Re: QB Jameis 'Jaboo' Winston (FSU Soft-verbal) Updates

For the record, I'm very much still observing the Land of Make Believe crowd from the ridge about three miles away with high powered binoculars. Nothing I said in that previous post should be construed in any way as joining in that.

Just to make myself perfectly clear, Winston has done absolutely nothing publicly to make anyone rationally believe he is coming to 'Bama, and just because a guy like Taylor pulled the late flip, that in no way means that should be expected with Winston too (and he's also done nothing to legitimately indicate he'll pass up big-time baseball money regardless of where he signs). I've long been an advocate of his ability and have hoped we could find to way to get him on the field in Tuscaloosa, but there is just almost nothing out there to be optimistic of that ever happening. I certainly hope I'm wrong in the end, but for the time being that's the truth of the matter.
Fair enough. Except the truths of recruiting are relative and quick to change. Good for boards like this that they are.

I'm greedy. We just got Yeldon, now I want Winston. Who was that guy that said we were getting both? He's halfway there...

I've heard that some of the Alabama players got together at the Alabama-Mississippi game and decided that they wanted to win another national title at Alabama TIFWIW.

We have no shot at Winston

(to honor my terrible "Yeldon is not coming" post in hopes it works)

From my perspective, I always figured Winston would take the money and play baseball. I mean, why not? We see cases all the time where players come back to college football if pro baseball doesn't work out for them. At least, that is what would be in my head if I were in a similar position.

If I were Winston, that's what I would do. There have been several successful players who played their baseball careers out, then came back to play football (Weinke and Brandon Weeden just being a quick couple). Also, it is easier to come back to Football then to go from football into baseball (ask Drew Henson). Several players have given up Football for baseball, and made the right decision such as Adam Dunn, Todd Helton, Mark Derosa, Carl Crawford, Matt Holiday, and the best football recruit to go baseball ever Joe Mauer (Mauer was thew 2000 Football POTY, and ranked ahead of other QB's like Brodie Croyle, Matt Leinart, Kyle Orton, Kellen Clemens, Derek Anderson who are all in the NFL now). So I would think the MLB would be the "right" decision for him, for now...

Given the risk of long term injury is lower in baseball, I'd choose that sport.

Re: QB Jameis Winston Updates

Winston will get the leverage of "some" MLB team wanting to chomp him early, due to his incredible football ability. Watch the You-Tube of him in the 2011 Miss-Alabama All Star game. His ability is unanimously unbelievable, smooth, quick, and accurate....all the throws and runs. ONE MLB team will for sure offer him big money....it's worth the risk. The football will actually move him higher up on the bonus scale......I saw it happen to a D2 athlete, football and baseball.

I'm almost certain he'll get offered over a a million, but he goes for as low as $750,000.

I still think there is a good chance that Saban can win over Winston to sign with Bama in 2012. The odds are pretty good it could happen. But this athleticism will be too much to pass on, and some pro team will give him big money with a baseball only exclusivity clause. If it doesn't work in baseball in 2-3 years, he'll come back to play college football. You watch, this is almost certainly how it will play out.

Re: QB Jameis Winston Updates

It will take more than $750k to get him to give up football for baseball. Winston was hoping for slightly below Starling type money ($7.5 million) to sign. The new MLB CBA will cap what he can now get to somewhere in the neighborhood of $500k, but there are situations where he might get $1.5 million....what I hear from his inner cirlce. At FSU, he could probably still get the same money and be allowed to play college football as well. He would be a 2 month pro baseball player (May and June)until he figures out which one he is best at (would take 2-3 years). At Bama---$0 money and play college football and college baseball. At FSU---$500,000-$1.5 million and play college football and 2 months of professional baseball. The difference in money for part-time or full time professional baseball is not that big....with the new CBA. Somebody will sign him to lock him into a contract. It won't cost the team millions either. My heart says Bama...my mind and the Winston's bank account says FSU. He ain't giving up football....especially for anything under $5 million....which ain't/can't happen.

Re: QB Jameis Winston Updates

There seem to be too many insiders that think we flip him for him not to flip IMO. They have to feel a particular way for a reason. It's not like just all the recruiting guys from TideSports are saying. Different outlets are all saying it.

Jameis has been tweeting a LOT today. If you aren't afraid of being dubbed a "stalker" go follow him. He hasn't dropped any real clues, yet...but if I start seeing conversations with Geno Smith and/or Ryan Anderson, it could mean it is about to get interesting. :)

I don't know where he's going and I know he's a top QB, but I have to say on film when he is running the ball he looks identical to Julio Jones. I think he could be a dominant 1st round draft pick wide receiver (assuming he can catch).
