It was a royal "y'all" lol. But the line of thinking is stupid.

There's a lot you can bag on Norvell for. The "Gus on LSD" play calling, for example.

But you make that challenge. A 38 yarder is a much higher percentage kick than a 50 yarder. Whether the kid made the practice kick or not is immaterial.
There was no damn line of thinking. Nobody said a 50 yard FG was more desirable than 43 yard FG! Barner logic, it’s more of it’s the most Norvell thing ever to make the 50 as he calls a timeout , and miss the 43! Oh, And challenge the play before you have a chance to ice your own kicker

I'm not an Auburn fan. I had no trouble understanding your post. ;)

The biggest "if" in this game for me is what if FSU didn't go for it on 4th on their own end in the 3rd quarter? Norvell almost won in spite of all his dumb decisions.

And ND seems to be drastically overrated as per usual...
That gift Was ND’s last score in regulation!

And before we go with averages lets note how often teams attempt field goals outside of 45 yards.

P5 average for a a 45 yarder is 51%. The averages actually increased at 48, 49, 54, and 55. The averages are all over the place

averages

But what seems to happen is that good kickers are the only one's that attempt longer field goals. And you can kinda see it in NFL averages in which the percentages of kicking a 50 yarder are not that much worse than kicking a 42 yarder.

More or less good kickers kick, and ones that suck lose games and put their fans into an early grave.

I guess it is appropriate FSU loses due to a missed field goal on Bobby Bowden night.

I fell asleep before the end of the game. Could someone please give me a quick summary of this FG that FSU made that got taken down that y’all are talking about?

-the original call was Milton was sacked and it made it a 50 yarder
- they lineup and a second before the snap norvel challenged but the kick went through
- call gets reversed. They kick from 40 and Miss.

That was incredibly boneheaded.

I'm also curious as to why, if medically cleared Milton wasn't the starter. I know that's easy to say now, but we're talking about a guy who threw for 4,000 yards and 37 TDs in a season and he's backing up a guy whose best season was 6TD and 6 INTS? Just wondering what they saw in practice to make that choice...

Fuente at Va Tech did something similar against Liberty last year.
Liberty tries a long (50+) FG on 3rd down with 8 seconds to go, it gets blocked and run back for a Hokie TD. But wait, it seems Fuente had called a TO just before the kick, so the play never happened. Liberty decides not to kick but to run a quick 8 yards out pattern.
Liberty picks up the 8 yards, makes the FG, wins the game.
If Fuente had done done nothing (in hindsight), Hokies would have won the game in an exciting manner.

A coaching decision that does not lead to a win does not make that decision wrong. It just makes it look wrong. Challenging that play was the right call. Period. But the decision to go for it on 4th down in the 3rd quarter on their own 33 yard line? That was a horrible decision. IMO, that cost them the game.

I don't think FSU is 'back', but they have good athletes and Norvell will field competitive teams.

I don't think ND has the horses to win the CFP, but I think they'd be a challenge to anyone not named Alabama or Ohio State right now.

The issue isnt the challenge. Its not immediately doing it. There was a good 40 seconds in between there. He let them line up and kick, and then wait for another 2 minutes. he effectively iced his kicker. He had two timeouts to decide.

This part I agree with, he did ice his kicker but I also think it was the right call to revenue it. The only defense of that I can think of is that it didn't occur to him at all and someone phoned down and was like dude do your job and he didn't have time to do it the right way.

Of course that would just make him seem even more incompetent, which is hard to do after that fourth down call.

Exactly! Why run the kicker out there and line up and a split second before kicking it call the timeout?

Not sure he made much money off of that challenge though…

I was about to turn it off when Notre Dame went up by 18, but glad I watched it all. It was an entertaining game. I was kind of pulling for Florida State, just because of McKinzie Milton's incredible story. I watched the last half on mute though. I wonder why McKinzie Milton was not put into the game earlier? He looked good. I saw the camera focus on his parents a few times. I bet his mom was so nervous yet so proud. Would be funny if they could beat Clemson, but I think it's at Clemson.
