Either You Did or You Didn’t

Webster says, “an excuse is an attempt to lessen the blame attached to a fault or offense; seeking to defend or justify your actions or inaction." But in the end, excuses only satisfy those who use them.
If you know me well or you were a teammate or a player on a team that I coached. You know that I have a low tolerance for people with excuses. I’m a either you did, or you didn’t kind of person. I’m not particularly interested in the reason why.
Making excuses usually lead to sin. The reasons for not going to church. Not giving to someone. Exercising. Bad eating habit are not big enough to justify not doing, so people will lie just to make their excuse sound justifiable. We should take heed of Matthew 5:37, “Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”
When we condition ourselves into believing that making excuses is good for us, we will always try to escape when things get tough. Successful people are so busy getting things done that they don’t have time to make excuses. Once you stop giving excuses, you start giving results.
It all boils down to, “If you really want to do it, you do it. There are no excuses.”

It’s On You

I recently read a quote that said, "A sign of wisdom and maturity is when you come to terms with the realization that your decisions cause your rewards and consequences. You are responsible for your life, and your ultimate success depends on the choices you make."
As faith would have it, I had a chance to use it as a teaching moment with my girls. My college senior Sydney’s change of plans without notifying Tanja or I, left her alone and afraid on the interstate with a flat tire. All of the who, how, when and where become extremely important at 1am.
As I told my inbound college freshman Ariel. It was difficult to gather this information through the tears on the other end of the phone. “This is why we ask all of the questions before you leave the house.” Nothing is as painful as not knowing where your child is…” “I am and will be responsible for you until the day you’re grown, gone and able to take care of yourself.”
And with that Ariel’s response was, “Well, you have a lot of people that you’re responsible for.” It felt good that she recognized my responsibilities. But unfortunately, I know many of us try to avoid our responsibilities. We want to blame others for our problems: Our parents did not raise us well; our friends let us down; our children are rebellious; our employer is not sensitive enough; our spouse is not understanding; there is not enough time in the day … the excuses are plentiful!
Even Adam and Eve did everything they could to avoid taking responsibility for their sin. Adam blamed his wife: “She gave me of the tree.” He even pointed an accusing finger at God, saying it was “the woman, whom You gave me.” Eve blamed the serpent, saying: “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” God ignored their excuses and announced the judgment they would face as consequences for their disobedience.
Yet forgiveness and restoration cannot happen until we accept full responsibility for our actions. An obvious indication that we have not genuinely repented is that we make excuses for our behavior. Nowhere in Scripture does God excuse one person’s sin because of someone else’s actions. God will hold us accountable for our own actions, not others (2 Cor. 5:10). It’s only when you take responsibility for your life, that you discover how truly powerful you truly are.

Don’t Be A Big Dummy
Last night I received a text from a friend that wanted to help me with a situation. Her family has done so much for me over these last 8 years that I tired to decline their help. But after my wife reminded me of the “Parable of the Drowning Man” to which I pretended not to know about.
So, she said, “There was once a drowning man. A boat came by and tried to save him, but he said "no thank you, God will save me." In time, two more boats come along and tried to save him but he said "no thank you, God will save me" and he drowned. When he got to heaven he said "why didn't you save me God?" and God said "I sent you three boats you big dummy!"
There are different ways you may block your blessings, such as unforgiveness. Un-forgiveness is the most common problem face. How many times ought we to forgive? Limitless, as Matthew 18:21-22 tells us, “Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.”
Another is stop giving to God your time, your talents or your tithes. Just as Malachi 3:8-10 ask the question, “Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you ask, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes, offerings and other contributions… Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” I will open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”
But this is where I fall short. My wife was trying to get me to see that it was not about. And that I’m blocking their offering or contribution. Just because I don’t readily accept compliments, gifts or offers of help without putting up a defense, unless it’s my birthday, Christmas, or Fathers Day. I’m blocking their blessings. Genesis 12:3a is clear, “I will bless those who bless you.
I hate it when my wife is right. “ You Big Dummy
