Re: going way out on this one

Well i wouldn't mind P. Johnson, but for some reason i got a gut feeling its' going to be Tommy Bowden.
And really, i don't know why!!!

Anyway, whoever it is will be an improvment.

Re: IMO, it's gonna be P. Johnson

Just a question to those with more knowledge.

I've seen several references to the innovative OL technique taught by Grobe, which is always amended by the phrase "borderline legal". If the NCAA were to legislate rules which negated his OL technique, would his offense be as sucessful?

Heh what scares me about Grobe is that Wake uses their QB as a FB in many situations this year. :eek2:

Well if your "gut" is telling you Tommy B., then don't fight it my man!:biggrin2:

He may very well be the "wild card" in all of this. He would probably only use the possibility of the hire to squeeze more $$ out of CU's boosters but who knows??

I don't think he has really brought Clemson up to the level that was expected when he was hired and this would probably work against him landing a job like this. But again, who knows?? I'm starting to repeat myself!! Long Day!

Re: New Coach Speculation (ALL THOUGHTS ON COACHING PROSPECTS GO HERE!!!

I'm shocked Jeff Tedford's name hasn't been mentioned......Cal was literally not even a blip on the radar and Tedford has turned them in to BCS contenders and a team that displays demolitions of their opponents.
They've beaten USC exactly ONCE in his tenure there. I agree he's done great work, but given that Cal is a better school than USC and they recruit in the same state he hasn't exactly done wonders vs Pete Carrol.

I know nobody has but my point here is that he's not some sort of wonderkind.

In fact, none of the coaches available out there seem to be the "perfect hire."

Re: IMO, it's gonna be P. Johnson

For it to get to Johnson, it might have to first go through Grobe, and it would almost certainly stop there before Johnson had a chance to say anything. But that's just my impression of it.

God , I hope not . IMO , CPJ is wwwwwaaaaaaaaaaayyyy more proven than Grobe . Not that it matters what I think but , things couldn't possibly get any lower than they are now unless , Grobe is hired . JOMO . :mad2:

The thought of Grobe turns my stomach . CPJ is a far more proven coach . It's really not even that close but , they aren't asking any of us are they ?

I like Paul Johnson but I'm not sure he can get it done on this level. I think the University is going "BIG TIME" on this hire and money is no object.

Re: IMO, it's gonna be P. Johnson

CPJ was 62-10 at georgia southern with back-to-back national titles. he was the OC at GS when they had tracy ham at qb and called it the "ham bone". i'd say he can coach and recruit just fine and he'll have a good quality staff.

he's under more pressure to win at navy than people think. i don't think the pressure at Bama would bother him.

Re: New Coach Speculation (ALL THOUGHTS ON COACHING PROSPECTS GO HERE!!!

Many apologies. My source contacted me last night and Spurrier is out of the picture.

Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk tabbed Johnson as Navy's 36th head football coach on Dec. 9, 2001. It was an announcement that was met with great fanfare from Naval Academy football fans around the world. Johnson came to Navy from Georgia Southern, where he posted a 62-10 (.861) record, won two-straight I-AA National Championships (1999 and 2000), five-straight Southern Conference Championships and was named the Division I-AA National Coach of the Year four-consecutive times (1997-2000).

After Johnson took over as head coach at Georgia Southern in 1997, he returned the Eagle program to national prominence statistically and in the won-lost ledger. In addition to Georgia Southern's 62-10 mark, the Eagles scored 2,855 points (39.7 points per game), picked up 25,941 rushing yards (360.3 yards per game), 7,816 passing yards (108.6 yards per game) and 33,757 total yards (468.8 yards per game). GSU scored 380 touchdowns in the Johnson Era, an average of 5.3 per game. The Eagles' scoring margin under Johnson was +21.5 (39.7-18.5).

Johnson picked up a milestone victory in the 2000 I-AA National Championship Game against Montana. Not only did the 27-25 victory give Georgia Southern its second-straight national title, but it was Johnson's 50th-career win in four seasons. Only three other coaches in the history of Division I football have won 50 or more games in four seasons, as Johnson joined Walter Camp (1888-1891, 54-2 at Yale), George Woodruff (1892-1895, 53-4 at Penn) and Bob Pruett (1996-99, 50-4 at Marshall) on the exclusive list.

This should be our guy

Re: My opinion/knowledge of whats going on.

Credibility? For what, being absolutely wrong?

I challenge you to a loser leave town match (like the old days of NWA rasslin' with Gordon Solie out of Atlanta). If either of these two (Saban or SOS) are coaching the University of Alabama Crimson Tide come this spring I'll leave this board forever! If either one of them are NOT coaching then you leave the board.

I am joking about the loser leave town thing, but I'm serious about the following:

I would be totally disgusted if they hired Saban after he ripped our boobies off with his comments today.

I would be sorely disappointed in SOS if he came here after what he has said to the people of Carolina and his players.

Forget those two coaches, they ain't happening at this point in time.:BigA: :BigA: :BigA: :BigA:
You know I'm wrong how. It's your opinion that they aren't coming, while I'm posting fairly lax information regarding them even being interested.

Some of you seem to take Tradition for granted, because for whatever reason the "others" have implanted it in your head that no one cares. When it couldn't be further from the truth, It's so "OUT THERE" to think big names are even INTERESTED in BAMA. Did I say they were coming? NO.

We are going to get someone great, and the University is trying to hit it out of the park. Whether they are or not, will be determined in the coming days.

Here's the point about ANY hire they make.

We will not know until years from now if they are a "great" hire or not.

We, as fans, need to realize that a HC takes years to have his full impact felt in a program. From recruiting the players that fit his program, to installing an offense and a defense to assembling a staff, these are things that take a LONG, LONG time to play out at the level where the Crimson Tide expects to be.

Yes, others have done more quicker but look where they are now. Terry Bowden? Turned Auburn around in a year and then ran them into the ground. Stoops? Turned Oklahoma around in 2 years and then has fizzled in the Big 12 (until this year).

We have got to sign up to a HC that - providing they stay out of strip clubs and student apartments - we will give 4-6 years to fully mature in the program.

Re: IMO, it's gonna be P. Johnson

I thought that we should have offered UM when he was at Bowling Green. I was correct in my opinion of him.

This time I think that Paul Johnson should be our guy. Proven over and over. He runs whatever offense suits his talent on hand.

See, the University is trying to hire someone to counter this "lag period". Many believe the talent is already in place and that a new HC should be able to come in next season and be successful.

And they will - any one of the candidates could put up a 10 win season next year with this talent. Heck, I am pretty sure Shula could have won 8 at a minimum.

The question is where will the program be in 4 years? That's where a coach really starts to see his emphasis. Shula never got there - I am convinced his loyalty to his assistants is what tipped him over the line - but will we let the next guy? We need to come to some sort of a conclusion that, barring incredible circumstances, we're going to make a LONG TERM hire.
