I'm leaving soon for Basic...

About 100 years ago I was a Drill Sergeant in the Army. Here's is how to survive basic training--Do as you are told---Do say you are told--and daminit---Do as you are told...Good luck.
Very good advice. I might add; while in basic training, do everything possible to just "blend in" and never do anything to bring attention to yourself. Doing otherwise will make things unpleasant. Drill sergeants don't care what you already know; it is there job to erase everything and completely retrain you from scratch. There will be a couple of guys in your platoon that will make mistakes and they will be compelled to perform extra duty. You don't want to be one of them. Just stay low key, do what you are told, and you will slide through with no problem.

Will do Sergeant!
Yesterday, my recruiter administered my final PT test before Basic. I maxed out my push-ups. Woo-hoo! I scored 232. Not bad for a 33 yr old who hasn't even been through Basic yet.
Make sure to make your Drill Sergeant aware of your prowess at push-ups at the first available opportunity. ;)

Unless things have changed....

They'll know you're going to OCS afterwards. That equals not blending in. The first words directed to me by a Drill Sergeant, from about an inch away from my ear were, "College graduate, huh? You know you're ........, don't you?"

Don't be the one making mistakes, true. Be prepared to be punished for the mistakes of others. It's all part of the process.

"Hey go get some I D ten Tangoes from so and so" "Go and get an exhaust sample" "You need to change out the summer air with the winter air in the tires" Ah, messing with privates, the enlisted and butter bars, is so much fun. :)

Seriously though, good luck and welcome to the ranks!

This might not be the thread to say this but since BB is leaving, I thought this is as good a place to say this as any. I would like to take this time to thank my brothers and sisters in arms; past, present and future for their sacrifices and their devought devotion to duty, honor and country as well as those that support them. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day. May God Bless You.

So true Willy. This Memorial Day has a different feel for me. I guess I'm more aware of the military and those who have sacrificed for this country.
BTW, my last post(for a while) will be sometime tomorrow. My recruiter is driving me up to MEPS tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm.

They changed up on me. I was initially meant to goto Benning for Basic. I got on the bus to goto MEPS and they told me I was going to Leonardwood. I got to MEPS and they told me I was headed to Ft Sill. SO, I got to spend some time in Oklahoma. I'm at Benning now though.

Sounds right. Remove all doubt about it right from the beginning. You're in the Army now. Carry on, I'll be in the area all day. :cool2:

I'll be there and OCS is right next door to us. Look for me at Airborne School I'll be the one in the Blackhat making you do push ups.
Bamabrass, get used to the idea of pushing Ft. Benning a few push-ups closer to sea level, especially after identifying yourself to a Blackhat.
While you're at it, go ahead and get jump wings tatooed on your chest before Airborne School. The Instructors really dig that.
In all seriousness, thanks and good luck.

Oh man I love those guys. The most common are the ones who get them on there forearms. Then at 0430 Monday morning when they're getting ready to do pushups for the PT test one of the Blackhats spots it and its like a pack of piranhas. Talk about having a bulleyes on you for three weeks, try that out and see where it gets you.
