.... is another LB still listed as unsigned . Does anyone know what the reason is for Cragin still not being signed ? Grades ?

But after reviewing Rivals' details, one wonders if he hasn't fallen between the cracks. He ran a 4.5 40-yarder at the Alabama camp, and a 4.44 at Florida (twice in a row on a wet field). Maybe the lack of a highlights film is part of the reason for a two-star rating??? Rivals information on him also is pretty skimpy, including no stats on his previous games.

Just come and walk on............

This is an easy thought........but...

$$$$$.......yes.......that is ...money, money money.

Out of state tuition is not doable for most kids.

From what I can see he appears to be strong in tackling and fast enough to get wide in stopping runs. He defended couple of passes and intercepted one. On kickoffs, he seemed first down the field to make hits. Not too shabby. But, as Coach Saban noted, highlight films show your good side. Bad plays are omitted.

I know this kid and family well, so am stating facts here:

Josh Cragin does NOT have grade/discipline/drugs/aclohol/legal/character issues.
He has been done "not right" by coaches. He had lots of schools interested in him that recruited him hard. The first problem was he didn't have footage to send out, and "the powers that be" at school, NEVER sent out his footage. That was a huge problem for those kids at that school. Jr. footage never sent although having been requested by many schools on many different occasions.
Same with senior footage, for some reason it was a problem to come by getting footage from the "powers that be".
He and his mom had to get whatever camcorder footage they could find, as well as film from some opposing teams also to make highlights and send out finally in Nov.
The second problem, was schools were being turned away, being told he was a lock to Bama, and lots of phone calls (from colleges)were ignored and most not returned, again, not by Josh; schools were contacting his "powers that be" at his school. They are now finding out from several recruiting writers that have been researching what has been happening. This weekend they were told Josh had 4 offers early on, that were not conveyed to him or his family.

*FWIW, there is another big time player across town, the same thing has been happening to. These kids are good kids, well liked, hard working, qualifying Student-Athletes. I can't even imagine how much worse it could be had the "powers that be" not liked these kids!

Josh did have recent offers from D1AA schools, as well as Air Force Academy, and Coach Saban has asked him to walk on, as well as UGA...however finances are a problem, as yes he is a FL resident. He still has interest from Nebraska as well.
They are seriously considering doing the JUCO thing as a "qualfier" already, as he won't have to be there I think they said 3 semesters.
Josh is D1 talent no question, and will be there eventually. He was Bama bound more than anything, so maybe after 1 yr of JUCO if he indeed goes that route, CNS will offer, if not, he wants in the SEC anyway.
He was getting his "official" Bama offer on his visit, by the previous staff. The new staff called to confirm his visit, and the week before, wanted to push it back. Ultimately, it didn't happen.

I only post what I know to be fact.

I hope things work out for him. I hate to see guys fall through the cracks for reasons not of their own doing.

I hate to hear all of that. I hope it all works out for the best for Josh and his family. Keep us advised on his situation please.

I'm sorry, but I have a hard time buying this story. He has been listed on both rivals and scout. I'm wondering if he attended any summer camps or jr. days. He might be a kid that fell through the cracks, but I have a hard time with his coaches not trying to help him or intentionally hurting his chances of getting a schollie. To be honest, every kid a HS coach gets a D1 schollie helps the HS coaches resume.

Drjameson,
Trust me, it happens. I can tell you about my cousin who set several records at QB but our high school coach would do nothing to get him a scholarship. He had letters from many schools but our coach would not give any support and with the exception of some Div II schools, all interst went away.
I can also tell you about one of my close friends who played ball with me under the same coach just two years behind my cousin. He had the same situation happen to him. He had dreamed of playing at Alabama all of his life and was determined to play for Bama. Well, our coach did nothing to help him and Willis and I ended up joining the Navy out of high school. Willis trained everyday to keep himself in football shape and after four years of the Navy walked on to Alabama. He ended up earning a scholarship and in his senior year won the national title by beating Miami. He was a favorite of Coach Stallings and was one of Coach Stallings leaders. Willis Bevelle is the player and you can look him up if you would like. He won the Most improved D-back in 1989, The Jerry Duncan "I like to Practice Award, and the Charlie Compton Award while at Alabama. He also made a play that saved our 1992 Championship hopes when he recovered a fumble in the 4th against Missippi State.

It happens because it happened to me. My High School coach did not push anyone and we had some really good ball players to include me. I was asked to transfer many times by many other coaches because they knew I would not get my fair shake with my HS coach---(once after playing in the region championship game(my JR year) and against the meanest coach in the region I scored 11 points in the last 4 minutes of the game--but after all had left the locker room that mean SOB actually wanted to know if I would transfer the next year to his school--I should have!). I didnt transfer as I thought it would work out and I wanted to stay with my friends and teammates. Well my senior year a couple guys got JUCO offers in town because of there grades and of course they were not pushed by our HS coach. I found out too late that I had gotten letters sent to him for me and he never gave them to me--another player too. My teammates parents(well established people) tried late to push my name out there but it was too late. It was so bad that one saturday I was at a store and my high school coach walked up to me and said " You should be down at South Alabama for a visit" he had not even told me that USA had called and wanted me to visit--so of course that made me look bad as he told them I was coming. HE NEVER told me. He did the same thing to another player too. Of course we were screwed after that. I was on the short list at Walker College for their last schollie, but it was given to another player whose brother was the starting point guard at UAB at the time,,,funny thing that guy never played a minute at Walker because he got into trouble--or never made it in school. I also visited small Lambuth College in Tennessee and hated it plus it was DIV III with no schollies. So I did the thing I wanted to do---I went to BAMA as a student and thought about walking on for Wimp, Wimp told me he didnt have room for another walkon but try back the following year--I didnt of course and my time for playing was saved for the REC league and HARCO drug (my part time warehouse gig while at UA--along with several other jobs) company basketball team for the Tuscaloosa city league. That HS coach actually made a difference in me not going to school for free.

Oh, it is true, but he isn't the only one either, although the only 1 that is a D1 recruit from his school. There are a couple other kids that would play in 1AA and 2, but he has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for ANY of them.
There is another coach in town from a rival HS that has not told his star RB that he had offers back in Nov from UAB, Samford, S. Miss and even Vandy!
These are facts.
It does happen, and logically of course we think a coach should do anything and everything to get a player to ANY college, that would be feathers in his cap. But some coaches in this area are known in the recruiting circle as lazy POS. Sorry, this is from some college coaches as well as some Rivals writers. It is unfortunate, but it does happen.

Case in point; there have been a couple of "unsigned players" combines in Tallahassee and Pensacola. He has not told one single kid about it or even given them the form required!! You would think he wants to get anyone signed anywhere, but it isn't the case.

This years upcoming seniors from Choctaw have it made though, rest assured. Josh and his mom sent out so many DVD's of this past season to so many schools, these kids have already been looked at. Josh didn't have any jr. year footage sent at all. His mom didn't have any, and couldn't get it from the coach
Josh's mom felt bad for the kids behind Josh, and sent out jr rosters along with game footage to the recruiting sites, so that they can already get a look.

I say all this, and the coach actually likes Josh, but I have also seen what happens to the kids he doesn't like...he didn't play them this year, their senior yr.

I have a son who will be in HS in a couple years, I can tell you he won't go to that school, although zoned for it, specifically for those reasons. Not just football, but the whole athletics dept. needs a makeover, as well as the prinicipal. I am not the only one either.
