MLB 2011 Draft starts tonight

Interesting quotes from Dugas and Gaspard:

"We're going to soak it in for a couple of days and when they get back to me we'll see," Dugas said. "Coming back there's really a lot in my favor. We'll see what the money holds."

Dugas said that either way it will work itself out, calling it a, "win-win situation."

"This is going to be a good team next year," Dugas said. "I'm in a position to break some records here which would be really cool."

Gaspard said he expects Dugas to weigh his options carefully after being selected in the eighth round. With the money normally dropping off after the third or fourth round, Gaspard said he's unsure if Dugas will sign, adding that he's, "very interested in coming back to school."

I don't know if he's just posturing, or if he legitimately may come back to school.

As good as Alex Avila was I had no clue that he would be catching in the majors in a couple of years after leaving school. As great as Wade LeBlanc was I never would have guessed that he would be laboring in the PCL while contemporaries like David Price are in the limelight, pitching in the playoffs and World Series. Taylor has this chance to go as far as his talent and the circumstances will let him. Of course I would love to see him come back, but I don't see it. I wish him the very best.

This MLB draft is always one of the saddest times of the year for me.

AwBArns Trent Mummey last season was drafted in the 4th round and got 224K signing bonus. What does that tell you about the 8th round? I think slot for this round is at most 100K! I love Dugas spin on this already with the Marketing campaign about his "break school records" eeerrrrr extra 25K, "this team will be good next year" eeeeerrrr extra 25K , Buy me away from all this and my degree! Gotta love it! Like Nick Saban says to his players everyday " What are you selling today" ?

Congrats to Adam Morgan and Taylor Dugas! Signing deadline is Aug 15th and If they're smart they will hold until then. For our team, we need them to sign and move on quickly because I'm sure our coaching staff has already spent the scholly money on new recruits thinking they are a done deal gone.

Nathan Kilcrease goes in the 30th round to Oakland. Real glad he'll at least get a chance. I met him in Tallahassee and he was real friendly, seems like a good guy. Good luck and congrats!!!

No, I meant Price, and that's because of my crimson colored glasses and that epic pitching duel that Wade won up in Nashville when we beat Price that time. On that day Wade was the better pitcher, so I have never been able to accept that he has not or will not be as successful at professional baseball.

And yeah, DRob is another guy who I had no clue about as far as him being a successful pro. I knew he was darn good for us, but to be in the bigs so quickly and stick? That's pretty unexpected, I would think?

I really didn't expect his quick call-up either. And I didn't expect him to have the results that he did. But I'm glad he did. He was one of my favorite players in his career here.

The epic duel in Nashville you might be thinking of from 2005 was actually between T.J. Large and Jensen Lewis, which Vandy won 1-0. One of the greatest pitching duels I have ever witnessed, the outcome notwithstanding. Price started the Saturday game that year and went 6, and Robertson worked 6.1 innings of relief in a game that Vandy eventually won in the 13th. That game was noted for being a truly impressive showing for the two freshmen pitchers.

Wade only started against Price once, in 2006 at home, and our hitters absolutely shelled Price for eight runs (Downs and Belcher homered), while Wade cruised to the W with 8 shutout innings.

In 2007, in Nashville, Price went the distance with a three-hit shutout against the great Miers Quigley, who actually held his own in the loss.

But back to your point, I agree that Robertson's rapid ascent to the majors and his consistent success since was pretty unexpected. Yeah, I don't blame you, but it does require some crimson-colored glasses to be unable to accept that LeBlanc would not be as successful as a pro as the first pick in the draft! ;)

Miers Quigley, the Human Rain Delay as called by the Vandy radio announcers, was epic in that game. I think he and Price took 0s until the 8th when Vandy broke through for 3.

Too bad he stayed out poopface drunk later that year, coming in at 7:30 a.m. and starting vs. Auburn that night (and getting hammered and pulled in the 2nd). Or the time he was throwing up in the dugout before a start vs. Georgia (which he also lost). Or how about that mysterious ACL injury off the field that ended his career in 2009. WE MISS YOU MIERS!

Well, I knew that Wade had one heck of a game against Price and Vandy :).

Meirs Quigley! So many guys come through a college program and then their names are pushed to the back-burner by others. How is Del Howell doing in the pros? Is he still pitching?

I am still in shock that Adam got picking in the 3rd round. I know that MLB drafts on potential, but that seems excessively high.

Here's a tweet I found from a friend of Gardeck that may indicate which way he's leaning.

D_Jacobson_10:
"@FutureSox As far as Ian Gardeck goes, I talked to his family (grew up with him) and he wants to be done with college. Gonna sign."

If true, disappointing, but I was kinda expecting it. However it sucks to hear a guy committed to us is tired of college. I mean, why commit to us in the first place if you had no intention of bypassing the draft.

Man, we know how to strike out with our top guys. Meanwhile, guys like Cole, Jason Esposito, Purke skipped out on first round money (albeit with some contentious money considerations in Purke's case), and I've heard Bauer had zero interest in his first round potential coming out of HS, making himself ineligible by early-enrollment.

I just hope he makes up his mind whether or not to sign relatively quickly (like next couple of weeks quickly) and doesn't leave Gaspard floating in the wind wondering if he's going to sign or not.
