In terms of my expectations for any new hire (and one reason I'm stuck on hiring a proven coach), is simply for Alabama to be in the hunt for the NCAA tournament every single year. It's unrealistic to expect a birth every year, but if they're not at least on the bubble something is wrong. SEC titles? At this point that seems a bit lofty, but I would like to see Alabama at least not be a first round loser in the SEC tournament, it would be nice to see them win some games in the post season, in one of the tournaments at least.
Beyond that? That's it for an incoming coach. I'd like more, but if Alabama ends up with another Wimp Sanderson type hire? I can stomach that, Alabama has proven they can do worse. What you don't want, is a coach who is not making the NCAA tournament, with no end in sight. A gamble could produce that (again).
The great thing about Marshall, and why I've been hoping for him is because he is a proven program builder. He took a program that wasn't especially good in basketball and turned them into a legitimate contender, an elite mid-major (not just automatic bids to the NCAA tournament). Four straight years beyond the first round of the NCAA tournament, that's pretty good for any coach, but for someone coaching at a school that only made the tournament 8 times before his arrival? That's pretty darn impressive.
The question mark is recruiting, can he go toe to toe with the best recruiters in the SEC? The real question I guess is does he have to? Grant was at least a decent recruiter, and Marshall beat him 3 out of 4 times. That's one reason I'm not going crazy with my expectations, if someone like Marshall needs 3 stars that listen to him vs. a bunch of entitled better recruits, so be it. All I want is someone whose team plays well.
