Politics: Midterm elections catch-all thread...

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

Republicans really want you to think Kavanaugh wasn’t credibly accused of attempted rape

The conservative outrage machine immediately shifted into overdrive, as Fox News, The Daily Caller, Tina Fey impersonator Sarah Palin, ‘Pizzagate’ truther Mike Cernovich, serial plagiarist Benny Johnson, future Huggies spokesman Charlie Kirk, and former pusher of Russian propaganda Katie Pavlich all breathlessly commented on Hatch’s tweet with varying claims of Kavanaugh’s vindication.

There are some obvious flaws to this line of thinking.

For starters, these “fabricated allegations” were not the focus of Kavanaugh’s confirmation process and they received a small fraction of media coverage compared to the credible accusations by Dr. Ford and Deborah Ramirez.

Also, Hatch’s tweet says the supposed Kavanaugh accuser “referred to law enforcement” admitted she “was not the author of the original “Jane Doe” letter.” The Utah Republican is not asserting that the allegations from the anonymous letter are fabricated.

Did the dirty deed today.....a quick and painless 10 minutes. Much respect for all the poll workers!

The show must go on.......

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

A lot of people I know voted early, I guess I will be the only loser voting on Tuesday.
Not at all.

I can't recall the exact figures but here in Florida we had a record number of early voters but it's still a fraction of how many will vote on election day itself.

Good to hear you are participating in the process, Design!

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

Voted on Wednesday with my 2 year old daughter in tow. There were a fair amount of people voting early (and I think that’s consistent at other early voting locations. Despite the large crowd, I got to go to the front of the line because I was bringing a young child with me. I was in and out in under 10, average wait otherwise was probably at least 30 minutes I guess, probably more. Spent the next hour chasing her around a mostly deserted children’s section of the library while waiting to go pick her brother up at school.

I will be glad when it is over. I am tired of political ads. I thought switching to streaming it would all go away. That is actually the only ads right now.

10 pieces in Saturday's mail - 9 were political and the 10th....my property tax bill....lol....

I plugged my land line back in tonight thinking "who the heck would call anyone on a Sunday evening?" Sure enough about an hour later...:rolleye2: I'm just waiting for my receivers to charge back up before unplugging it again.

I think we could probably feed the caravan coming with the money spent on this election. I've never seen it this bad. I almost dread 2020!

And I just saw a great idea that no one will heed (actually three states do it exclusively), which would accomplish MANY things along with saving a lot of money (and time): voting exclusively (almost) by mail. Just use recycled paper to satisfy the environmentalists.
Vote when you want, can’t hack any voting machines, no waiting in line - and evidence shows more people actually vote.

mail in voting has problems too. Dominant spouses making sure their partner votes the same (can't happen in a booth) or voting for their children or older parents. Things like that. There is a story on one of the reddit legal forums right now about a college kid that had her Dad vote straight Republican on an absentee ballot he asked for, for her and then taunting her with pictures of it. She had planned to vote straight D, her only recourse is turning her Dad in on a felony election fraud charge. How do you handle that?

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

Not a fan of voting by mail, either. Too many opportunities for fraud.

I wish every state (especially Alabama) would offer early voting. Makes it much more convenient for the voters.

took me 10 mins to vote 2 weeks ago. I wish I could count on the integrity of the voting system but my election is being run by one of the shadiest people in the State who also happens to be a candidate

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

Count me in. Alabama restricts early voting so I'll be there tomorrow morning.
One thing I really miss about Florida :/

I voted absentee because my work generally has me out of town during the week. But by a twist of fate, I will be in town tomorrow so I could have voted at my polling place, which I can walk to.

There are a number of reasons you can vote absentee, but you don’t have to prove you will be out of town or anything like that. So you can vote early, you just have to go to the courthouse.

Re: 2018 midterm elections catch-all thread

Is there a specific reason there is no early voting in Alabama?

I have to admit...this is something I have taken for granted here....even though I endeavour to enthusiastically participate every chance I get.

It has never been put into place. I am not aware of there ever being a push to get it started. I wish someone would so we could see who all is in favor of it. I don’t know of a single good argument against it.

Are the old folks that help you out at the polling station paid or volunteers? Having to pay someone for a couple weeks extra work might be the argument against it. Sure does make it convenient though.

Pretty sure they are paid. Yes, it would cost more to have early voting. But that is a worthy expenditure to me.
