Major Applewhite accepts UT job

I am puzzled as to why a HC w/the experience of CNS would even contemplate any sort of duel roles re:running the offense. I think most of us would say that things like that most often fail whether in fb or other aspects of live/business. I am also puzzled as to why CMA would even accept a job under those circumstances. Most people don't mind being accountable for their decisions but nobody I know what to be accountable for someone elses. His "rep" as an OC could have easily taken a hit in a system deemed unsuccssful. Especially painful when you didn't have the control to do what you felt might work better.

Basically, I'm puzzled. But hey lets move forward and roll the dice once again. ;)

Re: Applewhite Leaves: Why Should I Be Concerned?

I’m concerned because this development is IMO just another symptom of a more serious problem…a program that continues to be perceived as unstable and dysfunctional. Regarding CMA’s perceived (by some) shortcomings…I quote our illustrious and "right on" Mod TIDE-HSV regarding CMA mediocrity…"Pendry's gameplan; Pendry's offense; CMA calling the plays - who's mediocre". Good luck CMA…. think you made the right decision under circumstances, perceived from an involved alum/booster’s standpoint, as far less than sterling.

So because CMA isn't "Bill Walsh" we shouldn't be concerned? Why bother to state the obvious then? Your "stats", Big Easy, make a lot of assumptions that are not apparent in fact, at least to me. I'll give two quick and easy reasons why one should be somewhat concerned:
1. The 2007 season's offense was one by committee....Saban, Pendry, and Major. So if we're going to "hold accountable" let's hold all three accountable.CMA may well have "called" the predetermined plays-by-committee, but I'd bet he was not solely responsible for which plays made it to the game plan.2. As is oft said, the (fill in the blank) coach/qb/o line/defense/etc. gets far too much credit when things go well and far too much blame when it goes south. Is this the end of the world? Hardly. Is it a potential situation that can come back to haunt? You bet cha! Is it possible offense may always be a potential 'short suit' with CNS? Possibly. One cannot possibly look @ game plans executed @ Rice 2006 and Alabama 2007 and conclude the same person designed both! (I kept thinking (seeing some Rice games)-boy, if they just had some SEC talent, what would they be able to do?) Youth and SEC inexperience aside, 'another missed opportunity' is evident. Experiments are fine for lab work; they don't seem to work well in ICU. So let's hope CMA's departure puts an end to the "experimentation" stage.

Re: Applewhite Leaves: Why Should I Be Concerned?

Not concerned AT ALL. I never was a fan of his play calling or his QB coaching ability.
Enjoy Texas, it could be the end of the road.

This is my #1 concern. #2 is the possibility of loosing any good recruits.

Re: Applewhite Leaves: Why Should I Be Concerned?

I thought the board pretty much agreed over the last few years that the HC is responsible for everything associated w/the team? Works for me. Hope he fixes it.

I have to agree. If I was CMA, and my name was attached to this offense which went from anemic to disastrous, I'd be tempted to bail, too. I know that there were reasons (poor recruiting in previous years, installing a new system, mid-season suspensions of significant players, etc.), but folks doing the hiring in later years, when I eventually moved on, would not necessarily know these details. What they would see was an offense that, well, didn't exactly light up the scoreboard. If you want to attach my name to a product, I have to be in control of that product, because my reputation is effected by how it is perceived.
At any rate, I wish CMA well. I think he's a bright guy and will do well somewhere, maybe Austin will be that place.
Now, let's get Alabama to go out and hire an OC who will light up the scoreboard offensively.

My, are we loosing some recruits...............I am all in favor of loosing them if they are tied down somewhere:wink:.But we may lose some with decommits as the usual 1-2 every year for whatever reason. I always take every "verbal" commit with a grain of salt b/c committment means little to many these days.

Its the same thing where I work. Whatever is wrong, blame it on the guy who just left.

Here's a little story about 'the guy that just left'.

When Nikita Khrushchev was leaving office 'Back in the USSR', he wrote his successor two letters & left instructions "If you find yourself in a bad situation without good options, open the first letter". Letter #1 simply stated, "Blame me." His successor then began blaming everything wrong on Khrushchev & his old policies and it worked wonderously - for a while. Years later things were very grim again & the old excuse no longer held sway, so Brezhnev opened the second letter. The second letter simply stated, "Now write two letters." :)

The Statesman takes a little parting shot at Alabama.

Major’s got his major reasons
For those wondering why Major Applewhite would even consider giving up an offensive coordinator’s post at such a prestigious program like Alabama in the best football conference in the nation, don’t. He’s got his reasons.

I dont want to be a I told you so guy but the proof is in the BOL article in relation to the recruits. The only loss was the RB Dean out of texas and to me its no loss we have a stable of backs already.

In all actuality it helped us in the long run because AJ McCarron said it helped us not having him because he was more of a pocket passer and thats what he is.

Looking at the rest of the recruits it is plain and simple they came here for Nick Saban and the U of A not xcMA.

The best quote was from Square he said he wishes him good luck unless they face us and it was too bad he left because he is gonna miss out on the NC we are going to win... LOL.. sounds like he is all broken up about it..

I really hope we get the guy from Boise St. or the guy from the packers. Cant remember their names but I am sure whoever it is CNS will make the RIGHT choice for what HE wants!!
