Official Post Game Thread - Everything Here, Please...

Or, is it that the spread has so much going on that it disguises holding? Seriously...I haven't seen holding this bad up until around 3 years ago, and it seemed like it suddenly got much worse. I know there have been a few minor rule changes, but nothing like this.

I know a lot of fans want to pin this loss on Big Andre-gate, but his absence wouldn't matter if this team had more depth on the O-line. Remember, he was out in the Tulane game...and it showed then, as well.

Looking back, we were premature this year. We did well, as long as we played mistake-free football with all starters. However, even in games with Kentucky and Tulane, we showed weaknesses on both offense and defense.

We have to remember we are still in transition. We still have a few leftover Shula players, and are playing a lot of true freshmen from Coach Saban.

I have to admit, I'm concerned about the first game with VaTech next season. Breaking in a new quarterback will be a big challenge against VT, though, IMHO, I'm looking forward to a Coach Saban-recruited-Jim McElwain-coached-QB in 2009.

I was very frustrated with this loss, as it reminds me of the collapse after the LSU game in 2007. I think there were too many distractions, not enough depth, and a ill-prepared (mentally) team after the loss to Florida in the SECCG. But, I think we'll be back in Atlanta next season, though we might have to go with one or two defeats.

JMHO.

After driving the hour back to Tuscaloosa from my sister's house in Birmingham where we watched the game, I was able to shake off my anger about this game.

First of all, like many have said, we really had a lot of good fortune this year as far as injuries, off the field incidents, etc. This week I started getting a bad feeling just because of all the negative news that was coming out--i.e. Andre, CKS to Clemson, etc. It felt to me tonight like all the drama caught up with us. We didn't seem to have the same focus/passion as usual at the start of the game--CNS commented on this himself postgame with Eli.

When a team is a legitimate title contender, the loss of one player will not affect that team as deeply as Andre's loss hurt us tonight. Another year to recruit and develop the guys from these past two great classes CNS has already brought in will help tremendously. We need more depth, period.

Finally, I'd like to say that this team will always be a favorite of mine. We didn't win in the fashion that's popular nowadays--fancy pomp and circumstance. We won 12 tough games this year on nothing but pluck and grit, and I'm so proud of all these guys. But, when watching us play tonight, I realized really that we still weren't where we want to be. We still had some guys out there that aren't upper-echelon SEC talents. This is not a knock on any of our guys--I believe it's just a simple observation.

ROLL TIDE!

This was just a total team loss...the o-line was horrid tonight of course not having AS and MJ getting hurt didn't help...the OL had some good moments, but they were few and far between. I felt sorry for JPW having to go out this way...not his finest night, but constanly being harassed didn't help his cause tonight. His career was like a Timex watch...he took a lickin, but kept on ticking! Probably the most durable QB we've had at Bama. The defense played like they were completely confused most of the night...the tackling was not very good and I sure wish our DB's would turn around to find the ball...this has been a problem for years. Missed FG's didn't help even though none were chip shots. I love JA but there are times he just needs to field the punt instead of letting our opponent get another 10-20 yds on the bounce. Give Utah credit...they were the better team tonight!

While I am disappointed that we lost I never thought at the beginning of the year we would finish 12-2 and play in the SECCG for the chance to play in the BCSCG. I want to thanks CNS and his staff for the great job they did this year! I want to thank the nine seniors for their leadership in helping get this thing turned around. While a few who post here still like to bash Shula and in earlier posts in this thread are glad the last of the Shula regime are being FLUSHED out of the system just remember it was these nine Shula players who were major factors in getting it turned around.

You can never pin a loss on one player, NO player stood out today... Maybe Javy, because that punt return was amazing...

But overall, we just got whipped everywhere:

O-line was ineffective(too many d-lineman going through UNTOUCHED)

Receivers weren't catching

QB missed too many open throws

Running backs missed holes

DBs couldn't cover receivers

when DBs covered receivers, DBs tried to tackle around the arms

D-line couldn't get pressure

Play calling on offense was ineffective(3rd and 3 and you try a 40 yard pass when you KNOW they are blitzing as opposed to throwing a quick screen/slant OVER it)

Defense looked lost

Field Goal kicker has his usual game

too many UNNECESSARY penalties

other than that, we played pretty good and of course, the Andre situation didn't help us, but last time I checked, Andre doesn't play defense, you can't say "the defense was on the field all night".... Because, well, Utah scored with ease their 1st 3 drives

I have been depressed and angry all evening, but I was about to finally go to bed still angry and a pleasant thought just jumped into my mind....the barn just hired Gene Chizik to be their head coach!!! I feel better now.

Wow, very well said! Thanks for helping us keep our heads up.

Just think, as badly as we were exposed tonight, we shut the Barn out completely. How bad does that make them, TN, and every other team we whipped decisively?

another 12-2 year next year is about the best we can hope for.

Huh? We're getting most of our team back and if recruiting stays as strong as it has we'll have quite a few more weapons. I can't imagine that we'll just tread water if the team plays to their potential. Don't let your pessimism over tonight's game color your perspective of the future. Next season was supposed to be our season, not this one. Even so, look how much of a run we made even given our depth problems and so few play makers.

really? i know in the off-season coaches travel to other schools to study up on successful packages etc. they aren't limited by conference.

I heard this from a reporter friend of mine. According to him, if Urban Meyer did give Utah any assistance, it's going to be requested that he receive consequences from the SEC office. He didn't know what these consequences were (probably some sort of fine or scheduling issue). From what I understood, he seemed to believe there was a rule that SEC coaches can't help other teams outside of the conference against a team within the conference.
