Link: Interesting article about Cristobal...

Great read. I was also surprised when FIU fired him. After reading this, I'm more impressed with his work. Practicing on intramural fields to a conference championship? One losing season after back to back bowl games is not a good reason to terminate the coach who built your program. Oh well. Their loss is our gain.

He sounds like a great hire and someone who may match the intensity of CNS. I like someone who will walk the walk with the team. What a boost to our Florida recruiting, too.

Excellent article Earle, thanks. Leave it up to CNS to always replace a coach or player with someone equal to or better than the person he is replacing.

He may not be here long. His talent with young people & coaching abilities will make him a targeted coach especially being on CNS staff will give the kind of exposure he has not had before, even as a HC.

Took some years to get used to hearing from anyone on that 92 Canes team because they talked so much before our game. But, I like Gino & Mario. I think we are going to have to get ready for more & more coaches to get Big Jobs after working for CNS. Truth be known he may be making more money at the Capstone, just a guess, but I am sure glad we have him now.

I've come to realize this with all our coaches. Turnover, which I thought was over, seems to gut us a little but CNS has such a great eye for talent that it doesn't keep me worried. Glad to have him.

Very impressive guy. I suspect he'll do quite well at Alabama, but I don't think he'll be around more than 2-3 years. And I do think some Division I school will come a-calling to offer him the HC job.

This sounds like a good hire for us. Hopefully our OL will benefit from Mario's experience and enthusiasum. This should also help with our recruiting in athlete-rich South Florida. One thing I disagreed with in the article was that Miami dominated us in the 1989 Sugar Bowl. Miami certainly had an outstanding team, but they benefitted from a couple of phantom fumble non-calls that would have changed the game complection considerablly. Even at that, we only lost by eight (33-25) and moved the ball consistently in Homer Smith's offense.

Thanks Earle. I was happy with the hire when I first heard. Now that's elevated to excitement. Sadly for us fans but great for him we'll once again see another great hire be courted for an upgrade in the near future. Great thing is that even though we have the turnover CNS can always exhibit his consistent coach hiring prowess to recruits for years to come.

RTR!!!

Nice read. Thanks for posting, Earle. Certainly gives some more insight into the man behind the name and face. The thing that impresses me the most is his perceived coaching acumen and that he was not just hired as a 'recruiter'. No offense against Pendry or Stoutland, because they certainly did great jobs with our O-line, but I'm glad we got a younger coach this time that seems to have a lot of energy and enthusiasm. I can easily see this guy barking his lungs out on the practice field and literally showing our guys 'how it's done'. I'm fired up about this hire!

with this rate, soon we will see former NFL head coaches asking Saban to work for him as an Assistant coach... for free. Just to get the experience and upgrade their resume.

Bama would have won that game had instant replay been in effect then. That game is the reason I went to NO in 1992, fully confident that Bama would win. The 1989 Miami team was much better that the 1992 Miami team. Likewise, the 1992 Bama team was much better than the 1989 Bama team. Therefore, if in reality, the lesser 1989 Bama team had beaten the better 1989 Miami team, then it was a 'no brainer' that the better 1992 Bama team would beat the lesser 1992 Miami team.
