earlier do you think would be ready to go. Keep in mind they are all under classmen. He plays Hollenger a lot and he's just not that good yet, Gee plays with no intensity, and Tubbs has yet to find his place in the offense.

All I have to say is, after losing to Auburn 5 in a row in football and getting swept this year in B-ball....I am glad i do not currently reside in Alabama. :biggrin2:

Of course there is reason to get "blood thirsty", its Alabama fans . No one is going to call the Bama Nation reasonable any time soon.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this....but here it goes anyway. Check the schedule, we are 3-0 against LSU and UK this year. It's hard to believe we could beat them with our uninspired team and horrible coach. I really do wish that we could compete with them. What does that say about Tubby and Brady? sigh

Prior to this year, we had won 7 in a row against Tennessee and 8 in a row against Auburn. That didn't just happen.

Having said that, I'm not happy about this team's performance. It seems like a lack of effort, and that disturbs me. But it isn't a reason to get blood thirsty and fire your coach of 9 years. It's time for an attitude adjustment for our team and our fans, but I think we should give CMG a chance to do it.

The article in the paper today, quoting CMG as saying he's had to go back to 10/15 fundamentals with the team certainly seems to make this thread aptly named...

I wonder if UAB starts shooting the lights out (and they WILL with Mike Davis within the next few years) if Bama starts to become a little more critical in assessing Gottried.

Getting the team to the tourney every year, as was mentioned earlier, not the best gauge of success. Every year we hear the hype around recruiting, but it just never seems to equate to a consistent powerhouse. By the end of last year we only had something like 7 scholarship players on the team? How does that happen?

Before Billy Donovan, what was Florida in basketball? Now, they lose to Vandy and 5,000 people storm the court.

Okay, so this year, as everyone is saying, Bama is young, overcoming some obstacles and injuries, etc. Does that make next season the true measuring stick?

Now they are saying Bama is young, funny the first of the year Bama was named as one of the teams to make the Final Four by various sportscasters; and yes those at ESPN too. Yes we are young, with three returning starters and one senior. We have slowly deteriorated, we have not got better. Alright I know that Steele is hurt, but he got hurt early, think the Notre Dame game; that is when you find someone who can hopefully fill his shoes on games that should be givens; and there were not that many of those. You can't put all your eggs in one basket. Other teams finds ways to win without their starters, I just don't know why Bama can't. Only one thing I figure. Sorry, I was at the game Saturday and had to hear that AU war cry.....just venting...........:(

CMG has always been a decent coach, but a great recruiter. He has know gone from decent, to alright and in decline. If he can not come up with a better offense than Torrence dribble and try to create then he needs to go coach high school AAU ball. CMG better step it up or he won't be there.

Gee playing with no intensity and Tubbs not finding his place in the offense is a direct reflection of the coaching staff. It's their job to have these guys prepared and if nothing else playing hard. I know Tubbs hasn't played a lot, but again that goes back to the coaching staff not using him during the 14 game non-conference schedule.

I guess I understand a little about what's happening. This is a very young team with a very inexperienced bench. Your point guard/quarterback is hurt, your only senior has dealt with more in the last four months than most of us will in four years, and your lineups now consist of underclassmen who haven't had the privelege of playing together very much. I can see where inconsistency is a concern. I cannot excuse the poor defense. I used to get excited when they would go to the 2-3 zone, but now I cringe because after two passes someone is left wide open on the wing and they ALWAYS drain the three. It gets old. I also noticed that the high-low play between Davidson and Hendrix has worked EVERY SINGLE TIME, but they only do it once a game. As much as I want perfection for Bama, I know that it doesn't matter who the coach is, it will never be achieved. We're down on CMG right now, but it could be worse. We could still have David Hobbs.

dang, i'm so tired of hearing "but we could still have hobbs". with shula, we didn't say "at least we don't have whitworth". we went out and got saban in football. i'm not saying we are going to get a world class coach, don't get me wrong, i would just at least like another wimp.

This calling for CMG's head is idiotic. The man has brought the program out of the depths in about 6 years and now we should be able to recruit against UNC, Duke and UK? Between everything that has happened since he has been here (when was the last time our star player stayed for all 4 years or even three outside of Erwin Dudley?) we are not in terrible shape. Do I think that there has to be some assistant changes? Probably. But come on...CMG has done more for this program that we could possibly imagine. Even when Wimp was here Bama basketball was never mentioned or argued about as much. Think about this year and then realize the fact that Steele probably hasn't been even 50% all year, JD is playing like he is 6'4 and then the other three "starters" are all off and on. Hendrix won't play if he is challenged early (see both ARK and ND game) Riley can't play D and then you have guys who if they are on are role players nothing more. I think we all need to just calm down and realize this team hasn't been good all year long. CMG can only preach defense so long before he loses his voice.

I believe two events must happen before Bama basketball will become a power. First, CMG must be replaced. I would get Texas A&M’s coach. Second, the administration must change the seating arrangement so the students surround the court instead of being hidden in the corner. Otherwise, we can expect the same results every year...struggle to get to the tourney and then lose in the first or second round.

You raise an excellent point. When WAS the last time a player stayed all four years? Come to think of it, when was the last time an Alabama player was picked in the NBA draft?? Many never really stick around for long, and most certainly don't go pro. So what happens to all of these great recruits?

Ok i've read through this thread and i agree with a lot of points made here for sure! A) I'm glad I don't live in Alabama right now B) This team seems to lack a true floor leader C) I don't think CMG will lose his job although I didn't think Shula would either.

That said, CMG needs to can a few assistants and bring in some guys who can pick up his slack in areas where he fails to connect with his players a la RahRah and TR Dunn. Recruit a few more gritty, passionate kids like Pettway. Like HSV said, the Shula comparison is completely off base because that situation behind the scenes pales in comparison. Gottfried likely has the support of Witt because he has graduated a lot of kids as well as a decent on court past by showing signs of greatness (SEC Title, Elite 8). I expect he will be retained regardless of what happens from here on out but if a change is made i fully support T.R. Dunn as the replacement. Alum, Proven knowledge of the game, and someone who would come home for the job in a second.

Yeah. Who else is there? He did run off 14 in a row.

mike anderson...mike anderson....mike anderson....mike anderson....mike anderson...and did i mention, mike anderson? the answer is staring Mal right in the face. anderson would crawl to Tuscaloosa. no brainer. up tempo, hard nosed style, gets results. get it done Mal!!! there's no reason we can't have a top notch coach. mike anderson............Roll Tide Roll Mikey baby!!!

Let me first say that I agree that TAM's coach would be a definite upgrade coaching wise over CMG. We have the same problems every year with his teams. They play soft defense, they lose on the road and they stand around on offense. I have been complaining about this for years. This is a trend not an aberation (sp?).

However, if you think that it is where the students sit that keeps us from being a powerhouse. I believe you are sadly mistaken. It would be nice to have them surrounding the court but that does not make a bit of difference if you are going to be a great team or not.

I don't know if you could get Mike Anderson after only one year at MO. That would be a tremendous hire. We have the athletes to run his offense and defense. One thing that has been terribly frustrating to me is that we put no pressure on people. We have great athletes (look at Tubbs and Torrence). We could press all day long if we choose to, but we don't. I know RS is hurting. Take him out when we want to pressure full court.

Sorry for the length.
