I'll repeat what I said to some friends following the game:
I like where we are. We couldn't have shot any worse, particularly from 3 in the 1st half. Defense is showing great effort and taking pride in trying to get stops. Offense is crashing the boards, which is a nice sign we haven't always been accustomed of seeing. We win that game above a 50% clip at this stage of the season IMO if you sim it out 100 times. Our ceiling is much higher than Purdue's but they brought back a veteran team with a tight rotation. Other than Edey, which they have done a good job of replacing, many of the guys you saw were on the runner up team from last year. Credit to Purdue for making contested three's and big shots when they needed to. Some of it reminded me of the Kentucky game from last year when they went nuclear and scored 117 on us. Teams definitely lock in when they play us and that is a sign of respect, we just have to make sure we are playing with a sense of urgency and executing as well. I think losing a few games, similar to our football team, will be a good thing long term for the group. We have an air of confidence but for some it can err on the side of arrogance if not put into perspective. Losing creates humility for winners and I think Oates will reinforce that at practice. Oates runs one of the fastest and most intense practices in the country and so I see us looking sharper on both ends as the season progresses. As far as the referee's were against Purdue, I thought for the most part it was well officiated. The call on Stevenson down low when he was WWE suplexed was arguably one of the worst things I've seen, but other than that we can't expect to get 50/50 calls on the road in an OOC game against one of the top traditional powers in the sport. Oates will figure out the rotations and it will be interesting to see what this team looks like once Youngblood is put in the mix. He is one of the best 3 point shooting players in the country and has great ability to penetrate and finish at the rim. I've said it once and I'll say it again, Philon is a future lottery pick and if he keeps working and stays humble we will only get one year of him at the Capstone. He is lightning in a bottle and the team feeds off his energy. If we win it this year, he will be a huge reason why that has occurred. The main focus is to continue to improve, win enough in the regular season to be a top 2 seed come tourney time, and to be playing our best ball when March gets here.
