OL - Zone Blocking Question....

There is an old and accurate saying. "Whoever wins the line of scrimmage usually wins the game."

Even if you are locked up on your man and you are 3 yards deep in your own backfield you are losing. Not only does your RB have to juke and jive just to get to the LOS there are huge gaps being opened up for the LB's to fill or stunt through.

My understanding of Zone blocking is that it relates to WHO you are blocking and has little or nothing to do with what technique you are using to block them.

I think there are many ways to skin a cat and many techniques can be used for blocking. When you overmatch your apponent physically, I would normally want to drive block them to hades and let the running game eat up the clock, but last year when faced with an inferior apponent, we didn't see that at all. In my opinion we let too many lesser apponents stay in the game just because we wouldn't take them to the woodshed physically. Two things I would like to see this year, Auburn going down, and the Alabama offense being about 200% more physical than last years version. Brody's gone, its time to take the gloves off and bare knuckle these guys.

I like your attitude, bamaslammer. Go out there and hit 'em in the mouth!

I remember what fRan said about playing Smiley, Britt, and Ephraim as freshmen -- "About half the time they're blocking the wrong guy. But they're knocking them down on the ground. We just need to show them which guy to go after."

I love seeing an OL come charging off the ball and drive the other guys back. I hate seeing an OL stand up, grab the opponent, and dance around with little or no forward movement. I don't know if last year's "OL dance" was due primarily to technique or (lack of) talent...most likely a combination of the two. But I sure hope to see a change this year.

Is this saying that the posters on this board know more than CMS about what offensive line techniques will work?

Are you actually saying this?!?

:eek2:

No.

But what I do believe is that just because someone has the title of "D-1 College Football Coach" doesn't mean they don't make wrong decisions, mistakes or misjudgements. CMS and CBC have forgotten more football than I know. I wouldn't dare say (with a straight face) I knew more than they know. But it isn't out of the realm of possibility nor uncommon for coaches to make wrong decisions on things they do within their system. Happens all the time. If it didn't then you would never see scheme changes, personnel changes and so forth. These people are human just like everyone else. They make wrong decisions, great decisions, so-so decisions etc.

But up to this point many feel that something just isn't right about the performance of the OL. We all have differing opinions on what the "something" is. But to think that error in judgement or wrong decisions in what goes on the football field is beneath CMS/CBC or ANY COACH is nuts.
