Referring to Pendry or to Applewhite? Pendry's gameplan; Pendry's offense; CMA calling the plays - who's mediocre?
Applewhite is mediocre based on what he did this season. Besides being co-coordinator, he was also the QB coach. Anyone would be hard-pressed to argue JPW did not regress this year. That falls on Applewhite.

Playcalling wasn't as big a factor as execution by the QB. JPW did not look prepared at times and was a big reason we dropped four straight. JPW put in the time to prepare according to Saban and JPW also performed well last year. The difference: Applewhite.

I firmly believe we'll be no worse with MA's departure and likely will be better off.

Applewhite accepts Texas assistant coaching job
Major Applewhite, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Alabama for one season, has decided to return to Texas and agreed to join head coach Mack Brown’s staff.

The Tuscaloosa News has learned that Applewhite will become the Longhorn’s running backs coach, and will likely have an additional title while working closely with his mentor, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Greg Davis. Texas officials can’t announce his hiring until 5 p.m. Wednesday, and a press conference is expected to be called Thursday.

Although Alabama had no official comment regarding Applewhite’s departure, there’s a strong possibility that the Crimson Tide may not hire a new offensive coordinator, and instead hand the duties full-time to assistant head coach of offense/offensive line coach Joe Pendry, who handled the game-planning responsibilities this past season.

If so, the Crimson Tide would likely look either add a quarterbacks coach, or re-assign someone to that spot.

Guys (and ladies), I have to say that I'm very disappointed by the way some of us have reacted to CMA's departure. We're better than that.

Here's to hoping CNS gets his first choice as the new OC.

I don't think anyone at age 28 has enough experience to run an offense as to what we expected when CNS came in last year. And he wasn't the first choice anyway was he? Good luck CMA, whatever your endeavors are..

I'm sorry, I may get flamed for this but I don't care. If we don't go out and hire an experienced coordinator then this would be a big mistake. Pendry was not successful at the Texans, if fact they were better when he left. I fear if he becomes the coordinator we will slip back into shula ball.

To whoever blamed jpw's performance on applewhite, a qb can't be expected to do well when the oline doesn't block for him. which last time i checked was pendry's responsibility. As you will go back and see, the games jpw struggled were when he didn't have any blocking. Mike Shula was probably a better qb coach than applewhite though.

I think is very unfair to judger applewhite on this situation. I personally believe he was pushed out, but I could be wrong. I mean this is the second coach gone this season and no one is talking about middleton. I love how Nick Saban gets a free pass on this, maybe it was he who didn't honor the two year plan. I just don't believe that Applewhite would leave this university that he apparently loves so much after one year. I would imagine that this is one of his dream jobs.

Once again this is just me personally, but I could see this coming back to bite us in the butt big time. I could be wrong and probably will be, but you never know.

I can't say that I blame CMA. If he had to go through the season with "training wheels", where is the "trust"? I'm sure he did what was good for him and his family and his future. I believe that I would've done the same thing in his position. Except I wouldn't live in Texas!

Applewhite was not "pushed." Let me say that I've seen some stuff put up in this thread which are far below what I expect of Bama fans and members of this board. Any more of the same crap, and we'll start removing the crappers...

I think the major disappointment for me anyhow is he seemed to genuinely love The University of Alabama. Of course I had always expected him to move on at sometime just not so soon. I guess childhood love's just aren't enough to keep you around these days. I got spoiled by CJK I suppose.

I wasn't expecting any miracles from the offense this year, but I had hoped next year would be better.

Oh well I agree, Good luck Major.

"Alabama's a great place," Applewhite added. "As an athlete or anybody, you have goals and dreams, and one of mine growing up was to be a player or coach at The University of Alabama and I'm grateful for that opportunity. I can't thank Coach Saban and Coach (Mal) Moore (Alabama Athletic Director) enough for the chance they gave me. It's an honor to have worked for such a great coach, at such a special institution and in a great state like Alabama. The people of Tuscaloosa and Alabama were very good to me and my wife Julie. It will always be a memorable time in our lives. I learned so much and appreciate everything, but coming back to Texas was a dream come true, too."
Nice statement from a stand up guy. I wish we could have had the chance to see what he could do as "the" OC.

It's a new day in collegiate athletics and I can't help but believe we might as well get used to seeing coaches come and go every year. With CNS I think we'll see more than our fair share of assistants travel through the Capstone. I don't state this as bad or good, it is what it is, aight.

We aren't the only ones that had better get used to it. Fans of nearly every team at every level needs to get used to it because it is the current trend.
