Actually, it's an intended double entendre. I don't think Kelly missed the joke at all, he just botched the (pardon the pun here) execution of it. Bill Belichick can never be Bill Parcells in a press conference.
And Kelly only made it worse in his post game presser trying to explain it. In the end Kelly was basically saying those didn’t understand he was making a joke (without giving context of it being an old John McKay quote) and thought he was serious, were idiots (without calling them idiots) in his typical, arrogant Brian Kelly style.

His explanation in the presser was almost as cringe worthy as his original ham fisted interview.

As a Bucs fan from an early age I can assure you it was a tongue-in-cheek play on words. A double entendre. McKay was absolutely joking about 'murdering' the team for their poor performance.

He was known to have a wicked sense of humor, this was par for the course.
We couldn’t block, but we made up for it by not tackling.

I thought everyone knew that old joke, it was fairly well known. People have lost their sense of humor and now are constantly in search of something to be upset about.
Well it’s also fairly known what a Karen is and that Dabo is one of them, but still people can’t always make the connection.

Kelly butchering the joke was probably the worst part of it, and probably killed it. Its like the Tommy Boy butcher and T bone analogy. Messing it up just slightly sounds extremely wrong, but getting it right sounds extremely witty.

"Can't stop the pass or the run. Otherwise, we're in great shape."

"We will be back. Maybe not this century, but we will be back and we will be a better football team."

"We knew he kicked the ball low, so we put the tallest guy we had in there on defense and told him just to get to the line of scrimmage and hold up his arms. I call that brilliant coaching."

"Hold when you're at home and don't hold when you're on the road."

And probably my favorite McKay quote of all time:
"Three or four plane crashes and we're in the playoffs."

My favorite which is a very true statement:

"If you have everyone back from a team that lost 10 games, experience isn't too important."

A coaching decision that does not lead to a win does not make that decision wrong. It just makes it look wrong. Challenging that play was the right call. Period.
Absolutely. If the refs asked any coach, "Would you like to kick this field goal from 50 yards out or from 43 yards out?" Only an idiot would say "From 50 yards, please."

My PTSD will not allow me to talk this way about Alabama’s kicker.
I remember going to the Met to see Hoover vs Thompson because everyone told me I had to see Lia. So a group of us went there to see him and Bo Jackson’s kin. Well I came away way underwhelmed at Lia but thoroughly impressed with Reichard. I was like “ Alabama fans are excited about the wrong prospect”
