Politics: Midterm elections catch-all thread...

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

Dems control the House, Trump will stroke out before 2020.
They are going to make his life miserable, and it’s doubtful anything gets accomplished legislatively in the next two years.
Stalemate is better than more tax cuts for the rich anyway.

The dude thrives when he has an enemy. If the House Dems attack, he will just smile and attack back. If you put him in attack mode, he will win in 2020.

Their better approach would be to force him to veto veto veto. Get him on the record on votes the independents care most about.

But, we know that won’t happen.

Can’t get in the pen with the hogs....they know what to do

Did my part. Handel is human garbage.

So I went out to eat the other night and who walks into the restaurant right after us? Human Garbage herself. I was civil but she didn't come near our table to campaign or she would have heard an earful. Proud of my neighbors in the 6th for rejecting this filth

he thrives when he can attack and has a house investigation group covering his butt, he just lost his cover. Adam Schiff is going to make the next 2 years hell. Tax returns, public testimony, subpoenas. It's gonna be fun to watch. Trump will attack but imo he will look more and more pathetic by the day doing so.

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

Just because the GOP abused the powers of the House does not mean the Dems should or will. The proper time to begin considering impeachment is when there is sufficient evidence from congressional investigators or the special counsel. Until then, Dems should use their authority to introduce and pass good legislation, conduct the appropriate investigations that the GOP has blocked, and let the chips fall as they may.

Of course I can, and I think you're missing the point. Had Mueller presented his findings to a GOP House, they could have buried it like everything else these past two years. Now they can't. This is separate from the question of whether impeachment/conviction is politically feasible.

Absolutely absurd. They were literally one surprise vote away from doing this very thing.

I agree with you on all points (especially the first) except the third. I don’t think Republicans care if they repeal ACA or not. It’s become something like abortion and other firebrand issues they play to their base to get elected and then do nothing. Makes for a good sound bite or political ad but nothing more.

My family was on an ACA plan from its inception to this past August when my wife got a teaching job. PEEHIP insurance is fantastic. The ACA plans are not great but will suffice for those who need insurance, and it is better than having nothing. It met our family’s needs when we needed it although I was paying double for essentially the same plan through BCBS that I had prior to ACA.

Nope. It will make the democrats look petty and like they are on a witch hunt just like the Kavanaugh fiasco. You are not going to make Trump look pathetic to his base. Every time folks have tried, it gets him votes. Furthermore, every tweet he sends, and gets national headlines, will be pointing out how the democratic controlled house is holding up government.

The best plan of action for the dems is to actually have Pelosi work with Mcconnell to get things done and don't give the POTUS ammunition for his twitter-gun.

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

I actually think Pelosi is a very effective leader for the House Dems, but I agree that she needs to step aside. If the Dems are trying to brand themselves as the anti-corruption party, they need a new face. She's more of a liability than anything.
You need Pelosi, who else would keep Auntie "Impeach 45" Maxine under wraps. I don't see Pelosi stepping aside either even though it'd be the smart thing to do long term.

Nothing indicates that democrats will act as adults and reach across the aisle. Nor do they care about the good of the country. This plays right into Trump's hand for 2020. It's one thing to say a bunch of things will happen if democrats get power, now we'll get to see it first hand. It will be wall to wall meaningless investigations into nothing(i.e. russian collusion). Democrat low information voters won't understand why Trump isn't kicked out of office and stay home in 2020. Trump v Pelosi for the next two years, grab your popcorn.

Trump's base doesn't matter. He can't win with them alone. If the D's keep pushing Trump will keep alienating everyone but his base and he will lose 2020 soundly. Pandering to those idiots is why Trump lost so big last night.

Can't help but wonder if Trump had been willing to campaign on the economy and an economic plan going forward would the Democrats have had an opportunity to make any gains at all. Then it becomes a quandary for moderates. After facing the most uncivil attacks from the right it becomes expected of them to reach across the aisle to the corporatist who are dedicated to their destruction by any means possible.

I do totally agree that if the Dems proceed to emulate Trey Gowdy and Devin Nunes it would be to their demise. They need instead to focus on expanding the base of voters that
helped them win back the House.

I thought Pelosi set an excellent tone last night and should plan to transition her leadership to a Speaker who would be attractive to the voting base they need in 2020.

And just like the civility threads it's all about how one group of people should act a certain way even when your own is never willing to do the same.

The Dems can't force him to veto because they only control the House. Now, they can use the same strategy and force McConnell to block everything they do--that allows them to make the entire GOP complicit, not just Trump.

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

I'm just glad that there is one check against Trump and that Dems don't have unfettered control either. Neither the D's or the R's know how to govern. They know how to play games and that's about it.

An Aunt Jemima reference? C'mon.

i love all of the concern about how we'd better be careful how we treat him. it's like he is a troubled child who has to be handled with kid gloves otherwise he goes nuts.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if the POTUS, realizing that he now HAS to work with the dems to get anything done, started acting civil? Or better yet, if Pelosi agreed to work together, as long as POTUS deleted his twitter account!

Or even better yet if the criminal traitor POTUS* was just impeached and put into prison where he belongs?

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

This is the elitist attitude that got the "deplorables" energized in the first place. It will get him re-elected too if they continue to underestimate those "idiots".

Clinton's biggest mistake in 2016 was not doubling down on the deporables. She called them out and then got squeemish about it. She should have showed the independants exactly who they were getting bed with. Much of America has woken up to what and who he and they are now. We saw that last night
