Video: Let's be real about Tua (a look at his career)

He is. And I hate seeing him get denigrated by all of these “experts” online. He’s a generational talent who suffered massive injuries that would have completely ended most careers.

He led the League in a lot of passing stats in ‘22 and led the League in Passing Yards in ‘23 and Comp % in ‘24.

His mobility and some of his power on throws was limited by that MSU injury.

He’s had only god knows how many major concussions.

Yet as mentioned he’s played at a High level still at various points.

If he had never been injured I think he could have been a Top 5 NFL QB in the right system for the right team and if they taught him how to protect himself and if he listened.

A lot of ifs I know.

But Tua is by far the most talented QB that started for Bama.

He was ready to start the second he arrived on Campus.

His ability to throw WRs open and hit guys in stride with such precision was unmatched.

His snap to throw time and release was unmatched.

Mac Jones is the only other Bama QB in Tua’s stratosphere.

All that said I wish Tua would retire.

I’m pretty convinced he’s going to have a life like Muhammad Ali post career.

Letting Tua play on the drive at Mississippi State was the worst decision at Alabama during the CNS tenure. He hasn’t and will never be the same.

Yes... He should have been on the sidelines or at the very least should not have sought out contact. Slide or just throw it away. I think that same issue serves him poorly in the NFL.

Teams that unloaded their coach (Auburn... PSU...) are doing well today. Hope Bama doesn't assume LSU players will be in a funk and not take them seriously. As for the score... I'll be happy with a win.

Bo and Tua didn't have the same injury. Bo eventually developed avascular necrosis of the ball of his femur. IOW, it died. No hip replacement ever completely mimics a normal hip. Tua's injury was a dislocation, fracturing the rear of hip socket, knocking a piece of bone off. I've had a similar injury, except I only had a crack. That hip is due to be replaced in December, on my birthday. I didn't have necrosis, but the ball is worn flat on the hip side. The other hip had to be replaced first, about ten years ago...

In 10 games this season, Tua has completed 68.2 percent of his passes for 1,952 yards with 17 touchdowns and a league-leading 13 interceptions.

despite winning 2 of their last 3 games, those stats are terrible by any standards.

I love Tua, but he couldn't hold a candle to Marino. Miami would love to have Dan back in a heartbeat.
I saw the post game interview from Tua discussing the Ravens loss, he said the visiting fans affected his performance! I have heard some outrageous claims for defeats, but this one really takes the cake. Tua should really ask himself what's really going on his lackluster and inconsistent performance from one week to the next. on a sidenote, he should be more concerned about his play than getting a different hairdo and more tattoos each week.
Not to crush Tua, but I always preferred Jalen Hurts over him and wish we'd kept Hurts for 2019. Imo, Tua did well because Georgia never prepared for him (Kirby admits this). The next season in '18 and again in '19 he did great against middle and lesser teams but when a team had a defense with a heartbeat like Georgia did again in 2018, he wasn't nearly as effective. Anyhoo. There's just something I've never been sold 100% on with Tua like I was with Hurts.

So you say 6yrs after the fact, lol. You say Tua only had success against Georgia because they didn’t prep for him, then shut him down in 2018 only to be saved by Hurts…..but won’t apply the same standard to Hurts in the SECC apparently. Hurts in 2017 was a predictable one read guy who always ran out of the pocket to the right and would step OOB for a 5yd loss instead of throw it away, repeatedly. He was ineffective.

Tua “struggled” with good defenses the same as any other QB struggled. The only defense that truly shut him down was Clemson, and it turns out they were just reading our plays.

Sorry but I just don’t buy this “I was never a Tua guy” line.

We need a mic drop choice!!! 🎤💥

We all love Jalen on this board, but he was not as good as Tua , Mac or Bryce at bama…period. He got better his last year at Oklahoma and of course continued to mature in the pros. It should be noted, he has a great O line, receivers and running backs at Philly…kinda like Mac his last year at bama. That helps a qb a LOT!
You forgot to add that playing offense in the Big 12 was like playing against air. The defenses were non existent and it was basically basketball on grass. If Jalen had come back the following year, Bama would’ve lost Tua. One of them was going to transfer regardless, and it just so happened to work out for Jalen.

What many overlook is that season sitting behind Tua was greatly beneficial to Jalen. Dan Enos, while being jerk and terrible OC at other stops, is a very good QB coach. He helped get Hurts into better form BEFORE he left for Oklahoma. Yeah he got better there but much of his improvement can be credited to Enos.

I really don't care if you buy it or not. Loved that Tua won the NC for us in 2017 but even in 2018, I would have rather Hurts be QB, I just felt like at his core he was more of a winner than Tua was. Honest to God truth whether you believe it or not. Just my preference then and if had to do it over now, it would still be my preference.

You a minority of one or close to it. Also, the Bama coaches and the WRs were about to mutiny against CNS if Tua was not given the reins.

You are the only coach, player or fan I’ve ever heard of who preferred Jalen over Tua. At that time Tua was in a different stratosphere than Jalen in terms of passing and to his credit Jalen agreed. I’m personally, along with the rest of the fan base, so glad that things have worked out so well for Jalen but he would have been the backup again in 2019 and rightfully so.

It’s primarily injuries that have derailed Tua’s career. He has persevered admirably, most would have already retired - and maybe wisely so.

And why is Hurts “at his core more of a winner” than Tua?

I mean Tua quite literally put his body on the line to win games. It’s why he is at where he is now.

So what made Jalen “more of a winner?” It’s one thing if you want to try to argue that Jalen had more potential or something and pointed to some evidence. But you are kinda slagging off Tua to prop up Hurts. What backs it up?

I love Jalen and Tua and am very glad how successful Jalen has been. But he simply was not ready to fully lead the offense and got fed to the wolves by starting so early. But I’m not going to say that Jalen just wasn’t enough of a “winner.”

One being more of a winner than the other is hogwash.

Objectively these are the numbers.

Jalen 26-2

Tua 22-2

They both get credited with Championship Wins that the other actually pulled off.

Tua saved Jalen vs UGA for the NC

Jalen then saved Tua vs UGA for the SECC

Jalen took the loss in 1 NCG vs Clemson

Tua took the loss in 1 NCG vs Clemson

Both ended their careers as Heisman Runner Ups and each was SEC Offensive POTY.

Hurts was a Freshman AA and Tua was a Consensus AA.

They had phenomenal careers overall with similar highs and similar lows regardless of the why’s of it.

I agree that in college Tua was on another level than Hurts. And I'd say that even with Hurt's senior year at OU (because of the defenses he faced in the Big 12).

I think the difference NOW is that Hurts is on a much better team with a much better OL and, to his credit, he's learned how to read defenses pre AND post snap.

Tua was in a league of his own at pre-snap reads in college. However, I'm not sure Tua has ever learned the art of POST snap reads in the NFL to the level Jalen has. But in his defense also, Tua has never played behind a Fin's OL that gave him much time to do so!

It was the right m9ve tl
The issue in the 2018 season was Mike Locksley's play calling. By the end of the season, it was too predictable and it killed us vs. Clemson. It was NOT a Tua issue,
It was the right move to pull Jalen in the 2017 NC. Tua should have been pulled in the 2018 NC for Jalen. They were onto Tua tendencies and bum ankles. Jalen would have carved them up with his running. We should never have allowed that game to ge to 48-14 without making a change much earlier.
