QB Competition 2018

It appears to me to be frustration. I've noticed it on and off throughout the year. I can't remember which game it was (maybe the aTm game) but I remember Bo carrying the ball two times in row for dang good yardage on both carries then being pulled. There was a sideline shot of what appeared (and I stress APPEARED) to be him getting highly upset. The camera shot didn't stay on him to see the entire context of it, it was just a two second shot then back to play the camera went. However, there's no doubt Damien Harris has been very frustrated because there's been a lot of sideline shots of him being taken out after ripping off some good runs and his body language left no doubt what he was upset about.

which is perplexing to me considering CNS defensive mind and running plays eating the clock/gaining 5+ a carry.

Harris looked upset on sideline at times this year.

I agree. You go with who's hot on that series. This year I was expecting every other series for RBs. Allow them to get into groove and make big plays. I think that's part of reason why Bo Struggled.. he never could get into rhythm with the offense. ... Daboll has lot to learn from this season and get better in off season.

Think about it for a moment. In a usual "Bama offense", there's twice the carries to be spread around the RB's. As far as carries go, Jalen has 137 carries on the year (some are tackles for losses), Damien has 110, and Bo has 108. With less carries to go around, more substitutions have to be made in order to ensure no one gets left out.

However, here's a caveat. Look at the breakdown of carries per game in our toughest four:
FSU: Jalen - 15, Damien - 9, Bo - 15
LSU: Jalen - 14, Damien - 9, Bo - 11
MSU: Jalen - 19, Damien - 8, Bo - 5
AU: Jalen - 18, Damien - 6, Bo - 6

All it would have taken to change this would have been for CNS to walk over to Daboll during the game and instruct him to start keeping one back in for entire series, then rotate. I don't think it takes until the offseason to make a change like that.

At this point, if we play in a bowl game, I expect Tua to play a lot to better evaluate him. It depends on who we play against: UCF or Miami.

If we make it to playoff, then We have to find a role for Tua somehow. use him in Goalline package... maybe develop a game plan that evolves around both player's strength and won't hurt the offense.

As far as offseason program... Both will get better... we'll see Tua v.s. Hurts battle which won't tell us anything, and then summer workouts and the fall camp. We won't know what's the real deal is until next August.

We can drag this on and on about the 2018 competition and the strength and weakness of each QBs... but nothing will get solved by that. We don't know how much those guys will progress in the off season... Anything can happen at this point. Season is not over, and I'm sure I'm getting chided for saying this, but our season isn't over.

I agree. I completely agree. I wondered if Burns had said something about that to Daboll/Saban.

This is true whether you make the playoff or not. There is a lot of work to be done this year, and it is going to help lay the ground work for next year.

As for me, I still believe that Alabama has the best team in America, and I hope that you get a chance to prove that in the CFP.

If we slip into the playoffs I highly doubt Saban uses Tua. I would really be surprised. But I do agree if we don't make the playoffs and are in the Orange Bowl etc. I fully expect to see Tua at points during the game. Regarding the decision making process used to evaluate both quarterbacks going into next season. Like CNS routinely says, "Whoever wins the team". If people sitting in recliners hundreds and thousands of miles away from the field can notice the negative body language from players at the WR and RB position. I have no doubt it's being noticed and picked up on by CNS and the assistants. That will be a big part of the decision making process. I'm getting very concerned about the impact this is possibly already having on recruiting (see Earle's comments a few pages back).

I believe we have the potential to be the best team in America. However, with the current players and current philosophy, I think we're arguably the 4th or 5th best.

Make the playoff and win championship and all of this goes away until Jalen have a bad game again.

Ya, I was thinking we were the best until the last third of the season. We are potentially the best but have issues. I realize other team have issues also but for some reason I don't follow them. :)

Wow, just Wow! Houston we have a problem...

Or, is it possible he's taken too much on himself with the options his position affords so that it is starting to hurt the performance of the offense and the feelings/attitudes of his teammates?
Quite possibly true, but ultimately it is the job of the coaches to ensure that a player can effectively carryout the responsibilities that have been delegated to him.

If he plays badly, especially in the passing game, it won't matter if Bama wins or loses, he will be criticized. Conversely, if he passes well and plays well overall, most fans will be satisfied even if Bama loses. But in almost any likely scenario, the fans will want a QB competition this off season. This is more than just a reaction to one bad game. This has been building for a while. There has hardly been a bigger Jalen fan and supporter than myself on this board and I've finally agreed that while his passing has noticeably improved over last year, he still has a long way to go, especially his pocket presence and patience, his reluctance to release the ball, etc. It's not all on him, there are other factors, but he is the trigger man and looks like the biggest problem. I stated more than once earlier this year that Jalen was the primary reason that Bama had any reasonable chance to win any kind of championship. I would not say that now. There are others like that.

Very telling...sadly.

I'd be afraid to see the receiving touches too. Those guys looked helplessly frustrated in the 4th qt against Auburn. One time, I'm pretty sure I saw Ridley just jog off the LOS. I can only guess he might not have been the first read and, therefore, didn't expect to get the ball.

It's a damn shame how the coaches / gameplan did not feature Damien this year. He's been by far our best RB and best overall player on offense. He's most likely off to the NFL now and we never really used him to his full ability. As others have alluded to we've got to figure out how to get the RBs more carries..

You forgot few things... Not all Jalen's run are designed. They hardly call that. Secondly, OL didn't always give him better protections or WR didn't create separations in time. Numbers look bad on paper, but really we gotta consider several factors behind his runs.... Just a thought.

Agreed - Jalen did not carry that many times by design. Jalen carried that many times because he won't stand in the pocket when pressured.

Have I said that enough times this week?

We have said that a lot, but some people insist on arguing their point until they are blue in their face. Look at the other threads on playoff. All we can do is present rationale thoughts and let them sort it out.
