I had some great conversations this weekend. I am a HS Coach here in Connecticut and we had the Nike Coaches Clinic this weekend.
I got to talk one on one with Les Miles, Rush Popst, and Urban Meyer.
Just a quick breakdown:
Les Miles - Said he has alot of respect for Bama and even considered it while at OSU. Did we offer or inquire before hiring CMS ? Did say he was "going after Nick" and wants to beat him bad!
Rush Popst - really alot nicer than I had heard. Very open( possibly because I don't coach against him) Said he had interviewed with CNS to coach receivers. Didn't get it obviously.
Urban Meyer - Said he and staff really had to adjust thinking offensively and the biggest factor was the defenses in the SEC, Bama really opening their eyes last year. One interesting note, he had all these cut-ups showing there offensive successes over the last two years (about 35 minutes worth), had the Barn, LSWHO, and most others, yet not one play versus the Tide.He must have said 100 times how the SEC was the best. He also said Percy Harvins would win the Heisman and they will be trying to get him the ball 30 times a game this coming year.
Sorry, for the long post , but it was a great weekend talking football with these guys. There's alot more I could post as I got about 30 minutes one on one with them. I actually sat and had beers and just BSed with Rush. I came away with alot more respect for all three.

Re: Miles, Popst, & Meyer

He said they pretty much ditched the Zone read as the DEs in the SEC just ate it up. It was pretty interesting presentation as he was showing how they devised ways to run the ball. He said their goal was 200 yards rushing a game, only averaged 180 this year , but he'll take it. He said their goal was to have all skill players on his offense be sub 4.4.

Re: Miles, Popst, & Meyer

Yea, all Nike coaches rotate through year by year. Last year it was Tressell and Bellotti. I can't wait for it to be Coach Saban's time!! Hopefully next year!

Re: Miles, Popst, & Meyer

Les Miles threw his hat in the ring a couple of times the first time I believe was when we hired fRan.

Yes, he talked about Leak not being able to run certain plays and this next year they would expand on what they could do. His big thing was that Tebow could bench press 400 lbs. and that would allow them to run alot of QB Zone, wrap and lead. In his presentation, he pretty much diagramed all the plays they had it this year for Tebow and talked about Leak not being willing or able to do alot of what is asked in their running game. Didn't really seem enamoured with Leak, not throwing him under the bus, but definitely not embracing him.

I don't mean this in any negative way, because I'm sure he had a great presentation overall. However, what moron wouldn't want their skill players to be 4.4 or better?

I felt that Coach Kines taught him a thing or two last year and frankly this year. Had we not made a few dumb mistakes we could have taken them deep into the 4th quarter before that game was decided. Don't know if we would have won, but we could have stayed with them without one or two mistakes.

He actually mentioned in his presentation a couple of times how things that worked very well at Utah couldn't be run against a Joe Kines // Alabama defense. I tell other coaches here all the time about the defenses in the SEC being the best,. Meyer came into a 2 hour talk and the thing he talked about most was how great and fast the defenses are and how he didn't buy into it until he came to Fla. I got a kick out of it. He several times would diagram a play on the overhead and say, " we ran this a different way at Bowling Green or Utah, but that S %*t wouldn't work against Alabama.

CrimsonCt, I actually briefly met the new HC at RHAM this weekend. Pretty nice guy. Forgot his name.
I think his name is Peter Calin, but I've never met him. They formed a team the year after I graduated, and they didn't even have a home field to practice on for the first year or two. I checked it out again this past winter and they'd finally built one.

I like that Meyer spoke so respectfully about our defense, given our mediocre position in the SEC for both of his years at UF. I'd expect him to spend more breath complimenting LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, etc. It sounds like that '05 game still stings Meyer.

That game was the reality check for Meyer. His offense hadn't been running up and down the field on anybody before our game either. I just think the Bama '05 game solidified to him that he was going to have to make some adjustments to his offense. His 06 offense on average ( I believe) 24 pts/game in SEC games and a 28 pt/game overall.

The defense is what kept the Gators in the hunt. Their defense was very very good this season.

Believe me, he made it VERY apparent in front of 500 college and high school coaches that the SEC was all about D and there were none better ! Said he had coached for 19? years in the "big 10" and they had thoughts that they were the best conference, yet they really didn't have a clue! It was awesome to hear him go on and on about how tough the SEC really is ! Said their Strength Coach had posted qoutes all over their hotel and meeting rooms in Phoenix about how the "big 10" was the best and toughest. He said the Gator players really took it to heart and wanted to show how the SEC is the best. To be honest with you, I'll proably me more of a Gator fan when not playing the Tide because of the respect that Urban showed the Tide and how the players wanted to represent the conference. It's not like he was in Birmingham, he was in front of a bunch of Yankees who have no clue what real HS and college football is about. Rush really blew their minds Friday night!
