A large powerful team was out-quicked by a smaller team with greater desire. Older Alabama fans remember how that works...
I totally disagree. Which ever team forces the flow of the game to be played within their style of football will usually win. It has nothing to do with the "spread" being that dang dominant. We made mistake, after mistake, after mistake that had nothing to do with the style of offense they were running. But the biggest mistake we made was not showing up with the same amount of "want to" as Utah.

Overall, at times this season we have struggled on offense. Considering all the OL disruption this week, we should not be surprised that we struggled to control the ball. But, I was most surprised by our numerous missed tackles. Not typical of an Alabama coached team.
I agree. With offensive line protection and run blocking, we would have sustained drives, controlled the clock, and certainly impacted this game. Momentum means everything in college football and we never could sustain it last night.

it was very frustrating to observed those plays last night.
Utah basically knew what we were doing.
3rd down and 2, JPW is scrambling for his life??:conf2:
it seemed that the WRs were running 20 yard routes for a short yardage conversion, WTH??
we quickly deviated from our usual scheme even though therewere plenty of time left in the ball game. I realize that the OL had to be realigned, but we still could run right at them instead we run around the edges which was Utah's strength!!
I saw this same situation happen in several games this season.. oh well I am still happy w/ 12-2 and our young players
This is a good example of the ignorance I constantly hear about Utah and our conference. This is why the "experts" didn't allow us in the BCS.
From someone who knows - Utah is hardly "middle-of-the-road". This team can play. Two undefeated seasons since 2004 and EIGHT straight bowl wins says otherwise.
The MWC is not the SEC yet by a long shot - but we have some top-notch programs. Utah, BYU, TCU can all compete well on the national stage, for example. Would Utah survive the week-to-week grind of an SEC schedule and still go undefeated? Probably not, but they WOULD still represent well, and would still have the capability of beating any team in the country on a given day.
I agree with someone who said Alabama had nothing to win and everything to lose with this game. And I know the loss must sting. As a Utah fan I hate when we win 10 games and still lose the BYU game - it's almost like a wasted season.
But keep your chins up Tide fans. You have come a LONG way from a couple years ago. I hope maybe we can meet up with you again soon.
This was a stunning loss. I never thought that our winning was a given but I never expected to see us handled like we were.:eek2: What Utah did to us reminded me somewhat of what we did to Miami in 92. Our Fla loss was filled with a lot of 'what ifs' but this loss was clear and unmistakable.
All in all a remarkable resurgent year for us but just a shame that we had to end with a loss like this.

Everything about BAMA was out of sync last night. Wide open receivers either weren't seen, or dropped the ball when they were, very porous OLine play w/too many sacks/pressures on JPW, the constant shifts by Utah was never adjusted to until the second half of the game causing too many off-sides penalties by BAMA, the defense looked confused constantly, pitiful tackling, db's missing plays, I could go on. It just looked like a really, really bad from BAMA.
Question: Did Utah do the shift thing (both Oline and Dline shifts) for part of the game plan against Bama or was this something BAMA should have been prepared for?
Other comments:
Javy was one of the lone bright spots and seemed to try and fire up the team every chance.
One of the offensive adjustments I wanted to see from BAMA after they began mounting the comeback in the third quarter was more short 6-10 pass plays particularly to the tight ends and running backs, instead the long deep ball trying score the big play. I think had they tried more of that it might would have allowed the running backs to be a little more successful and may have eventually wore down the Utes a little bit and resulted in sustaining long drives and getting mentally back in the game.
Poor tackling hurt the defense as much as anything although adjustments were made late. Many times the db's & linebackers were in the right place to make the play but didn't wrap up.
I'd have liked to have seen more pressure applied on the qb, which did happen more in the second half, but overall the defense looked like they were sleepwalking for most of the game.
Not much else to say. This game was not indicative of the way this team has played all year (with exception for maybe Tulane and KY games), and I think that is what disturbed me more than anything. It wasn't necessarily the loss, I can deal with Utah winning, but is more about the way in which BAMA played from start to finish, that most disappointments me.
All in all, it was a great year and I'm not sure any of us truly thought this team would be as good as they were this year. This team despite the last two losses, has given next years team something to build on. This loss stings, but I know the BAMA football program is in good hands and will continue to be even better.

Andre's absence killed us offensively, as our OL play thanks to injury and inexperience reminded me of the Shula/Croyle days. The 8 sacks were certainly reminiscient of a certain Iron Bowl.
That doesn't explain why our defense did so horribly though. It's not as though field position was an issue on every single possession. It looked as though we did not watch film with any sort of critical eye.
Despite this negativity, a 12-2 season I'd take in a heartbeat back in August and I am optimistic about the future. We are back on the national scene and in a much more dynamic way than in 2005. I am worried that Utah looked more agressive than we did, but I have a feeling Coach Saban will remind our players of that unfortunate fact every second he has with the players.
My stance on Utah is as it was before the game, developed through several visits there: a beautiful state with terrible people.

Utah has done that all year long in virtually every game. So yes, Alabama should have game-planned that.
That's what I thought. There's no way you just start doing that for the Sugar Bowl. That was something they'd been doing all year.
Thanks...thats what I had figured. I'm scratching my head on why BAMA was not more disciplined in facing that, they've played disciplined defense all year. But your guys executed it well. I even though they kinda got robbed on that penalty where they called it against Utah for an abrupt set.
My thoughts from last night - We didn't show up. I can't understand why, but I have a couple of guesses. I will not post them here, because it's not up to me to call out players by name. The utah players and coaches reminded me of Miami in the 80s-90s - totally classess and a bunch of taunting punks.
This year we were picked to finish 4th in the west, but we far exceeded that. Next year will be our time to shine. After watching the Army All-American game today - especially Nico Johnson and DJ Fluker - I know we'll be back in Atlanta come December.

If you're not playing for the national championship, then the bowl game is not that relevant in comparison to the regular season. I don't think they really mean jack about the state of the program or give a good representation of the teams playing.
As fans we want to win every game, and there's no excuse for poor play, but so many variables go into a bowl game, different teams having different motivational levels, coaches taking different approches to practices (Utah had more to prove, I'll bet their practices were soley on the game, Bama had nothing to gain and as per Saban's history, his bowl practices probably focused on future development as much as this game)
Bowl games, for that reason are more unpredictable and also, unimportant.
