QB Gunner Kiel Updates

Do you think he would come here with the possibility of not seeing playing time until
at least year 2? It seems like a lot of these top quarterbacks want to go where they can
play day 1. Thoughts?

The overwhelming odds are that Kiel and his parents can take their choice....Go to a program where, depending on whether he enrolls in time for spring practice, he can realistically expect to be the best QB option 120 or 240 days out of high school. Or go to a program where he has a chance to win a championship when he becomes the best QB on the team.

Any big-time program in a major conference who is starting on a true freshman is going to have equally big-time problems. They're just not ready, no matter what their HS pedigree. True, there are about enough exceptions to keep talk-show callers braying, "Well, what about......" They can have their true freshmen. Give me the talented third year sophomore, and even though he may have only mop-up experience, we'll whip the 18 year old true freshman's tail 95%+ of the time.

If Keil wants to be the best pro prospect possible, he'll go to a big-time program that is stable enough to let him mature for 12 - 24 months before throwing him to the tender mercies of a major-conference defense. Hopefully, that stable big time program will be Alabama. If not, best wishes.

Talked to Columbus East quarterback Gunner Kiel this morning. Would like to have a decision made this month. Indiana very much in the mix.

Had good things to say about OU. He did mention it's a long drive. Said he drove it himself to see how far it was for visit.

Gunner Kiel also said he'll make another trip to Missouri "really soon."

Columbus East QB Gunner Kiel on his college decision: "It'll probably be sometime this month. I don't know a date."

"When I make that decision, I'll let my teammates, family and friends know. By then, I'm sure it'll get out."

He wants to absorb as much as he can about all the schools. Also wants to make the drive to see how far it feels from home.

Hmmm, not one word about Alabama. :conf3:

Interesting to hear that he is thinking about distance.

Columbus, Indiana to:

Norman, OK - 13 hours and 3 minutes
Tuscaloosa, AL - 7 hours and 45 minutes
Columbia, MO - 6 hours and 48 minutes
Bloomington, IN - 54 minutes

you are right, but if I were his parents I would rather drive 8 hours to see him win than drive 1 hour to watch him run for his life.

I have a good feeling about this guy. Hopefully we get him, and then DGB gets some Crimson Fever and turns our offense into a feared unti as much as our defense is!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't think anyone really knows what Kiel is going to do, and that includes Kiel himself.

It's his decision and I wish him well regardless of where he eventually signs but Indiana?!?!?! Really? With rare exceptions, they've been either mediocre or down right horrible for the past 30 years. I didn't realize there wasn't that much difference between driving to Tuscaloosa and Misery, er, I mean Missouri.

I agree. This QB recruitment is starting to remind me of the Tim Tebow recruitment. Tebow made his decision the day of his announcement. The difference now is that Bama has CNS, not CMS and that Kiel's parents seem to geniunely like Bama. Hopefully this situation will turn out different than the Tebow situation. ;)

Well, as a life long Sooner fan I have come to the uneducated conclusion that Kiel is going to commit to Bama, and I honestly can find no reason why he shouldn't. OU is very fortunate to be loaded at the QB position, and all three current QB's fit the OU system very well. Also, these latest interviews with Kiel and his family make it obvious that he wants to be within reasonable driving distance from his home. Bama has about 5 hours on OU in that area. I don't buy any of the stuff about IU or Mizzou. He's going to want a great offensive line in front of him and a chance to win a NC. I hope I'm wrong, and it will be an interesting next few weeks.

I can see how Indiana could land him..Close to home..He has Family on the team & knows lots of the Players..And he would be the "Man" as soon as he walks on campus..Plus Coach Wilson seems to be a solid recruiter..I would love to see Gunner come to Bama..But won't be surprised at all if he goes to Indiana..

I understand having family on the team is a plus but if you compete in the same position against your older brother I don't see that being an advantage. Doubt it's happening

He would be running for his life unless Wilson can get an offensive line to block.
