Promises to program by Athlectic Dept.?

I agree. Granted this response may be a little biased because I was the only girl in my class that didn't do gymnastics growing up, instead, I was out playing ball with the boys. Gymnastics is hyped up so much that it makes me sick. There is so much money wasted on them to look pretty from a distance its not even funny. The money they're wasting to do some ridiculous display of lights or some other ridiculous thing like that should be being used to benefit other sports programs that get overshadowed by football, basketball, and gymnastics. If any program at UA deserves improvements its the softball team. They broke their attendance record twice in one week this season and most weekends if you're not at the game at least an hour early you're not sitting down. They also need a clubhouse. Right now they have to leave the softball complex and go over to Coleman to do everything they need to do. With a program that's had as much success as Alabama Softball in recent years I think they've more than earned it. 5 trips to the WCWS , 9 straight NCAA Tournament appearances in the programs 10 year existence, 5 regional titles. I think they've been overlooked quite a bit and something needs to be done about that. That being said I honestly don't like softball but I think being consistently successful the way they are deserves some kind of reward. I'm not knocking the fact that the Joe does need some improvements but I think softball gets over shadowed a lot.

Easy DC. Nothing has changed from watching games in the Right Field Lounge. In fact, we were able to move back on the grass with our cookers after a five year absent. The only rule that was put into place was that the event staff did not want us to put our folding chairs on the tables to improve our site of the field. They felt that the students would try and duplicate what we were doing. The tables are 30" in height and liability comes into play.

The truth is baseball here is very low on the totem pole. And that's sad to see. Hopefully we can get the improvements that Coach Wells wants and deserves because Sewell-Thomas is becoming an eye-sore as compared to the other SEC venues. After the facelift of Coleman and the Athletic building, Sewell-Thomas does not fit in terms of architecture.

I guess that after factoring in the costs of much higher priorities (upgrading the XBoxes in the football player's lounge to XBox 360s, installing porcelain bidets in the luxury boxes at Bryant-Denny, etc.) there just isn't enough left for the baseball program.

What's sad is that Vanderbilt doesn't even have an official athletic department anymore, yet they have managed to surpass us in virtually every sport except football (which lately isn't saying much). That the former laughingstock Commodores have a stronger athletic program than we do is fairly convincing evidence that a leadership change needs to be made in Tuscaloosa.

First of all, we need a new coach or someone needs to sit down with CJW and explain to him that the bat size and density has changed and he can't coach homerun ball anymore. He needs to start coaching fundamental baseball. When he does that and starts winning again we will bring in more people. Look at attendance figures for the past 6 years or so. They have steadilly gone down.

Secondly, CJW needs to do a little better job of recruiting or needs to do a better job of coaching the tallent he has. He is constantly changing the lineup both offensively and defensively like he doesn't know what he wants to do.

I think the baseball field does deserve some upgrades. I will grant you that. But sky boxes? You have to be kidding me? We can't actually sell out the seats we have now and we're gonna spend that kind of money on sky boxes/box seats? Spend themoney where it would be a little more useful. Spend it on things that would bennifit the players and help the ball team.

I think a good start, though, would be to get a coach who knows a little more about teaching fundamental baseball.

;)

Pachyderm37, please stay on topic. We're talking about upgrades to Sewell-Thomas Stadium and not Coach Wells. I think it is very clear that in order to recruit well the stadium has to be up to par with the rest of the conference. IMO, here is how I rank the SEC venues with purposed expansions by some schools.

1. Arkansas (Baum Stadium)- The best in the country. Recently added skyboxes down both lines.
2. South Carolina or LSU- Both are getting brand new stadiums in 2008 & 2009.
3. South Carolina or LSU- Both are getting brand new stadiums in 2008 & 2009.
4. Mississippi State (Dudy Noble Field)- Still a gem.
5. Mississippi (Swayze Field)- Soon to start a $16-million dollar expansion.
6. Auburn (Plainsman Park)-Beautiful stadium that has a renaissance of Camden Yards.
7. Florida (McKethan Stadium)- Just finished a $13-million dollar expansion in September 2006.
8. Tennessee (Lindsey Nelson Stadium)- 2 phase expansion totaling $6-million dollars.
9. Georgia (Foley Field)- Beautiful setting. One could argue if Sewell-Thomas Stadium is better.
10. Alabama (Sewell-Thomas Stadium)- See where we are!
11. Vanderbilt (Hawkins Field)- Recently renovated in the past few years. Looks 200% better than the previous stadium.
12. Kentucky (Cliff Hagan Stadium)- Better than it used to be.

Before you say that the bottom 3 schools are coming off of a SEC championship recently, it's very important that we try to improve our position in stadium expansion. This is a big selling tool while recruiting top players.

Not to step on toes, Diamond Tide, but to recruit well you also must have a coach who can both recruit and win.

That having been said, Yes, I think keeping our facillities upgraded is important. I just don't think box seats or skyboxes is the way to go. Yes, I'd like to see more seating, but do empty seats help in recruiting? Again, let's focus on facility upgrades for the players first. Let's focus on real indoor batting cages or indoor pitching or dressing rooms at the field instead of the players having to go to Coleman Collesium to get dressed. How about a weight training facility adjacent to the field? People on here seems to be more concerned with more seating and concessions more than improvements for the actual team. And once more, winning seems to help draw in good players, too.

Pac, the proposed plans for the upgrade does include a new large dressing room, new batting facility, enhanced pitching & catching facility. It also includes a Hall of Fame room. I'm looking at line drawings that is dated 1.16.2007. This is what Jim wanted. It looks great on paper.

When you look at these drawings, we're not really adding extra seats. We would eliminate the bleachers on the third base side and replace it with the new club section and batting facility, which will also house the dressing room and Hall of Fame room. The batting facility will be located under the club section. I don't have an estimate on the number of seats the new club section will have but it can't be that much more than the existing bleachers.

On the first base side, there will be an elimination of seats down the line. This will increase the visibility of the field.

There is a lot more on these drawings about the overall plans. Hopefully Davis Architects will post more renderings on their website. But as you can see, they have the players in mind. Believe me !!

Get the hell off this board. Don't give me this "cSP deserves anything she wants"

It's her damn fault that people can't stand out in right field and watch the game. She shouldn't get any kind of raise because her teams underachieved. She has to compete with realistically, 10 programs nationally and Georgia routinely whips her ....

Get this .... off a real man's board. I hope the gymnastics team folds one day. She overblows her budget every year and not a damn thing is done about it. Meanwhile, sports that are actually shown live on TV don't get crap.

Good thing you didn't personally attack another poster or a Bama coach. I hear there are forum rules about that sort of thing. Right, DT? And for goodness sake, don't have actual accurate information about the program. That could get your post dleted as well. Back to the subject at hand.

edited because I don't feel like arguing with people who support sports that aren't really sports
