Immigration/Border Security Policy Thread

Ah....now I know why there are so many rooting against the USA Women's soccer team in their match with Sweden early Sunday morning.....

(no blue font) ;)
Between the mid-1800s and mid 1900s, millions of Swedes and Norwegians, with a smaller contingent of Danes, migrated to the US, mostly to the upper Midwest. There are almost 10 million people of Scandinavian descent in the US. The population of Sweden is around 10 million. So, I misspoke, since only about half of our are strictly Swedish, with the others being Norwegian and a smaller number of Danish. I really doubt that many are really pulling for Sweden, although a US loss may sting a little less. My own ancestry tests to be 50% English and 50% Scandinavian...

There are more people here of Swedish descent than in all Sweden...
Living in Wisconsin all those years where practically everyone is a European immigrant I can appreciate that. The rural landscape is filled with dairy farms with structures built in Scandinavian architecture. I found it to be a very welcoming society compared to my experiences in small towns in the deep south.

In Europe, I've found the Scandinavians more welcoming than, for example, the Germans and especially the French. Practically all signage in Norway is bilingual, in English and Norsk. Each time I've visited Norway, I've ended up having to translate for German tourists, same for Denmark. Since I don't have a discernible accent in German, they think they've finally run into a Norwegian who speaks good German.* The last trip, staying in a hotel in the little hamlet of Lom, Norway so as to be near the national park, the excellent little stave church and with easy driving distance of a couple more, as we passed through the lobby and there was a German family there, very unhappy with their accommodations. The desk clerks spoke only Norsk and English. The Germans were using the traditional tactic of speaking louder and louder. Outside, my wife asked why I hadn't volunteered to interpret. I just said that I wasn't getting in the middle of that. They would have been even madder if they'd known what the clerks were saying...

*I once was accused by a German tour bus driver of probably being a spy - in Yellowstone NP...

I was a pen pal of a Norwegian girl while in high school. I still have her letters and a photo of her somewhere. Earle is right - they are quite friendly! :)
I have one now. Our communication is a mixture of Norwegian and English. She's from Vestlandet, west of Bergen, where they speak Nynorsk, instead of the Danish-influenced Bokmål of the east, so I've had to learn a lot of new vocabulary, although all of the Nynorsk speakers also understand Bokmål, since it's the language of the media, etc...

We actually wrote letters to each other back then. "Snail mail". I'll try to find them and share them if I do - maybe you can help translate them for me.

Will be interesting to see if she wrote in Nynorsk or Bokmål.

Do you know what part of Norway she was from. That alone almost dictates which dialect she spoke, although she may have spoken Nynorsk every day and written in Bokmål...

This have anything to do with it?

Less than 24 hours after the US women’s national team suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of their longtime nemesis Sweden in the second round of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Donald Trump gloated about the team’s elimination on social media.

The former president, a longtime vocal critic of the team, specifically Megan Rapinoe, a blue-haired talisman and outspoken LGBTQ+ advocate who missed a crucial penalty during the final moments of the game, said that the team’s loss is “fully emblematic of what is happening to our great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden”.

“Many of our players were openly hostile to America — no other country behaved in such a manner, or even close,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “WOKE EQUALS FAILURE. Nice shot, Megan, the U.S. is going to Hell!!! MAGA

I don't think it's ever a good idea to mix politics with sports.

Did you ever wonder why Tidefans doesn't allow politics in it's sports forums?

There is a reason and while not apples to apples with our topic today - it ends with the same result.

A lot of disgusted fans and supporters.

Does not matter who is right and who is wrong.

It's just a bad idea.

And you don't have to take my word for it. Just read the comments on all the YT videos - many comments coming from folks outside the US - condemning the players who behaved the way they did during the anthem.

And it wasn't just that either. Rapinoe laughing after missing her PK. What if it were a Bama kicker who laughed after missing a FG? And then Bama loses the game. A playoff game, no less.

I mean....who does that?

You seemed perplexed so I offer a potential answer.

ETA: I don't watch much futball.
