New Coach Speculation

...and no, I have no inside info from Columbia other than our local sports talk and internet boards.

Are you a ****.... fan? I mean it does not matter, I was just curious and yes you make some valid points that is a good recruiting weapon for Spurrier and South Carolina, I've been thinking that all along. Don't be concerned though, Steve Spurrier loves golf and Augusta National too much......

CSS information. I have heard that CSS has been offered a 7 year deal worth over $4 million a year to bee UA HC. Has anybody else heard this? I keep hearing CSS name mentioned over and over even after the denials. I am beginning to think there is some truth to CSS being at BAMA.

Fan of both schools, lifelong Bama fan and USC alum. Sort of in a win-win situation with Spurrier, either way he will be coaching a team I pull for next year.

Right now I just think he is playing Bama a little, not for a raise but to enjoy seeing the Bama fans squirm and the national attention can only help his program at USC. Spurrier has a bounce in his step and just seems to be enjoying the heck out of what he is doing here at USC. After his Redskins debacle I think he has realized that some things money can't buy. I would never count out a school with the resources & history of Bama, but I would still be very surprised if they landed the OBC.

wonder if Spurrier would come to the podium and do the hat thing that so many recruits do?

A Bama hat, a Miami hat, and a South Car hat.

just trying to lighten the mood a bit

How about if Mal Moore has a press conference with Spurrier, Johnson, and Rodriguez sitting behind him....

Spurrier just received two huge verbal committments for South Carolina from 6-4 WR Jason Barnes of Charlotte and 6-4 WR Joseph Hills of Bradenton FL. Both were high on Spurrier's recruiting board for USC and had been waivering, especially Barnes who had been a UNC lean until now. I can't imagine that the kid would go ahead & commit to USC over UNC with the Tarholes recent hire if there was even an inkling that Spurrier were leaving.

According to at least one recruit (radio interview) Spurrier is having a field day with all this on the recruiting trail, laughing about it with recruits and telling them it is a bunch of cr@p.

When the dust settles Spurrier may have a new powerful recruiting tool at USC - he turned down millions from Miami & Bama to stay at USC. I think Spurrier is playing this to the tilt. Loves seeing his name in lights and enjoys seeing Bama faithful squirm & get all giddy over their once hated enemy.

Also, Spurrier is very close to garnering a committment from prize qb Stephen Garcia out of Tampa, FL, possibly this weekend.

Could you explain to me how this is helping his recruiting? It would seem to be a distraction not an advantage. If a deal with Alabama has not been finalized then why would he cease to recruit? Why would he tell the recruits he is considering another job if he was not sure he was going to get it? Spurrier probably isn't coming to Bama but if he were interested in the job would he tell his recruits? I don't think so. :rolleye2:

The recruiting issue is not that big of a deal. Signing day is a long, long way off.

I do not think Spurrier would be out selling USC as hard as he is right now if he were in negotiations with Alabama or Miami or whoever. Just not his style. Spurrier may be a jerk at times, but throughout his career he has proven to be a very straight shooter. I don't know the man so just stating my impressions of his character.

As for recruiting advantages, if Bama hires a coach and it is not Spurrier, and if Miami follows suit and hires a coach and it is not Spurrier, he will be able to squelch all the rumors from his competition that he is only in Columbia for the short run. He will be able to tell recruits that he is so dedicated to USC and beleives so strongly that he can win there that he turned down millions of dollars from two of the most successful programs in all of college football to remain in Columbia. If I were a 17 or 18 year old recruit that would impress me and would help to convince me that Spurrier could get it done at USC.

Explain to me how this scenario would not help recruiting:rolleyes:

Kirk McNair is doing his part to stir the pot on BamaMag. He just posted an article discussing the defensive coordinator possibilities on Spurrier's new staff at Bama.

Here's the thing: Stories without at least some validity don't normally have legs.

Speculation regarding Shula's impending departure began about 5 minutes after the Iron Bowl ended. Spurrier's name came up about 5 minutes later.

As we have seen this past few days, fans can come up with some pretty bizzarre possibilities with respect to potential head coaches...probably none more so than Spurrier's.

However, his name just refuses to go away. Is it because Jimmy Sexton is right in the middle of this coaching search? Thats obviously part of it, but the Bill Oliver connection and comments probably did as much to fan the flames.

I didn't think I was nuts enough to buy into this rumor, but I think Spurrier found out after Stoops went to OK, that he needs defense to win it all. He has wanted to work with Bill Oliver since he left Florida...may be before.

This whole idea is crazy, but the longer it stays around, you have to start wondering...

Believe it or not, your right.

The SOS rumor continues to hang around. And it will until he just flat out comes out and says I'm not going to Alabama, or stands up to the podium and is welcomed as the new HC.

Bachelor #1, your team is down by 7 and your offense has the ball at the 50 yard line with 4:00 left in the game. It's fourth and 5, your defense has played well, but your running game has been shut down all game, and your quarterback has thrown for a lot of yards, but has thrown interceptions on the last two possessions. What do you do?
