I think this is the root of the problem, and I've thought so for years now.

We can talk about details, schemes, strategy, etc. But I think the root cause of all of this is entitlement.

We DO have more talent than almost any other program in the country. To be fair, certain spots are young (secondary).

Vanderbilt is the least talented program in the SEC and almost always is. I dare say they will not finish with a winning record this year, even after what they did to us, but certainly won't be better than 7-6 after a possible bowl game. They lost to Georgia State! But what they do have is a hard nosed attitude, hard working, take nothing for granted, and will fight you for 60 minutes.

Alabama does not have this. And we have not had this on a consistent basis since 2020. Oh, if the opponent is right, or if an opponent mouth's off in the week leading up to a game, oh sure we will play with our hair on fire. Otherwise, we are sloppy, lazy, and entitled. I don't know how you fix that in today's environment.
My personal opinion is that Alabama needs to struggle ton more as a program to regain the requisite fight. USC went through this (still going this, some may argue...) after reaching their peak under Pete Carroll.

If there are other options, then some sort of better ID'ing future players with the right mindset, even with the influence of NIL. NIL will be in the picture for the foreseeable future, and that is a different world than the one we all grew up watching and being a part of. I don't like it either, but it is what it is.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Alabama is in a transition of schemes and players. These changes would've occurred even if NIL wasn't in the picture. We won't really see the true CKD impact until 2-3 years from now - there is a decreasing amount of residual programming from CNS that stays around. How CKD uses that to his advantage to continue the success remains to be seen.

Don't know if most have seen this. They sent Bray Hubbard in to replace Moore after the hissy fit. Moore waved Hubbard off and refused to come off even though Wommack and Deboer were telling him to get off. This is a captain. Not good at all.
He's a captain? He's got that C patch on his shoulder? That would be stripped off and he would have to earn it back.

I really disdain insubordination. I'm not even that old, either. Then again, there is always more to the story.

I'm glad you posted this because I've meant to bring up the 3rd down and 4th down conversions.

Forgive me if others have already brought this up and I've missed it but I was hoping that UGA converting so many 4th downs the previous game was an anomaly.

UGA was 3 for 15 on 3rd Downs and 5 for 5 on 4th downs (7 for 7 if you count penalties)

Vandy was 12 for 18 on 3rd Down and 1 for 1 on 4th down (I know they had at least one more on that stupid duplicate # penalty.

So basically the last two games we have allowed 15 for 33 3rd down conversions and 6 for 6 4th down conversions (8 for 8 counting penalties though their might have been a few more vs Vandy I can't recall exactly)

That's at least 21-23 times the Defense COULD NOT get the opposing Offense off the field.

What makes it even worse is that most of those situations were 3rd and long or 4th and Medium.

It's a problem... BIG problem.

I read someone on here said that they heard Vandy was running a wasted dummy play on 1st down just to see what we were doing to set up getting a 3rd down conversion.

I don't know if that's true but if it is that is just embarrassing.

Vandy.... VANDERBILT had us so scouted that they could afford to just waste a down and make adjustments off it to pick up conversions.

That is pathetic and very concerning.
Apparently, CKW has certain tendencies that he stubbornly refuses to deviate from. This will be fully exploited by the better teams on our schedule...

Yes, two-time captain. Last year and this year. He's a 5th year guy and supposed to be a leader. If that's one of your senior leaders, what does that say about the culture? I will say I saw he issued an apology this morning that sounded pretty contrite, so hopefully he will make amends in the right way with everyone involved and with the team.

Venting about a horrible loss is understandable, but jumping to conclusions about how Deboer is running the program seems premature. We now get to learn how he and his staff correct and learn from adversity.
I have wondered where Oatis is because I never hear his name called. I have no idea if he is injuried, in the dog house, or what the situation is because he looked like he could develop into an outstanding Dlineman his freshman year. From my perspective our Dline is not very good. I think there is some talent there but no one is elite or at least no one plays at an elite level. I don't know if we have a bunch of recruiting misevaluations or if it's a development issue or a combination of the two. The key to having an elite defense is having an elite Dline.
Unfortunately we got our answer today - the portal. I wonder what happened there - he was on the Outland watch list and played early on. I would've thought he could've helped stuff the option RB dives last Saturday. Obviously something behind the scenes......

It's simple. I've highlighted the 3 main reasons why we lost the game. The 3rd down efficiency of Vanderbilt kind of relates to time of possession. I was kind of surprised at Vandy's yard per rush number. I only saw highlights of the game and looking at the complaints on the board made it seem like they were running through us like a hot knife through butter. I guess they got the yards right when they needed them though.

There were some real life run plays that counted as pass plays- they had 3 or 4 inside shuffle passes that combined for probably 100yds at least. And they picked up enough yards to get the 1st every single time.

So on the down that mattered (the one that did/didn’t move the chains), which was 3rd down against Vandy and 4th down against Georgia (because they had to use four downs to come from behind), Alabama’s defense over the past 6 quarters lost the down 20 out of 26 times. That is stunningly bad defense.

Some are saying we should expect other teams to implement aspects of Vandy's veer/option offense.

The next game I coach will be my first, but I don't think that'll be as easy as some suggest. Teams like Vandy and Service Academy teams run this is because it's unusual, puts better athletes of opposing teams in situations of uncertainty, and, bottom line, just makes preparing for that one game very, very difficult.

So, just throwing in little option play here or there is possible, but the way these offenses work is they wear on you play after play after play until it pops. Most conventional offenses would probably make more mistakes trying to do this than it would be worth trying. JMO.

I think a good analogy is like facing a knuckleballer in baseball. When you're used to seeing 97 mph fastballs and 88 mph sliders, it's hard to adjust to a 70 mph ball that floats and moves all over the place before it crosses the plate. If you see a team struggle with that knuckleballer, you can't ask one of your pitchers to throw a knuckleball when you face that team. Sure, he could probably throw one or two, but pitching a whole game throwing it many times is a huge ask.

Please tell me about these adjustments that you saw.
Nothing complex, taking away the edge runs is what opened up the middle run and shovel. Jess, Cole, Brooks Austin have all pointed it out

And from Clint Lamb:
"After the opening drive, Vandy RBs averaged just 2.8 yards per carry. Pavia totaled 56 yards on 20 carries w/0 sacks, so true carries. That’s also good for just 2.8 yards. Vandy’s average third down on the first two drives was 4.4 yards to go. After that, it jumped to 7.5 yards."

The barners are suddenly gleeful that they have a legit shot at us now. I guess they think that Thorne will become Pavia between now and then. I have never heard so much smack talk from fans of a 2-4 team. They said that same thing back in 2011 when we played Georgia Southern right before we played them. The infamous "tin horn" game.
